*The Visible Measures Top 10 Webisodes Chart focuses on digital studio-driven Web series that appear on Internet video-sharing destinations and publisher microsites. Each Web series is measured on a True Reach™ basis, which includes viewership of both studio-syndicated video clips and viewer-driven social video placements. The data are compiled using the Visible Measures platform, a constantly growing repository of analytic data on more than 200 million Internet videos across more than 200 video destinations.

If you are a webisode publisher and would like clips from your microsites to be counted towards the chart, please contact Visible Measures.

Note: This chart does not include vloggers, interviews, how-to series, news shows, or product review shows. View-count results are incremental by month.

A New Record: 168 Million Views

the station image

This month, the top 10 web series collectively accumulated the highest number of views ever recorded: 168 million.

Visible Measures believes this boost can be explained by the increased frequency of content from series like The Station, and the explosive popularity of series that cater to general audiences, like The Annoying Orange.

The Annoying Orange: Could It Be Any Bigger?

Not only does The Annoying Orange hold the number one spot, but it accounts for 38% of the chart’s total views at more than 64 million views.

The show might not be the most sophisticated one in the top 10, but it’s still topical. A Pac-Man-themed episode hit YouTube not long after Google revived the Pac-Man craze on the game’s 30th anniversary with its playable logo.

Fred’s Gradual Decline

Fred used to be the champion of the chart, but he’s been slipping gradually over the past few months. Why? Because he’s not putting out any new content!

At first we chalked that up to the fact that the actor has been working on a Fred movie for Nickelodeon, but production has wrapped and the web series is as short on new content as ever.

However, landing at #5 with no new content on tap is nothing to shake a stick at. Charlie the Unicorn and Potter Puppet Pals also placed on the chart without new episodes.

iPad Sales Top 3 Million

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 08:45 AM PDT

Apple has announced that it's sold 3 million iPads – less than three months since the device hit stores. In a statement, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, "People are loving iPad as it becomes a part of their daily lives. We’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more people around the world, including those in nine more countries next month.”

It would appear that iPad sales aren't slowing down at all since launch – in fact, they might be accelerating. The company announced it had hit two million devices sold just 22 days ago, whereas it took the company 28 days to sell its first million devices, and another month to sell its second. With the device going on sale in more countries in July, those numbers could jump even faster.

Apple also seems content to keep the spotlight squarely on them this week. It's probably no coincidence that yesterday we saw price cuts on both Kindle and Nook, and today we're reminded that iPad is continuing to sell exceptionally well. Further, with everyone expecting a new Droid phone to be announced tomorrow, this morning saw reports that some iPhone 4 customers will be getting their devices a day early.

10 Best UFO Hoax Videos on YouTube

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 07:33 AM PDT

While Unidentified Flying Objects have been reported since man first looked up at the sky, the modern phenomenon of the “flying saucer” has only been in the public’s consciousness since 1947, the year of both the Kenneth Arnold sightings and the Roswell incident.

Interest ever since has always been fairly strong, enhanced at times by world events or popular media. But it wasn’t until the advent of the Internet, and more specifically YouTube, that thousands of clips of UFO footage have been available to view on demand.

For entertainment purposes (rather than any deeper conspiracy theories), we’ve trawled YouTube for UFO clips, and have pulled together a list of ten of the very best hoaxes, “unexplained” footage, fakes, and “mysterious” home movies. So, put on your tin foil hat and press play now. As always, be sure to let us know your favorites in the comments below.

1. New York UFO Sighting

This promo for a sci-fi TV channel employs a classic premise for fake film clips. It's the old tourist recording a video set-up trick and keeps minimal focus on the UFO, to great effect.

2. UFO Haiti

Since revealed to be a "social experiment," which we guess is a fancy name for a hoax, the original video (not embeddable) racked up over 10 million views before the creator admitted to the LA Times it was made with special effects -- something suspected by many owing to the uniformity of the trees. And the fact it appears to depict a freakin' flying saucer.

3. Green Sphere UFO – Original Hoax – CGI

TheFakingHoaxer is a master of the art of CGI UFO clips. What we like about this "green sphere" effort is how the UFO's form factor is not the norm, making it a more believable clip.

4. UFO Caught on Live TV News! Turkey!

This is really nicely done, apart from one small detail. Shouldn't the people be running away from the saucers rather than towards them? Have they not seen Independence Day?

5. 2 UFOs visit the Space Shuttle – by TFH – CGI

More outstanding CGI from TheFakingHoaxer, this time backed up with convincing dialogue too.

6. Mexico City UFO footage – 1997

Mexico, and Mexico City in particular, seem to be some kind of sky highway for UFOs. Perhaps they're all visiting Jaime Maussan. Whatever the reason, this flying saucer clip from way back in 1997 got a lot of folks very excited.

7. UFO OVER PARIS

These aliens are different. In addition to moving away from the traditional disc-shaped craft (let's face it, that was getting really old) they decided to drop in on Paris rather than the usual hotspots of Mexico City and -- God forbid -- Phoenix.

8. OVNI en Mexico

Another Mexican entrant to the top ten, this OVNI (Objeto Volador No Identificado) has been created with CGI by a clever computer whiz to show off his skills. At least, that's what he claims...

9. Huge UFO Over Shanghai China

We really enjoyed this clever spoof that mixes real footage of crowds in Shanghai reacting to the Human Spider scaling a building, with CGI footage of a huge alien craft. It's all pieced together with a news report format and voiceover. Nicely done.

10. UFO Triangle/Pyramid Over the Kremlin, Moscow

This footage of a sinister-looking black pyramid hovering over the Kremlin was backed up by similar, if shorter, footage captured during the day. It was convincing enough for major news outlets across the world to pick it up and run with it in December 2009.

Steve Jobs: iPhone 3G Couldn’t Handle iOS 4 Backgrounds

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 06:51 AM PDT

I had to explain to my disappointed dad today why he could not change the home screen background on his iPhone 3G — even though owners of iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS now have this option with iOS 4 — and I wasn’t really sure why. Luckily, I found the answer from Apple’s head honcho, Steve Jobs himself.

Gizmodo reader Erica wrote Jobs an e-mail asking why older version of the iPhone didn’t have this option. “See, I get why you don’t include multitasking,” she wrote, “but the background thing, I don’t see how that would be memory intensive and/or battery draining. It doesn’t seem like that feature needs to be exclusive to the 3GS and 4G.”

Steve’s answer was simple: “The icon animation with backgrounds didn’t perform well enough.”

From my experience on an iPhone 3GS, sliding through screens can sometimes feel a bit twitchy, and (at least subjectively) slower than before. It’s quite possible that the icon animations combined with the new backgrounds were simply too much for the poor old iPhone 3G. It seems that Apple really does update the hardware on these devices!

LinkedIn Revamps Groups with Likes, Follows and Discussions

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 06:34 AM PDT

Over the next few weeks, LinkedIn will be rolling out a complete overhaul to its Groups feature to make creating and following conversations easier and more engaging.

When you visit a revamped LinkedIn Group (check out Fans of Mashable), you will immediately notice that strong emphasis has been placed on starting conversations. In the past, you’d have to click either “Start a Discussion” or “Submit News” to add a conversation to a group. Now both of those functions have been combined via a publisher box that is prominently displayed at the top of the page.

LinkedIn’s follow system has also been expanded. You may not know this, but the business social network actually gives you the option to “follow” individuals if you want to see what they’re saying in different groups, but aren’t his or her connection. That feature is now prominent, not only for people but for conversations as well. If you stumble across a great debate in a group and want to keep tabs on it, all you have to do is click “follow discussion” and it’ll appear in your news feed and in your inbox.

There is also a new focus on surfacing quality conversations from influencers. A new feature allows you to scan different conversations and “Like,” “Pass” or “Comment” on a discussion within a group. This information then brings the best conversations to the top of the group. There is also now a “Top Influencers” feature, which highlights quality contributors based on how well they stimulate conversations from other members.

LinkedIn told me that they are trying to make the conversations you have on LinkedIn “a bit closer to the face-to-face interaction” you find at conferences or in-person meetings. To do that, they’ve focused their energy on not only increasing engagement (which should keep people coming back to LinkedIn), but on increasing quality engagement.

While groups have long been part of LinkedIn’s core structure, we’re willing to bet most users almost never post news or conversations in them — they’d rather place their thoughts on Facebook or Twitter, where they will get more engagement. We’re looking forward to seeing if this redesign changes things. Check out the video below that explains the new features, and let us know what you think of Groups 2.0 in the comments.

Salesforce Chatter Now Available to the Public

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 05:43 AM PDT

Today, Salesforce.com’s Chatter collaboration application is now available to all Salesforce.com customers. First announced back in November, Salesforce Chatter was rolled out to beta customers in February. As of today, all 77,000 Salesforce.com customers now have access to Chatter.

Chatter was basically designed to be a “Facebook for Enterprise.” It takes the fundamental communication and collaboration features of a consumer product like Facebook but implements it on an enterprise level. The end result is social platform for business communications that hooks into the existing Salesforce.com platform seamlessly.

The advantage of having the collaboration system built into Salesforce’s platform is twofold. First, it means that Chatter is immediately accessible from all of the core Salesforce products and the 160,000+ applications built on the Force.com platform. Second, because it has been integrated into Force.com, ISVs and internal teams can build new apps or extensions that take advantage of Chatter for their own use or to use and sell to other customers.

Every time we cover social media tools for the enterprise, we always stress the importance of having tools that hook into existing systems. It’s difficult enough to get end users on the consumer side to adopt a product or a service, but in the enterprise, not only are there more security or protocol-based considerations (especially for team communication applications), but actually getting everyone on board and using the same system is easier said than done. The fact that this new platform is built into the existing Salesforce tools is really smart.

New Features and Refinements

Since we last looked at Chatter, a few new features have been added. After listening to the feedback and suggestions from beta customers, Salesforce implemented a Groups tool for users. This allows users to create public or private groups for sharing information and to communicate about projects. Of all the Chatter features, I think Groups will likely be one of the “killer” features, if you will. Consumer-based programs have a difficult time getting groups correct. Having the ability to create public and private groups so that you can share documents and status updates, as well as escalate customer service or internal project concerns, is something that makes a ton of sense.

Salesforce has also created Chatter as a platform, based on its Force.com system. As we said, this means that not only are all 160,000 Force.com apps Chatter enabled, it also means that apps and extensions can be built with very specific Chatter-explicit functions.

For instance, CA, one of the largest software companies in the world, is exhibiting a project management tool for software developers that integrates Chatter at a very deep level. Things like changes to files or branches, updates on what other users are doing and when they start, bug reports and milestones are all integrated into a social update stream that can be viewed right inside the app.

Pricing and Availability

Salesforce Chatter is available to all current Salesforce.com customers now. The pricing model is pretty competitive: Existing Salesforce Sales Cloud or Force.com customers get access and usage of Chatter for free. However, Salesforce is also offering Chatter-only licenses for $15 per user per month. This is really great for businesses that might not need to have every employee with a Salesforce CRM seat, but still want all employees connected to Chatter.

Chatter is an ambitious offering and we think that the fact that it not only integrates with the existing Salesforce ecosystem, but is also extensible in its own right, will make it a success. What do you think of enterprise-grade social tools like Salesforce Chatter?

iPhone 4 Arriving One Day Early for Some Lucky Customers

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 03:43 AM PDT

If you pre-ordered an iPhone 4 from Apple early enough, you may have received an e-mail from Apple saying that your device will be delivered on June 23 — one day earlier than what was originally promised.

Engadget is in possession of one such e-mail, and several other lucky users have received one as well. The text of the email is as follows:

“Dear Apple Store Customer,

You recently received a Shipment Notification email from Apple advising you that your iPhone has shipped.

This email is to confirm that your delivery will occur on June 23rd. Although Apple and FedEx tracking information may currently indicate a later date, you can check the FedEx website the morning of the June 23rd to track your package to your doorstep.

In the event that you will not be available to accept delivery on June 23rd, it may be more convenient to use our pre-sign delivery option by visiting our Order Status website at http://www.apple.com/orderstatus

Sincerely,

The Apple Store Team”

So, there you have it: your brand new steel-cased, glass-covered bundle of joy may be arriving one day early. Have you checked your e=mail?

Update: We’ve received reports that the iPhone 4 might be arriving a day early for customers who had ordered it through AT&T, too. Thanks, @stevehuskisson

Foursquare and C-SPAN Team Up for Political Education

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 03:07 AM PDT

C-SPAN is going geosocial with political and policy education through a new partnership with Foursquare that will be announced later today.

The cable network will have a major presence on the mobile geosocial network, starting with Foursquare.com/cspan, a completely customized homepage for the C-SPAN/Foursquare partnership. It is the central nexus for C-SPAN content, including official tips and information about the cable network’s new Foursquare presence.

Tips are at the core of the partnership. In public locations throughout Washington, D.C., C-SPAN will offer educational tips about U.S. public policy, politics, and government. If you check in to the U.S. Capitol for example, you will be able to access a YouTube video explaining aspects of the Federal Budget. More tips will be added outside of D.C. later on.

The second part of the partnership focuses on the “C-SPAN Digital Bus,” a virtual entity that will travel the country, providing tips and checking in at locations across the U.S.

Partnering with media companies isn’t new for Foursquare — Bravo, The New York Times and MTV are just a few of the many with Foursquare presences. The C-SPAN partnership strikes us as both unique and utterly useful, though. Tourists in D.C. can use Foursquare to gain a great deal of knowledge about the lesser-known facts of the Beltway.

Adobe Launches Flash 10.1 For Mobile

Posted: 22 Jun 2010 12:45 AM PDT

Two weeks after releasing the desktop version of Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe has now launched Flash 10.1 for mobile.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that users will actually be able to install it right away. Flash 10.1 will be immediately available for phones using Android 2.2 (or Froyo), but that version of Android hasn’t been deployed to devices yet.

Adobe has shipped Flash to its other device partners, too, which means it’ll soon be available on Symbian, Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry, Palm webOS, and other platforms. Adobe says it’s hoping to bring Flash 10.1 to more than half of all smartphones by 2012.

One platform is, of course, absent — Apple’s iOS4. Steve Jobs and Apple have decided that Flash simply isn’t good enough for mobile devices, and it will probably never be supported on the iPhone and the iPad.

The question is: Can Adobe prove that Flash is good enough for mobile on the new, powerful generation of smartphones (other than the iPhone)? We won’t know that until the final version of Flash 10.1 for mobile is properly tested, so for now it’s still a battle of words, and Adobe has thrown in a lot of those.

According to Adobe, Flash 10.1 for mobile has been completely redesigned from the ground up; it supports multi-touch operation, smart zooming and accelerometer-aided device rotation. It’s been thoroughly optimized to work with “all major chip and mobile platforms”; in short, we can expect better CPU, battery and power consumption. Finally, Adobe claims that most existing Flash content will “just work.”

If Adobe delivers on these promises, who knows, maybe after a couple of years Apple will reconsider its stance and embrace the platform once again?

“LEGO Universe”: Adventure and Build with Your Friends [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 08:38 PM PDT

Fans of LEGO will be excited to learn about the first massively multiplayer online game based on the LEGO play experience: LEGO Universe launches to young and old alike on October 26 on both the PC and Mac platforms.

In the game, players are challenged to use the element of “imagination” to solve problems and build solutions for fighting back the Maelstrom, an evil force that must be pushed back in order to restore harmony to the universe. As in other MMO titles, your character adventures through the game’s universe completing quests and accruing new equipment, which determines your Lego minifigure’s stats in lieu of more typical character leveling and experience point progression systems.

Beyond the story-driven gameplay, LEGO Universe also features an extensive building and behaviors system that lets players create and animate their own LEGO environments complete with a scripting language that gives life to their creations. Think of it as the online equivalent of the LEGO playtime you may have enjoyed as a kid, with the ability to imagine almost any creation and see it realized on screen. Plus, you’re able to inhabit and enjoy your own created LEGO corner with any friends you see fit to invite into your customized world.

From what we’ve seen of the game so far, developer NetDevil have done a superb job staying true to the spirit and mentality of the LEGO brand while simultaneously creating a new virtual online version of a franchise many of us have known and loved since childhood. LEGO Universe is a family-friendly title that we suspect will end up captivating a good chunk of adult players along with the more obvious younger demographic of brick enthusiasts.

LEGO Universe launches October 26, with early access commencing October 12 for players who pre-order the game. The $39.99 title includes a free 30-day subscription to the massively-multiplayer title, which will run you a $9.99 per month subscription cost thereafter. Check out a video demo from the game’s Creative Director Ryan Seabury below, along with some screenshots in the companion gallery.

What do you think of the game so far? Do you have any thoughts about this most modern iteration of the LEGO pantheon?

New App Color-Codes and Filters Your Tweets

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 07:13 PM PDT

Mashable's Spark of Genius series highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, see details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.

Name: Twimbow

Quick Pitch: Twimbow is a colorful, web-based Twitter client with a focus on filtering.

Genius Idea: This app embraces the concept that, for some of us, Twitter is the new e-mail.

At first glance, the interface will remind you of Tweetdeck and Seesmic Web so much that it’ll make your head hurt. The feature sets are almost identical, with both Seesmic and Tweetdeck having the relative advantages of age, stability and a generally more thorough toolbelt for users, including multiple apps and multiple accounts.

(Note: While Tweetdeck doesn’t yet have a web-based client, we saw them demo one at Google I/O.)

Twimbow’s main distinction lies with its bright and shiny interface, which lets you assign a different color to different users and groups and change the color of a tweet shown in the app by adding a #color tag. You can then sort and filter tweets by color. In the end, it works kind of like Gmail’s labels and folders.

In future iterations, you’ll be able to track and color-code keywords, too, making Twimbow an interesting and viable option for brand managers and social media marketers.

All your conversations, DMs, favorites and retweets are contained in a single column; the colored filters do the sorting for you, even turning certain people or “colors” on and off at your discretion. (This is a particularly great feature when a buddy is attending a conference and decides to start live-tweeting a panel that has no relevance to you. You can temporarily “mute” the chatterbox without unfollowing him or her.)

Twimbow’s creators used HTML5 and CSS3 to create this interesting and useful web app.

If you think this app is something you’d like to test or use, go to the Twimbow site to sign up for notification. The app is currently in a gloriously buggy pre-alpha with a proper alpha coming in a few weeks and a more stable public beta rolling out this fall.

How do you think Twimbow will fare in the competitive market of Twitter clients?

Verizon Offers Contract-Free Option for FiOS

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 05:40 PM PDT

One of the most infuriating parts of buying broadband Internet service is getting stuck in a 2-year contract even if you’ve never tried the service out before. Today, Verizon moved to eliminate that issue for its FiOS service by introducing a contract-free plan.

Like other broadband providers, Verizon incentivizes new customers to sign up by offering reduced prices for the first several months of service. Normally those “savings” only come with a contract, but Verizon now offers the discounted rates on its TV/phone/Internet bundles for a full year without any contract, equipment included.

You can still sign a 2-year contract if you want to keep the discounted rates for two years, and in that case the company now offers a “worry-free guarantee” that ensures you won’t incur any cancellation fees if you decide FiOS isn’t for you and cancel within the first 30 days of starting service.

Both of these programs are available in the California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia and the District of Columbia — at least, in the neighborhoods where Verizon FiOS is available at all. Additionally, the contract-free option is available in Indiana, Oregon, South Carolina and Washington.

This might be hyperbole, but sometimes it seems like every time you get a new gadget or piece of software you need to sign a 2-year contract. It’s hardly a consumer-friendly solution, and given today’s increasingly mobile and transient lifestyles, agreeing to receive service at one home for two years is almost laughable for some people.

Point is, we’d like to see more of this from other providers, or even from other divisions at Verizon. That’s not to say Verizon is the only one that offers such a deal — it isn’t. It’s just good to see a major service provider join the ranks.

Apple Now Stores and Shares Your iPhone’s Location

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 04:06 PM PDT

Apple’s new privacy policy contains a small new paragraph of big importance: it gives the company license to store “the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device” and share it with “partners and licensees.” As if we haven’t had enough privacy kerfuffles of late.

Apple goes on to assure customers in the remainder of the new clause that location data is “collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you.” Still, there seems to be no effective method of opting out of the data storage and sharing, as you’ll need to agree to the new terms and conditions before downloading new apps or any media from the iTunes store.

The company gives a nod to MobileMe’s “Find My iPhone” feature as one of the services that requires personal location information to work, but it’s not saying much about other details, including who the data will be shared with and for how long it will be stored. Apple says the information it collects will be used to “provide and improve location-based products and services”; check out the full text of the new paragraph in the privacy policy below:

“To provide location-based services on Apple products, Apple and our partners and licensees may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the real-time geographic location of your Apple computer or device. This location data is collected anonymously in a form that does not personally identify you and is used by Apple and our partners and licensees to provide and improve location-based products and services. For example, we may share geographic location with application providers when you opt in to their location services.

Some location-based services offered by Apple, such as the MobileMe "Find My iPhone" feature, require your personal information for the feature to work.”

What do you think: should iPhone, iPad and Mac users be wary of this change in the privacy policy? Will this be business as usual now that geographic data is easy to come by on most of our devices?

Hands-On: iBooks for iPhone iOS 4 [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 03:54 PM PDT

iBooks for iPhone [iTunes link] is now available. Like its big brother on the iPad, iBooks is an elegant, easy-to-use e-reading solution. While we haven’t had a ton of time with the pint-sized version of the app, our first impressions are very positive.

The iBooks interface is smartly designed, and pages and text are rendered extremely well. Simply put, other e-reader applications pale in comparison to iBooks. It’s only too bad that the selection isn’t as good as some of its rivals. The newest version of iBooks supports in-app PDF viewing, as well as ePub files.

Check out this excerpt from our longer iOS 4 Walkthrough video that shows off iBooks for iPhone and compares it head-on with the Kindle app. You can also take a look at the features in the gallery below.

9 Universal Principles of Viral Media Sites

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 02:40 PM PDT

Ian Spector is the creator of Chuck Norris Facts. His latest book, Chuck Norris Cannot Be Stopped: 400 All-New Facts About the Man Who Knows Neither Fear Nor Mercy is now in bookstores everywhere. He is currently working on two startups and provides web strategy consulting services. Follow him on Twitter.

There’s a good chance that you’ve come across the word “meme” at some point or another in the past few years. It’s an arcane academic concept but at the same time it’s also one of those things that you can identify, but can’t describe easily. Richard Dawkins coined the phrase in an effort to help explain cultural evolution in his 1976 book, The Selfish Gene, where it’s defined as a shared element intended to be passed around within a culture, a societal analog to a gene. Everything from Tamagotchis to “That’s what she said” count as memes. On the Internet, memes are more visible than ever before, and what’s more, they’re also serious business.

Now, even though it may not be immediately apparent, there are a number of universal qualities that all successful viral memes have in common.

1. Content is Everything

On the Internet, content is everything. It's what will make or break a site. Why would anyone want to go to a website if there’s nothing interesting or entertaining to see? Visitors will flock to your creation so long as you consistently feed users good content that’s appropriately presented and packaged.

There are two major types of content: great original content (Stuff White People Like, The Landlord from Funny Or Die) and curated, user-generated content (Regretsy, FAILblog).

This may read like a page from the Book of ‘Duh’, but play to your strengths. For instance, if you’re not a fan of writing a whole lot, don’t start a long-form, text-heavy blog, and stick to editing incoming user-generated content.

2. Simplicity

“Going viral necessitates a universal understanding of the joke," says Lauren Leto, co-founder of Texts from Last Night. "There’s a reason commentary on quantum physics doesn’t pull the attention of the masses, but a joke about a cat stuck in a box does – because it’s a quick laugh. The easier to digest, the more people will forward the content around."

Beyond the content, your site should be simple to interact with as well. We all know that every type of person is on the web now, so by designing a simple, elegant, and intuitive site for users, as well as administrators, may save you a lot of headaches down the road.

Sometimes you don't even need to build something fancy and custom yourself. This Is Why You're Fat runs off of Tumblr, which is a great platform for testing out whether or not the public will eat up your idea, and also has integrated sharing features which is helpful for growth. Depending on what your project is, you may not need to expand beyond it, but if you do, the next step up would be a service like Wordpress, which affords the administrator more customized options. You can always build your own site, but that can often be time and cash-intensive.

3. Emote

The brain is very good at making associations. If your content is able to get people to respond emotionally, get people to laugh and enjoy themselves, you're gold. That emotional connection serves as a sort of glue, binding the association between your content or site and enjoyment and with each exposure to entertaining, funny, or otherwise emotionally provocative content, that association between "your site" and "totally amazing" becomes stronger and stronger.

Here's a quick case study: According to my network of unnamed spies, there are two groups of people who seem to be drawn to LOLCats. The first are people who just find it funny. The other group is made up of the passionate folks perhaps better known as "crazy cat ladies." Their overwhelming love of cats drives them to spend time on the site as well as to spend money on the books that are available now as well. Think about that.

One of the biggest emotional hooks is empathy, which is where the success from sites like Awkward Family Photos and Shit My Dad Says come from. We’ve all got our own awkward family portraits, and we’ve all heard our parents say ridiculous things. White people will laugh at themselves reading Stuff White People Like, while non-white people will gladly laugh at the ironically accurate absurdity of “the definitive guide to the unique tastes of millions.” Note how race and family are some big-picture concepts. There’s lots of potential material in those spaces to play with, which can get users to respond to easily.

4. Own Your Space

What do sites like Texts from Last Night, Urban Dictionary, My Mom is a Fob, and FML have in common? They're all masters of their own space.

They're original concepts unattached to any other properties, and by virtue of that, their owners can do things like make T-shirts, produce iPhone and iPad apps, and even develop TV shows (Shit My Dad Says landed a TV deal with CBS not too long ago and its slated to star William Shatner).

Then there are a those other sites that are inherently related to some third party “black box.” Sometimes that third party has no problem with what you're doing (Remember Rick Astley Rickrolling the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade?), sometimes they do. Avoid any potential messes by working on something completely unique and independent.

5. Share It

As with all things on the ever-growing social web, memes live and die by the ability to share content. If your content isn't bite-sized and isn't surrounded by some controls to share: Like, Tweet, Stumble, Digg, or something else, you're doing something wrong.

“Your content should be instantly identifiable no matter where it ends up on the web," says Ben Bator, co-founder of Texts From Last Night. "Humorous material is meant to be shared, so don’t limit the possibilities.”

My personal favorite sharing control is the "share by e-mail" function found on ICanHasCheezburger. Remember how crazy cat ladies love that stuff? Guess what else they love to do – that's right, forward everyone they know those pictures, so why not have that right on the site? Brilliant, though unfortunate for the rest of us.

If you’re using a blogging service like Wordpress or Tumblr, make sure that that sharing via third party services (Facebook, Twitter) as well as controls like AddThis are enabled.

At the launch of your project, you should also make sure that there are appropriate avenues for discussion, sharing, and fandom on third party services. Get yourself a Facebook Fan page, add certain pages to Stumble Upon, register appropriate Twitter handles, and popularize the hashtags you want to use. Being in control of your content outside of your site is important.

6. Protect Your Content

Because you're working on the Internet, there's a good chance that your content will spill out everywhere besides your website. Set Google Alerts for your site's name and even for popular content (if it's text-based) so that you can be alerted to copycat websites or apps.

You should have an attorney send any copycat sites cease and desist notices immediately to the owners of those sites. You don't absolutely need an attorney to do this for you, but you're usually guaranteed better results. Most copycats will stop immediately once they hear from you if you've done the job properly.

In addition, you should protect yourself from potentially angry users by creating a bulletproof “Terms of Service” page. “[It] should be the first page you complete. Make your intentions clear, otherwise you will just piss off your users (and possibly lose out on a book deal)," says Bator. Unless you're an oracle, it's unlikely that you know what direction your site will follow as it grows.

"Launch with a broad but legit terms of service and take it from there," suggests Jessica Amason, co-creator of This Is Why You're Fat and Viral Media Editor at BuzzFeed.

7. Listen

The only reason Chuck Norris Facts exist is because I asked the visitors to my site what they wanted to see. I had started my site with “Vin Diesel Facts” and after getting a few million hits and some mentions in the press, I put up a poll to ask visitors who the site should include next. The rest is history.

Don't necessarily crowdsource your major decisions to your users since you probably don't know or trust them that well, but it's just as much their site as it is yours to a certain extent. Users/members ought to have a say in things, if only to let you know if you're going in the right direction.

8. Don't Force It

There's a good chance you've heard this phrase in one context or another. Most memes seem to start and grow organically — their successes are a result of good content, stellar execution, and everything else previously mentioned. It's really hard to work backwards.

Some people in the meme-machine world will actually start a large number of sites per year, expect most of them to fail, and just support the ones that take off. Others think that because they may have succeeded with one meme that they will be guaranteed success with their next venture. The best example of this in recent memory is follow-up project that the creator of the Million Dollar Homepage started after he finished making his million bucks. The man made a million dollars. Anyone in his shoes probably thought that the next move, whatever it might be, would be golden, but it was a total flop.

But hey, expect to make mistakes. You learn more from them anyway.

9. Love it, and Let it Go

All memes reach a point when their 15 minutes are up and the traffic levels off to die-hard fanatics, and a relatively constant stream of new visitors who come and go. As with all things in life, make sure you love what you're doing. There's a lot of work involved with running these things. I had to review thousands and thousands of submissions at my site's peak. It’s hardly fun, especially knowing you're on a ticking clock.

Also, be sure to consider the implications of being the face of your meme. The people who seem to be into it the meme I created most right now are annoying frat guys who spend their days “icing” their “bros,” and that's not necessarily a group that I want to call myself the leader of. Sure, it's great that so many people from around the world have enjoyed what I'm responsible for, but at the end of the day, it's pretty ridiculous.

What are some of your favorite Internet memes? Tell us in the comments below.

Augmented Reality Ice Cream Machine Trades Smiles for Desserts

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 02:22 PM PDT

Customer experience company SapientNitro and ice cream makers Unilever are teaming up to train us all to smile for our just desserts — they’ve developed what they’re calling the world's first smile-activated vending machine.

SapientNitro is currently testing out the machine at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival (the event that dude sold his soul to Twitter to attend). Apparently, the machine uses augmented reality to draw passersby into a branded world — i.e. when one looks at the screen at the front of the machine, one’s face is outfitted with mustaches and other kinds of tomfoolery.

After it prompts you to smile, the dessert-vending device measures the wideness of your grin using facial recognition technology, snaps a pic, and, with your permission, uploads that snap to Facebook. (You can peruse a gallery of smiles now on Cannes Sapient Nitro’s Facebook Page). Next, you choose the free treat of your choice via the touchscreen at the front of the machine and collect your sweet reward. (Treats will only be free at Cannes.)

Both augmented reality and facial recognition have been in heavy rotation among a bevy of brands and social networking sites lately (Facebook has its share of recognition apps, and everyone from Esquire to Urbanspoon has taken a crack at augmented reality). Still, we think the social media integration is what makes this campaign interesting. Although participants have yet to tag themselves in the photos featured in the gallery, we can imagine folks adding these snaps to their Facebook galleries, thus spreading word of the vending machine virally around the web.

According to SapientNitro, these machines will roll out to high-traffic locations like shopping malls across the globe over the next 18 months, and will accept cash as well as grins for the sugary products. Will you smile for your sundae?

Disclosure: Ben & Jerry's, one of Unilever’s brands, is also a Mashable sponsor.

As always, big thanks to all who tuned in for this week’s Free Music Monday! If you find something you like in this feature, please feel free to share it with your music-loving friends. You can always check out the latest edition of FMM, plus all the past editions, on the Free Music Monday tag page, so be sure to tune in each week. We’ve also included the list of past Free Music Mondays at the end of this post in case you want to check out the back catalog.

Huge thanks to everyone who has submitted tracks. If you sent us something and we haven’t included it yet, stay tuned for a future Free Music Monday. Here is how to submit your music to FMM:

Attention artists/labels: there are new submission guidelines for Free Music Monday. Please pick one track you’re willing to give away to Mashable readers as a free download and either a) include it as an attachment in your email to barb+FMM AT mashable DOT com (25 MB file size limit, please) or b) include a link to a location where we can download the song (use temporary file sharing sites like zshare at your own risk, because we may not get around to auditioning your track before the links expire). If you want to use “in exchange for email” or other specific widgets to offer the track to Mashable readers that’s totally fine — just send us or point us to the embed code. Please also include any relevant information about the artist (or link to their bio) plus their Twitter account, if they have one.

If you’d like to also point us to more of the submitted artist’s work online where we can stream and/or download it, please feel free — but you must complete either a or b to be considered for Free Music Monday. Due to overwhelming submission volume we are sadly unable to include each and every submission or even reply to every inquiry. If we haven’t posted your track yet, you are welcome to submit another new track at a reasonable and totally not pushy time interval. If we’ve already posted a track from your band or artist, we are unlikely to double up and post something else from you for some time — as much as we love all of you! This makes FMM more diverse and inclusive of new music. Thanks!

How Salespeople Are Using Social Media for Real Results

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 02:00 PM PDT

The Real Results series is supported by Gist, an online service that helps you build stronger relationships. By connecting your inbox to the web, you get business-critical information about key people and companies. See how it works here.

salesman imageThe days of door-to-door salespeople might be drawing to a close, but that doesn't mean that people have stopped selling things. The Internet is a great resource to get your goods into the right hands, but it can also be a confusing mess of options. How do you find the right people online? How can you get your products to them?

We've found a collection of small companies and websites that can help you get the most out of your social media network. Whether you’re a tiny Italian ice shop, a regular seller, or a seasoned vet – these resources can help you get real results.

Online Vendors

foodzie image

One of social media's greatest benefits is how easy it is to get brand exposure. Your products aren't limited by having to set up a physical shop or take out ads in the local newspaper. However, with so many online vendor websites (such as eBay or even Craigslist) available, it can be difficult to find your customers through all the noise.

Craigslist and eBay are expansive platforms that reach a huge swathe of customers. While this is great for reaching a large market, it can be difficult for individual salespeople to get their products featured, or noticed. Instead, look to niche online markets that suit the kind of products you're selling.

Imagine you're a local farmer selling honey. Selling a jar on eBay might be tricky, however, sites like Foodzie or Foodoro that focus on selling goods from small food producers is a more focused way to get exposure and sell your product. A quick search can turn up other niche online vendor hubs.

Creating Updates

rickshaw twitter image

Once you've found a place to sell your goods, you need to let people know about it. Facebook fan pages and Twitter accounts are two great ways to let existing or potential customers know about your product. Food carts across the country have already jumped on the wagon in order to let their customers know where they'll be parked. For example, New York's Rickshaw Dumpling Truck regularly tweets its location for the day with light-hearted updates and customer service.

But what if you don't have a food cart? Twitter updates are still a good way to build buzz and excitement and create a community of customers.

Group Buying

buy with me image

Group buying (or mob buying) is becoming increasingly popular as a win-win for businesses and customers alike. Sites like Groupon, Deals for Deeds, Buy with Me, and Social Buy provide its users with large discounts on businesses. While there is an expected discount in the transaction, group buying sites allow salespeople to reach new customers and draw in large chunks of profit. Most group buying sites (including the three listed) have a section where buyers can sign up to be a featured vendor. Some sites, like Deals for Deeds (based in Washington D.C.), include an option for buyers to donate their savings to charity.

Sellers beware: Because of the nature of group buying, most sites are regionally based so make sure you find a site or group that is around your area or willing to sell your products online.

Foursquare Specials

foursquare rita ice image

Foursquare is more than just an invasive new technology for young folk; it's a powerful tool for salespeople to share their products through social media. Sellers now have access to a small business dashboard that allows them to offer rewards and special deals to their most loyal customers. One such example is Rita's Ice in Bellmore, NY. The Italian ice shop was able to attract customers over its competitors because of its specials and offers – some of which were only accessible via Foursquare.

Foursquare is a good way to both find new customers and reward long-time patrons for their loyalty.

The Dangers

girl scout cookie image

Yup, even the Girl Scouts – long-known for their door-to-door cookie drives — have turned to social media in order to sell their strangely addictive cookies. The Girl Scouts previously shunned the online world for safety reasons but are just now experimenting with a new, safe online outreach to allow customers to buy their favorites. You can find corporate accounts for Girls Scouts on Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and YouTube. But more importantly, you’ll find Girl Scouts everywhere sending Facebook messages to their friends and family members, inquiring on cookie orders.

While they are reaching a much larger audience, the Girl Scouts illustrates the danger of tarnishing a traditional brand image through selling via social media. They are so associated with door-to-door sales, that some see the turn online as a step backwards for the Girl Scouts’ image.

Branding is just as important for any other business or salesperson. Define your brand and decide how you can market it online without compromising your authenticity. With a little bit of forethought and tenacity, you can use social media to sell your goods with real results.

Are you seeing real results from your social media sales initiatives? Let us know in the comments below.

Would You Break Up via Facebook? [STATS]

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 01:38 PM PDT

If you’ve ever checked up on your alleged S.O.’s Facebook page only to find that the “In a Relationship” status had been switched to “Single,” you know the feeling is gut-wrenching. But breaking up via a passive-aggressive Facebook update is becoming more and more common.

In fact, a recent poll shows that one out of four newly dumped Facebook users found out about the breakup by seeing it publicly broadcast on Facebook. Ouch!

Facebook dating app AreYouInterested conducted this survey on its Facebook Page, gathering about 1,000 responses in total. The results are telling. Apparently, a lot of us are using this social network to do the “dirty work” of dating, from surreptitious splits to manipulative messaging.

  • Almost 25% of respondents found out their own relationship was over by seeing it on Facebook first.
  • Around 21% of respondents said they would carry out a Facebook breakup by changing their status to single.
  • Nearly 40% of respondents have updated their status on Facebook so the person they're dating sees they have plans.
  • And almost 35% of respondents have used their Facebook status to make someone think they have plans, even if they don't.

The vast majority of respondents to this survey were guys; just 30% of survey takers were women.

Kindle and Nook Prices Reduced to Less Than $200

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 01:01 PM PDT

We are now entering a brave new world of e-reader price wars: Amazon has slashed the price of its Kindle to $189 from $259, and Barnes & Noble’s Wi-Fi-only version of the Nook will retail for $149.

The Kindle will still be available with 3G wireless connectivity without a contract or any monthly charges.

With the arrival of iOS 4, which brings Apple’s iBooks app to millions of devices, e-readers are also getting a new competitor: the iPhone. Although the iPhone lacks the larger screen and more book-friendly interface of the iPad, the barrier to entry is now ridiculously low, since all a current iPhone user has to do is download the free iBooks app and start browsing for titles with no extra hardware required.

The price cuts could have been initiated in anticipation of this development, which was announced two weeks ago. Or they could have been planned as a way to position e-readers as cheaper — if less fully featured — alternatives to the new (and apparently popular) iPad. Of course, there’s already a Kindle iPad app, but for people who just want a good way to download and read e-books, a straight e-reader gadget is not a bad option.

What do you think is the best, most cost-effective e-reader for the average person today? Do you think these price cuts will affect consumer purchasing decisions?

Hands-On with Pandora and iOS 4 [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 12:02 PM PDT

Now that iOS 4 is here, we wanted to take a look at some of the coolest new features. Multitasking has long been one of the most-requested features for the iPhone, and one application scenario has consistently been used to argue for multitasking support: Pandora.

While users have always been able to listen to music while doing other tasks using the built-in iPod app, device owners who prefer to use a streaming service like Pandora haven’t been able to do so. That can make long trips — you know, those occasions where you might want to read a book or group of articles and listen to music — pretty painful.

Fortunately, Pandora [iTunes link] is fully supported in iOS 4. We’ve put together this video illustrating how Pandora works on iOS 4.

As you can see below, the application works great and integrates ingeniously with the iPhone’s new app switcher function. To quote The Office, “This is totally going to change the way I work out.” What do you think of the new Pandora?

Social Media Integration Drives Major Clicks for E-mail Marketers [STUDY]

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 11:54 AM PDT

E-mail messages that include options to share content on social media sites drive significant increases in click-throughs according to a new study released today by GetResponse, an e-mail marketing firm.

Specifically, the study of 500 million e-mails sent using the service found that e-mails that included options like share on Facebook or Twitter generated a 30% higher click-through rate than emails without them. Moreover, when e-mails included at least three different sharing options, publishers experienced a 55% higher CTR on average.

Despite these findings, GetResponse reports that only 11.2% of e-mails actually offer three or more sharing options. That's up a bit from stats published last year on the same subject, but still low considering what are becoming increasingly clear benefits of social media integration.

At the same time, we're seeing a quick move by e-mail marketing service providers into the realm of social. In the past couple months, we've seen ExactTarget buy CoTweet and Constant Contact acquire NutshellMail. We see the trend of e-mail marketing getting more social continuing, especially with more numbers pointing to the positive return on what's a pretty simple investment.

Facebook Location Features Confirmed and Coming Soon

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 11:39 AM PDT

Mark Zuckerberg confirmed to press in London today that Facebook will indeed be launching location-based features in the near future.

According to several reports, the young CEO told attendees at a local Facebook Developer Garage event, “We are finishing designing our application soon and hope to offer it soon.”

This confirmation is the culmination of months of rumors milling around the blogosphere.

In March, The New York Times reported that location features would be launching in April. In May, Advertising Age said location would come to Facebook in June.

Of course, we were all expecting Facebook to announce major location features at f8, its developer conference in April. But while Zuckerberg did introduce the Open Graph API, no mention was made of location.

Finally, toward the end of May, we learned that several projects had been sidelined while Facebook engineers and execs gathered to hammer out a new set of privacy interface changes — damage control for the media and PR fiasco that had built up around users’ privacy complaints and confusion. With that particular hoopla largely out of the way, we can assume that Facebook staff have been able to devote more time to developing, designing and debugging new functionality for the website and mobile interfaces, including location-based features.

While it’s good to hear from the horse’s mouth that our hopes for location features are not in vain, there’s still a lot we don’t know. Will Facebook pull and push data from existing services, such as Foursquare, Brightkite and Gowalla? Will Facebook begin to function as a checkin mechanism? Will our posts and pictures be location-tagged? What will these features mean for the brands and small businesses who use Facebook for marketing purposes? Finally, how will privacy settings for location features work, and will that result in another media-fueled tornado?

For the time being, we’ll have to wait patiently for the notoriously tight-lipped devs at Facebook to tell us what to expect.

What are your hopes and fears for Facebook location features?

“Sad Keanu Reeves” Meme Gets a Charitable URL Shortner: Kea.nu

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 10:46 AM PDT

Those of you more plugged in to the meme side of the ‘net will have already heard of “Sad Keanu Reeves,” a particularly poignant image of The Matrix (and Little Buddha!) star eating a sandwich on a park bench. Well, one journalist and Mashable contributor, Shane Snow, has found a way to take this melancholy meme and spin it toward social good.

Snow has created a URL shortener — http://kea.nu — that allows you to both easily and simply share links, get in on the most recent viral memes and benefit the charity, Stand Up 2 Cancer. All you have to do is enter the link you want shortened, and then do what you will with it (i.e. share it to Facebook, Twitter, etc). When your friends and followers click on said link, they will be directed to an ad as well as the iconic “Sad Keanu Reeves” image. The user can then click through to the link.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a URL shortener used for charitable purposes — Good.ly donates 55% of referrals fees to a charity of your choice if you use it to create a link to a product or service online. Kea.nu, however, works with all links and donates 100% of money generated to charity.

So why Stand Up 2 Cancer? According to Snow, Reeves’s sister has Leukemia, and the actor is actively involved in promoting cancer research and charities.

And for those of you worried about the toll the tool will take on your Twitter feed, Snow assures us, “After a couple weeks, we’ll 301 redirect the url so there is no more ad and your SEO can flow like Jay-Z.”

Nice.

What other memes would you like to see turned into charitable ventures?

14 Sites Changing the Way We Shop

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 10:40 AM PDT

This Innovation Series is supported by Lexus.

Let’s be honest, shopping isn’t always as fun as it should be. Between long lines, irate shoppers, communal fitting rooms (I’m looking at you Loehmann’s), distracted cashiers (I’m sorry, don’t let my purchase interrupt your texting), and simply having to part with your cold hard cash, it can be exhausting. Plus, you can’t always find what you want.

We’ve been shopping online since the mid-’90s, and the web is so much more than a viral mall. It’s become a playground for smart and savvy shoppers who know how to make the most out of a dollar. What’s more is that there are now more sites than ever before pandering to bargain hunters. Here are 14 sites changing the way we shop.

Tweeting Deals

Finding the best deals used to take a lot of effort. Now with sites like Cheap Tweet you can just sit back and let the deals fill your Twitter feed.

Each day the site’s search engine prowls more than 30,000 tweets about deals and picks the best ones. They rank the deals based on users’ votes and by how much they are being re-tweeted on Twitter. You can add Cheap Tweets to your feed or, if you aren’t a Twitter user, you can simply visit their site and view the updated feed there.

For a more personalized potential savings experience, you can sign up for a feature called the “Deal Stream” where you can check off the categories (fashion, tech, entertainment, food, and more) of things you’d be interested in finding deals on. One problem is that while you do get a ton of deals, you get a ton of deals. Some deals, like a gift card giveaway for a restaurant in Rhode Island, aren’t of any use to many people.

Group Buying

You know when you’re in line at the grocery store and somehow end up adding batteries, gum, a flashlight and the latest gossip rag to your bill at the last second? Well, online shopping hasn’t done away with impulse buying. In fact, it has made it easier, and so much better. Now, instead of schlepping over to the grocery store, all you have to do is open your inbox to find great deals, many of them being sent from group buying sites.

If you haven’t heard of group buying, this is how it works: Consumers band together via websites like Groupon, Living Social, and Tippr to get better discounts on products and services.

Recently, Groupon ran a deal offering 50% off ice skating admission and skate rental at Chelsea Piers in New York. The deal went into effect once 200 people bought in. The offer ran for 24 hours and had nearly 1,800 deal takers. It’s neat to see how many other people have an intense desire to do some summer skating (the discounted admission expires Sept. 30).

Each site offers different deals by the city, and if you want to make your life even easier, you can sign up for Yipit, which organizes all the deals on the aforementioned sites and recommends the best ones for you based on the kind of deals you are looking for. This is great, because you don’t have e-mails from each individual site flooding your inbox.

The downside to these group buying sites is that it’s impulsive shopping at its best and worst. Deals usually only last a maximum of three days and can run as short as 24 hours, forcing you to make your decision quickly. I spent all day wondering if I really needed that tour of New York City in a hearse from Dead Apple Tours for $22. Groupon changes its deals daily, so I missed out. I guess I’ll never know.

Coupons

Do you have memories of your mother or grandmother religiously clipping out coupons from the weekly fliers? Well, coupons don’t just save you $1 off cereal anymore, and websites like Retail Me Not and Coupon Cabin can help you save on almost anything.

Retail Me Not was made for the online shopper, as well as for those who still venture outside their homes to make their purchases. Users can search for coupon codes for over 50,000 online stores. The code “smart30ch” will save you $30 off all smartphones at Verizon Wireless when you shop online, for example, or if you search for Victoria Secret deals, the code “SP1020425″ should get you $10 off a bra. Coupon codes can be hit and miss, but this site lets users vote if the code actually snagged them some savings.

For those who prefer human interaction when dropping some cash, you can search printable coupons in your zip code for specific items like laundry detergent, dry cleaning, or pizza.

Coupon Cabin offers similar features, but also has a handy feature where you can compare in-store and online prices to find the cheapest one and can then seek out coupons for that store to make it an even better deal.

Personal Shopper

Finding the deals is half the battle, and fashionistas looking to add the most designer labels to their closets, while still having something to actually put in their Fendi clutches will revel in sites like Shop It To Me and My Perfect Sale.

These sites scour the Internet to bring you your favorite designers, deeply discounted. Shop It To Me asks for which brands, sizes and items you are looking for. Then you can choose how often you want them to e-mail you the latest in slashed prices: daily, weekly or bi-weekly. The great thing about this site is that it takes your size into account. It’s great if that Marc Jacobs blazer is 50% off at Saks Fifth Avenue, but if it’s not in your size, then who cares?

Sample Sales

Online sample sales are a clotheshorse’s best friend. A slew of sites like Ideeli and Gilt have popped up online in the last few years. The premise is simple, these sites offer great discounts on brand name clothing and accessories, with new sales starting every day. The catch is that you have to jump to get the deals.

There is a limited number of each item available, and the hottest stuff will sell out fast. So fast that Gilt has an app for the iPhone and iPad, so you never miss the start of a sale.

While both sites are free, they both require that you be invited to join, and Ideeli has a paid members option where for $6.99 each month you become part of the “1st Row” for access to new sales one hour before everyone else.

The Big Ones

The marriage of shopping and the Internet is a glorious union that has brought us old faithfuls like Amazon, Craigslist and eBay. In the last 15 years these sites have transformed shoppers from passive vessels left to buy whatever merch was offered in their local malls into active and sometimes aggressive consumers who will demand, search and find what they are looking for, at a price they find acceptable.

As some of the most popular destinations for online shopping, you can find everything from groceries on Amazon, to a signed photo of Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls on eBay, to a parking space in Hoboken, NJ on Craigslist. With this much access to the world’s goods, shopping has been forever changed.

Gmail for iPad Updated [PICS]

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 10:24 AM PDT

Gmail for the iPad is getting a new interface, we’ve just learned via the official Google Mobile blog.

The improvements center around the compose interface, used for writing e-mails on Gmail. Now, when an iPad user composes a new message in Gmail, she will be able to do so in a large, full-screen window instead of the split view that also displays inbox messages. The new interface creates more space for writing while also removing distractions. The update also includes an important bug fix for scrolling on longer messages.

For now, the new interface will only be available to English-speaking users in the U.S.; we’re sure Google will start rolling it out to others soon.

Here’s what Gmail on the iPad will look like moving forward:

And here’s the new interface compared with the old:

What do you think so far? Will this interface make it easier to compose new e-mails on a tablet?

California Considers Selling Ads on Digital License Plates

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 10:06 AM PDT

The California DMV might soon issue digital license plates that display ads when a vehicle is not in motion, as a means to draw in revenue to battle the state’s high deficit.

San Jose Mercury News reports that Democratic State Senator Curren Price submitted a bill focused on the initiative, and that it was passed with no opposition. Now the state’s transportation authorities will consult with the Highway Patrol and other groups to decide whether or not to go through with the plan.

Advocates believe the digital license plates could actually cut license plate construction costs and bring money to the state via ad sales. Hypothetically the tech could be used to display personalized messages as well.

The obvious quip here would be one about accidents caused by drivers distracted by flashy advertisements, but the plan is to only show ads when a vehicle has been stationary for more than four consecutive seconds. Things would stay simple when the vehicle is moving, and the license plate number would remain visible at all times.

On the other hand, some people will complain that there are already too many ads out there. Billboards line the highways, cabs carry ads, and cities and states have been selling ads on buses and trains for ages. Maybe that’s too much, or maybe we’re all accustomed to tuning it out by now anyway.
