The First iPad Compatible Vest is Here

Posted: 06 Apr 2010 12:57 AM PDT

The iPhone is not a problem – it fits into most pockets and you can make do without special iPhone pockets in your clothes. But the iPad is a much bigger beast; if you’re not content to wear it in your hands or a backpack, very few clothing items have big enough pockets to accommodate it.

Enter Scottevest, the company known for gadget-friendly clothing, and their SeV Travel Vest, which is now compatible with the iPad. When we say “compatible”, we really mean “it has one humongous inside pocket for the iPad”, but that’s what you’re really looking for, right?

The iPad compatible SeV Travel Vest is available now for $100.

CloudApp Brings Drag-and-Drop Cloud Uploads to the Mac

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 10:28 PM PDT

This post is part of Mashable’s Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.

Name: CloudApp

Quick Pitch: “Share files fast with your Mac. The simplest, most effective way to share files.”

Genius Idea: CloudApp is a utility for Mac OS X 10.5 and higher that makes it super simple to upload files under 50MB to the cloud for easy sharing. Thanks to plugin support (called Raindrops) and easy hot-key assignments, you can literally upload files and folders of all kinds quickly and easily and then get the shortened URL location of the file copied to your clipboard to make sharing even simpler.

There are a lot of great services that make it easy to upload files and folders to the cloud — Dropbox is one of my personal favorites. Sometimes you just want to upload a file though — like a screenshot, folder or an MP3 to the web, and you want to quickly get a URL so that you can share that file with friends.

This is exactly what CloudApp does. You can either drag-and-drop files directly to the CloudApp menubar or you can assign a hotkey that will automatically upload selected files from Finder or files or images from other apps like iPhoto and Aperture.

Once the file is uploaded, the URL is copied to your clipboard. You can also configure CloudApp to automatically upload all any screenshot you take on your Mac — or file that you print to PDF directly to CloudApp.

CloudApp has an easy to use web interface that lets you access your uploads, delete them, and share the URLs with others. Linebreak S.L., the team behind CloudApp, is also working on an iPhone and iPad app, as well as a paid upgrade and custom URLs.

One feature of CloudApp that I particularly appreciate is that if you select a group of files or a folder for upload, CloudApp automatically zips that file group or folder upon upload. Then when you share the download URL with others, this is what they see:

CloudApp is simple, intuitive and extensible. Raindrops offer third parties a great way to integrate their own services or apps with CloudApp and you can download a number of Raindrops from the site. CloudApp uses Amazon S3 and Heroku to store files redundantly on multiple devices across multiple data centers.

CloudApp is free and while the client is only for Mac users, any user with a web browser can download files from the service. If you have a Mac and you’re looking for a dead-simple way to store and share files and folders, give CloudApp a shot!

Do you use any cloud-based services for sharing files and folders? Let us know!

Yelp Makes Big Changes in Effort to End Extortion Claims

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 09:00 PM PDT

Local review powerhouse Yelp is rolling out a number of product changes on Tuesday in an effort to put to rest allegations that it hides negative reviews in exchange for money. Such allegations aren't a new problem for Yelp, but came to a head in February when a class action lawsuit was filed against the company and included the headline-grabbing term "extortion scheme."

Among the changes being made to address this issue, all reviews that are filtered by Yelp's algorithm will now be visible in one place to anyone that wants to see them. Looking through filtered reviews, which can be accessed via a new link on all business pages, users can expect to see both overly positive reviews that Yelp suspects of being solicited by a business, and overly negative ones that Yelp suspects of being intentionally malicious — such as those written by a competitor.

The algorithm that Yelp uses to filter reviews will continue to remain private. However, the company did shed some light on the subject last month, releasing this video that explains some of the criteria that is looked at in determining which reviews to filter:

Beyond being more transparent about review filtering, Yelp is eliminating the "favorite review" feature that allows businesses to pay to prominently feature a positive customer review on their page. CEO Jeremy Stoppelman told me in an interview on Monday that one of his goals is to make it such that "even if you're not familiar with Yelp, you have a good chance of figuring out what's going on and why [when you land on a business page]."

While Yelp contends that its salespeople never told businesses that they could pay to have negative reviews removed, Stoppelman conceded that "some people got the wrong idea." By removing "favorite reviews," the company hopes any ambiguity between reviews and advertising will be eliminated. At the same time, Yelp plans to introduce a new revenue stream – video for business pages – in the near future.

This couldn't have been an easy decision for Yelp – after all, its filtering algorithm is part of what helped separate the site from its competitors. By making all filtered reviews so easily accessible, there is also a risk that the secret sauce becomes a bit more apparent (and hence, easier to game).

Nonetheless, with words like "extortion" being throw around and a slew of new location-based services cropping up, Yelp had to become more transparent, and the changes seem to represent a solid compromise between what makes the site work and what skeptics need to see.

Do you think Yelp's changes go for enough? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Hardware Faceoff: iPad vs. Netbook

The iPad is here. Apple’s much anticipated tablet device has swept the nation, and whether you can’t get enough of your iPad or want to destroy every single one, it’s tough to deny that the Apple hype machine has done it again.

During its marketing push, Apple claimed that the iPad filled a need for a new category of devices between the phone and the computer. And in almost every one of its iPad pitches, it trashed the netbook, the portable and inexpensive device focused primarily on accessing the web.

Dr. Seuss Comes to the iPad

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 07:30 PM PDT

Today’s kids are so lucky; not only do they get to enjoy the Dr. Seuss app for the iPhone, they also get to experience the Seussical one on the iPad!

Oceanhouse Media, the people that make the Dr. Seuss apps for the iPhone, have released updates for the three most popular Dr. Seuss apps, which make them iPad-compatible.

That means that if you already own The Cat in the Hat [iTunes link], Dr. Seuss’s ABC [iTunes link] or How the Grinch Stole Christmas [iTunes link], you can enjoy them on more than one device.

I went ahead and purchased the Cat in the Hat for iPad and spent some time playing with it. Readers have the option of either having the book read to them so that they can control when the pages are moved, reading the book themselves or letting the book go on auto-play.

The app reminds me a lot of the digital book programs for the Mac and PC in the late 1990s. Those CD-ROMs added animations or page manipulations for kids, along with some ways to interact with the story. The iPad app does the same thing. Tapping on an item with your fingers will show you the name of the item and read it aloud.

All in all for $2.99, these apps are cute, engaging and likely to put a smile on any young reader’s face. How do you think the iPad will impact children’s software? Let us know!

Microsoft to Unveil Social Networking Phones April 12

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 06:47 PM PDT

The rumor mill has churned on a Microsoft mobile initiative dubbed Project Pink for some time now, and according to the Wall Street Journal we’ll finally see the official results of that unveiled at a press event this coming Monday, April 12.

Project Pink is reportedly a line of mobile phones featuring social networking integrations aimed at a young demographic. The “Pink” line will reflect Microsoft’s taking a more hands-on role in developing the hardware side of the mobile spectrum, as opposed to their more typical strategy of handling the software operating system and letting partners design the phones themselves. They’ve also designed some undetailed “online services” for Pink phones in addition to the software and hardware, while Japan’s Sharp Corp. will handle the actual manufacturing.

According to the WSJ’s sources, some of the new phones will be available already later in April on Verizon. Until we have more details it’s hard to speculate on how the Pink line might impact Microsoft’s overall lackluster showing in the mobile realm, although it and the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series seem to be signs that Redmond is doing their best to put up a fight. We’ll be on hand at the event to get the details, so stay tuned for more news on Project Pink this Monday.

YouTube Kid Star Appears Before Sold-Out Crowd at Fenway Park [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 05:58 PM PDT

Last night’s Major League Baseball opening game between the Yankees and the Red Sox was a sluggers’ fest that ended with the Sox on top. Perhaps even more entertaining, however, was the crowd-moving opening speech delivered by five year-old Joshua Sacco, of YouTube fame.

Last year Sacco made YouTube fans stand up and cheer with his rendition of Herb Brooks’s (played by Kurt Russell) speech from the 2004 movie Miracle. Sacco’s YouTube rendition of the monologue became a viral sensation, netting the then four-year-old youngster TV appearances and instant web fame.

Sacco’s 15 minutes got a major boost from baseball last night. The boy was invited to deliver the same speech — adapted for the home team’s purpose — in front of a packed house at Fenway Park.

We’ve embedded video from last night’s fiery speech, as well as Sacco’s YouTube original and the Miracle speech that served as the inspiration, below.

LEAKED: HP Slate Gets Priced and Specced

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 05:18 PM PDT

It was just earlier today we saw a new HP Slate demo video emerge, and now we’ve got a lot of new juicy details including pricing and official hardware specs.

Our friends at Engadget snagged an internal presentation that looks seemingly like HP’s way of pumping up its employees for the Slate amidst all the hoopla surrounding the iPad launch. The base version of the HP Slate will retail for $549, which includes 32 GB storage, 1 GB RAM, a 1.6 GHz Atom processor, and an 8.9-inch multitouch screen at 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. A 64 GB configuration will be available for $599.

Both versions will also include an SDHC card slot, USB port, two cameras (one external 3-megapixel and one front-facing VGA for videoconferencing usage), Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, support for 1080p video playback, a dock connector for power, audio, and HDMI out to your TV, and a SIM card slot for optional 3G connectivity. They’ll both also be running Windows 7 Home Premium with a custom HP touch-optimized user interface. Battery life is reportedly five hours, which could be a point of concern as the Slate goes up against the iPad’s 10 hours.

What we still don’t know is When, although rumours have suggested a June launch for the HP Slate. This pricing scheme puts HP’s tablet device at a higher starting point than the iPad’s $499 base configuration, but you’d be shelling out that extra $50 for twice the storage (32 GB vs. 16) and arguably some other valuable features.

Now that we know the details of the iPad’s front-running Windows 7 tablet competitor, how do you think the HP Slate shapes up?

Dribbble: Twitter for Designers

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 03:53 PM PDT

Part image library, part discussion forum and part game, Dribbble is a site by and for designers. Users upload bite-sized work samples and do a show-and-tell on their latest creations or works in progress.

The site was in private beta until this past weekend, and Co-founder Dan Cederholm said the site will “likely remain invite-only. Can’t say for certain of course, but for now, absolutely.”

Here’s how Dribbble works: “Players” upload “shots,” or small images around 400 by 300 pixels. Shots are typically small segments of a work in progress, sketches that need feedback or new versions of previously uploaded shots. Players can tag their shots and comment on them. Tags make for great browsing material as well, from ampersand inspirations to typography exercises.

Players can also follow other players, whose work they can like, tweet, link to or “rebound.” The rebound element works a bit like Layer Tennis, with players riffing off and visually responding to each other’s work.

All of this fun social functionality is wrapped in a stylish Web 2.0 interface — a must for any site trying to appeal to the designer crowd.

Right now, players can upload a maximum of 24 shots each calendar month, although the site states that Dribbble is “thinking about how to award additional shots to members for meritorious behavior.”

If you’re interested in getting “drafted” — i.e., you want an invite — keep an eye on your social graph, the company advises on its site. “We routinely issue invites to existing members. When this happens, members often announce on Twitter that they are looking for folks to draft. If you're interested, be sure to have a URL handy to show off some of your work.”

Dribbble comes from Salem, MA-based web design shop SimpleBits.

First iPad Car Installation [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 03:16 PM PDT

It was one of those “waiting to happen” customizations from the get-go: The iPad has been installed in a car dashboard. A project of Sound Man Car Audio in Santa Clarita, CA, the installation video below shows the dock connector hook into an Onkyo ND-S1 Digital Media Transport, Audison Bit One D/A converter and, appropriately enough, a McIntosh amplifier.

Check out the video below to see the physical installation of the iPad as an entertainment hub in a Toyota Tacoma.

3 Ways Live Events Improve Online Communities

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 03:01 PM PDT

Katie Morse is a Community Manager at Radian6, the social media monitoring and engagement platform. She blogs at Candid Katie and is @misskatiemo on Twitter.

In my role as a Community Manager, I talk to a lot of people online as I work through my day. Whether it's responding to a tweet, commenting on a blog post, answering a question on LinkedIn, or even responding to a post in a forum, I'm chatting with people from all over the globe on a daily basis.

The funny thing is, I've never met most of these people. They know details about my life, but we've never shared a cup of coffee or looked each other in the eyes. Often, I've never even heard their voice.

While there is a lot of chatter about online communities, less is said about how to connect your online community members with each other, or with you, offline.

Here are three ways live events can help improve your online community.

1. Discovering Something New

I recently attended SXSW in Austin, TX and met a lot of people in person that I'd had the great fortune of chatting with online, sometimes for years. I discovered a lot more about these people than just what they share online, and as a result, I now have even more to chat about with them when we do connect in the digital world.

Though there many people who don’t seem to care what they say online, there are also just as many that are hyper-aware of the fact that what they say online stays online forever. Those members of your community may be unwilling to talk about certain topics online, and live events are a great way to discover new things about them, and about all members of your online space. This is a key way that live events help improve your online community.

Live events are an excellent way to get people talking and you can help spark that conversation by asking attendees to share a few personal details on their nametags. If your community is based around an affinity for cars, for example, why not ask people to put their favorite make, model and year on their nametag? For food-centric communities, how about their favorite home-cooked meal? Even details like where you grew up, your favorite color, your astrological sign, or a pet peeve are interesting facts to find out about people, and all are conversation starters.

2. Making Connections

Think of an online community as a big summer BBQ. Your job as the host is to make sure everyone is having a great time, everyone knows where the bathroom and other important locations are, and that people aren't feeling left out or lonely because they have no one to talk to.

The party host is at the center of the action, just as a moderator is in an online community. If they're not paying attention to the community when things are happening, they may miss an opportunity to connect with someone.

Live events offer the chance to introduce community members to one another face-to-face. You have a great introduction point already in mind (since you think they'll get along for some reason or another), and it's often easier to say, "Hey, Lisa, meet Stephanie, you two both really like skiing and mentioned going to Colorado this coming winter" offline, than it is to make the same introduction within your community online.

Evernote is a great tool for keeping notes like this handy. Whenever an idea like that hits online, jot it down and save it for later. If the two members you want to introduce are at the next event you throw, make that introduction happen! If not, see if an opportunity arises to introduce them some other way, perhaps even within the community itself at a later time.

3. Solidifying Connections

Here’s the tricky one – bonding. Bonding can happen both offline and online, and it’s more an effect of communicating with people than an action you can do to help people connect. Live events are great tools to help your community solidify their online connections, bond a bit, and walk away feeling like they know a bit more about someone then they did at the start of the event. In many ways, introducing people who you think would get along and providing opportunities for members to discover common interests for themselves are the steps you can do to help them solidify their connections.

For example, I went on a cruise last year with a number of other people working in social media (mostly relative strangers), and now keep up with many both online and offline, even making a point to visit them if I'm in their area of the U.S. We bonded on that cruise ship.

As small of an act as it may seem, looking someone in the eyes and having a conversation adds a lot to a relationship.

Now What?

I challenge you to brainstorm ways that you can bring your online community together offline. Plan an event, even if it's a small one, and see how your community benefits. Watch how those members interact with each other before meeting in person and after.

See for yourself how live events can improve your online community.

Track iPad Sales in Real-Time [Apps]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 02:39 PM PDT

Apple announced that it sold 300,000 iPads on day one, but if you want to get a real-time update of iPad sales — to turn a marketing slogan — there’s a website for that! The Chitka advertising network has set up a page that attempts to estimate the number of iPads sold based on unique visits to its advertising network.

The company’s methodology, while not 100% accurate, effectively measures how many iPads have accessed the Internet.

Here’s what they do: Every unique iPad that comes through the Chitka ad network is counted. That number is then multiplied by how much of the Internet Chitka is seeing at any given time. The results are added in real-time to its webpage.

In addition to estimating the number of iPads sold, Chitka also calculates the location of these devices. So far, California is leading the pack with the most iPads — nearly 20% of all iPads online come from the Golden State.

At the time of this writing, Chitka reported that 285,000 iPads have been sold. Although that estimate is certainly less than the official numbers, it appears to accurately measure how many units are online.

As crazy as it may sound, there might be some people out there that aren’t using their iPads to surf the web. Who these people are, I don’t know — but there are apparently some of them.

Twitpics from Space Show Geomagnetic Aurora [PICS]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 02:18 PM PDT

Known to many as the most prolific Twitter user aboard the International Space Station, astronaut Soichi Noguchi has graced the Internet with a few more gorgeous Twitpics of our planet — including a vivid aurora created by a geomagnetic storm.

The Japanese aeronautical engineer, who we first told you about back in February, has been snapping pics of various coastlines, launch sites, the moon, stars and a spacecraft docking on the station. He typically posts a few pics each day from his mobile to Twitter via Twitpic.

Noguchi flew to the ISS on December 20, 2009, and he’s scheduled to return in June 2010. He joined Twitter about six weeks before he went into orbit. During this time, he has published 1,000 tweets and accumulated around 174,000 followers. He and his fellow crewmates have taken more than 100,000 photos aboard the ISS.

To send Noguchi a message of support, use this form on his website or simply hit him up with an @reply on Twitter.

Fly through Aurora at 28,000kmh. Happy 1,000 tweets :-)

“17th moon set. Tachi-machi Duki in Japanese.”

“Italy big view.”

“Stars ‘fall’ in love with Aurora in April. Priceless!”

“The Green Rose of Cairo. Egypt.”

“Twentieth moon tonight. Fuke-machi-zuki in Japanese.”

Clicker Aggregates iPad-Compatible Videos

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 01:43 PM PDT

If our roundup of the 10 best sites for watching video on your iPad left you wanting more, web video aggregator Clicker.com has just released the iPad version of its site, offering fast access to all iPad-compatible video on the web.

Anyone on an iPad can visit Clicker.com via Safari to access the iPad-friendly site. Once there, you’ll find an impressive collection of videos of all varieties that you can watch on your iPad — no flash required.

Clicker sorts videos by category so that you can browse through TV, web originals, movies, music and trends. The homepage also highlights popular shows and trending episodes to give users insight into what everyone else is watching. You can even create an account or log in via Facebook Connect to save videos to a playlist.

To be clear, Clicker isn’t a video site, it’s merely an aggregator that connects you to video for your iPad by displaying viewing options for each available video. It is, however, designed to answer the question all of us new iPad owners want to know: Can I watch this on my iPad?

Clicker isn’t the perfect solution for video on your iPad — certain highlighted shows are only available to Netflix subscribers (so don’t get too excited about 30 Rock yet) — but it’s certainly a great place to start your quest for entertainment on your new device.

Once again, big thanks to all who tuned in to Free Music Monday! If you find something you like in this feature, please feel free to share it with your music-loving friends. You can always check out the latest edition of this feature — plus all past editions — on the Free Music Monday tag page, so be sure to tune in each week. We’ve also included the list of past Free Music Mondays at the end of this post in case you want to check out the back catalog.

Huge thanks to everyone who has submitted tracks. If you sent us something and we haven’t included it yet, stay tuned for a future Free Music Monday. Here is how to submit your music to FMM:

Attention artists/labels: there are new submission guidelines for Free Music Monday. Please pick one track you’re willing to give away to Mashable readers as a free download and either a) include it as an attachment in your email to barb+FMM AT mashable DOT com (25 MB file size limit, please) or b) include a link to a location where we can download the song (if you want to use “in exchange for email” or other specific widgets to offer the track to Mashable readers that’s totally fine).

If you’d like to also point us to more of your work online where we can stream and/or download it, please feel free — but you must complete either a or b to be considered for Free Music Monday. Due to overwhelming submission volume we are sadly unable to include each and every submission or even reply to every inquiry. If we haven’t posted your track yet, you are welcome to submit another new track at a reasonable and totally not pushy time interval. If we’ve already posted a track from your band or artist, we are unlikely to double up and post something else from you for some time — as much as we love all of you! This makes FMM more diverse and inclusive of new music. Thanks!

Obama Throws First Pitch of Nats 2010 Baseball Season [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 01:16 PM PDT

President Barack Obama has ushered in the 2010 baseball season for the Washington, DC Nationals, throwing the ceremonial first pitch at today’s game.

Sporting a red Nationals jacket, the president greeted players and military veterans before heading to the pitcher’s mound, where he threw on a Chicago White Sox cap in homage to his hometown team. Obama wound up and executed a wild — if presidential — toss that strayed high and to the left.

Last year, the Southpaw In Chief was mildly mocked for sporting “mom jeans” and, as some put it, a rather weak pitching style. This year, Obama was reported to have been practicing in the Rose Garden before the big game.

The tradition of presidents throwing the first pitch of a baseball season began exactly 100 years ago with William Taft, a baseball fan himself.

New HP Slate Demo Shows Off Camera and More [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 01:13 PM PDT

The HP Slate is the tablet Microsoft teased ever so briefly back at CES, and remains one of the few upcoming non-iPad tablets we know about that will run Windows 7. Earlier we saw HP touting the slate’s Flash support, and in a new demo video we see a few other jabs at features Apple’s iPad lacks.

Unfortunately it’s another short clip so we don’t get too much new information, but we do see an on-board SD slot, USB port, camera with video and videoconferencing support via Skype, and the ability to dock your slate and connect it to your TV. These features are all notably lacking from the iPad, and although HP has an uphill battle to wage against the overwhelming fervor accompanying Apple’s huge launch this weekend, it is a convenient “don’t forget there will be other tablet options” reminder.

Check out the video below, which also includes a look at the HP Slate’s rather slick user interface, and let us know what you think. What features would a tablet device need to upstage the iPad?

iReverse: One App, One Code Base, Seven Platforms

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 12:40 PM PDT

Developers are buzzing about a simple Reversi game that runs on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPad and a slew of other devices and operating systems.

What makes the app big news? “There isn’t a single line of code I had to change to get this app to run on all these different operating systems and devices,” said creator and Adobe product manager Christian Cantrell.

Multi-platform applications designed to run on a variety of operating systems, Internet browsers and mobile devices are typically a pain to code — so painful that it generally prevents game and app developers from releasing products on more than one platform at a time. For example, there are many more apps available for the iPhone than the Android because developers must rewrite significant portions of code to create functional apps for both platforms. It also doesn’t help that native apps for different operating systems are written in several different programming languages; iPhone developers have to work in Objective-C, while BlackBerry and Android developers must write their programs in Java.

In short, most apps are engineered to be mutually incompatible with multiple platforms. That’s why Cantrell’s iReverse is such a game-changer.

In this video, Cantrell shows the game running natively on Mac, Windows and Linux operating systems. He also demos the app on an iPod touch, a Droid and yes, an iPad. Finally, we see iReverse running in a Chrome web browser.

As he explains in the video, Cantrell used Flash Builder and ActionScript to create “platform-specific wrappers” for different devices without having to rewrite the app’s code base for each operating system. “It’s a little bit tricky, but I’m going to open-source the iReverse application so everyone can see the code.” Stay tuned to Cantrell’s blog for documentation and details.

Kevin Rose to Replace Jay Adelson as Digg CEO

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 11:16 AM PDT

There's a major shakeup to report at Digg today: Jay Adelson is stepping down as CEO, effective immediately. Adelson will be replaced by Kevin Rose, who founded the site back in 2004 and has to much extent remained the face of the company through his role as co-host of online video show Diggnation.

In a statement to be released shortly, Adelson says that "the entrepreneurial calling is strong, and I am ready to incubate some new business ideas over the next twelve months. As the economy exits a very deep recession, I believe that it is an excellent time for new companies to develop."

While we don't yet know what those ideas might be, the news comes in the midst of a major overhaul at Digg. I talked to Adelson in-depth about the new Digg last month, who described his company's plans to reinvent itself as an aggregator of what people are sharing around the web. Since then, the company has moved swiftly into mobile, unveiling both iPhone and Android apps in recent weeks.

Now, execution of the company's ambitious game plan falls squarely on Rose, who says of the shakeup that he is "excited to be taking on the role of Chairman and acting CEO, driving Digg forward on our promise to enable social curation of the world’s content and the conversation around it." Nonetheless, this news comes as a huge surprise given the timing.

We're hearing that the company held an all-hands morning moments ago to share the news with employees. More to come …

Jay Adelson Statement

Got some news. After five years, forty million users, and an amazing ride, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of Digg. With the new Digg getting ready to launch, Digg Ads doing well, our sales force growing, our hiring ramping, and the company maturing well beyond its startup phase, I feel that now is the right time.

The entrepreneurial calling is strong, and I am ready to incubate some new business ideas over the next twelve months. As the economy exits a very deep recession, I believe that it is an excellent time for new companies to develop. Of course, I will continue to serve as an adviser to Digg. In the interim, Kevin has agreed to step in as Chairman and CEO.

I’d like to thank Kevin, the Digg staff and the Digg community for their support, insight and, most of all, their loyalty in turning Digg
into the force that it is today.

Kevin Rose Statement

I want to be the first to thank Jay for the last five years of amazing work. You’ve been a great friend and mentor, we wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for you.

While I’ll miss working w/Jay day-to-day I am excited to be taking on the role of Chairman and acting CEO, driving Digg forward on our promise to enable social curation of the world’s content and the conversation around it. We’ve been super busy on the product side getting ready for the upcoming Digg redesign and delivering our mobile apps for the iPhone and Android.

Thank you very much for your on-going support of Digg, I’m truly excited about the next five years, big things coming!

Appcelerator Simplifies iPad App Development

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 11:07 AM PDT

Today Appcelerator launches Titanium Tablet, a platform designed to help developers create apps for the iPad. Titanium is a free, Apache 2 licensed, cross-platform toolkit that lets web developers use JavaScript, CSS, HTML and scripting languages like Ruby or Python to build native apps for the iPhone, Android and now the iPad.

Building on the Titanium Mobile product, Titanium Tablet lets developers access all of the iPad’s native features — including user interface elements — without requiring knowledge of Objective-C or Cocoa.

Check out this video for Titanium Mobile. Although it describes Appcelerator’s mobile app development platform, it underlines many of the same elements of the Titanium Tablet product:

The concept of melding JavaScript/CSS3/HTML5 with native application elements and API calls to create native apps is pretty cool. Although a number of different solutions for cross-platform app development for the iPhone exist, like Mono Touch, Titanium is unique in its support for the native UI elements, which — let’s face it — are often what make an iPhone app look and feel like an iPhone app.

I’m interested in giving Titanium Tablet a try to see if I can speed up my development time (my Objective-C is a little rusty).

What do you think about tools for making iPhone, iPad or Android development less language-reliant? Let us know.

Tiger Woods Press Conference at The Masters Streams Live [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 10:47 AM PDT

Tiger Woods is hosting his first news conference since returning to golf this afternoon at 2 p.m. ET, and CBS News and Ustream are teaming up to offer a live video feed of the event.

Tiger announced last month that he’d be returning to the sport and that The Masters at Augusta National would be his first stop, which is where today’s press conference takes place.

Last time Tiger hosted a press conference, he drew 683,000 online video viewers on Ustream. He did not take any questions from the press at that event, however.

If you’re hoping to watch the conference on your newly purchased iPad, you’re in for a small disappointment. While Ustream has announced plans to release an iPad app, it’s not live yet. You’ll have to settle for the iPhone version or just use your laptop or desktop computer instead.

We’ve embedded the video below so you can watch it here.

Update: We’ve added Livestream’s feed as well.

Interactive “Glee” Trailer Lets You Fan the Cast on Facebook [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 10:24 AM PDT

The trailer of popular TV sitcom Glee’s return to FOX on April 13 has been bouncing around the Internet for a while now. But if you haven’t watched it yet, now’s the time: FOX has put up what it calls “the Glee hypertrailer” that plugs into Facebook, YouTube and other social media outlets.

Start the video and you’ll see head shots of each of the cast members along the bottom. From there you can click on individual cast members to fan them on Facebook. Once the video is done playing, you can follow the links to FOX’s Glee website and the Glee YouTube channel.

Glee’s producers is also holding a video casting call on MySpace, so this is not the first social media promotion for the show.

The hypertrailer is powered by software made by Coincident.TV, the same company that helped produce the interactive Avatar trailer. The software suite was also used in a content-rich broadcast of The Hills.

The Facebook-integrated trailer is not embeddable — neither was the Avatar one. If that’s a limitation of the technology, it’s an unfortunate downside. You’ll have to head over to FOX to watch it, but we’ve embedded the regular Glee mid-season premiere trailer without all of the social media bells and whistles below.

Standard Trailer

Update: Coincident.TV did not, in fact, create the interactive Avatar trailer.

3 Ways to Destroy an iPad [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 09:50 AM PDT

Whether for marketing, science or sport, some individuals are more interested in destroying the iPad than in maintaining its luster or finding the perfect case for the device.

Case in point: The three videos embedded below. Each has a different purpose, but the end result remains the same. You better believe that there were iPads harmed in the making of these videos.

It’s either total blasphemy or just the cure for your iPad hate, but either way it’s hard not to be fascinated by each of these iPad obliterations. Apple iPad lovers, shield your eyes.

Will the iPad Blend?

The answer in short is “Yes.” Is there anything this Blendtec blender can’t destroy?

The iPad Stress Test

PCWorld tests out the iPad’s sturdiness through a series of strenuous tests. One takeaway — apparently you can use coffee for navigation purposes, though I wouldn’t try that at home.

Teens Show No Mercy

These unfortunate iPads found themselves in the hands of some angry teenagers. What ensues is somewhat heartbreaking for those of us who braved the lines on Saturday and now try our best to keep our screens free of fingerprint residue.

iPhone OS 4.0 Preview Coming on Thursday

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 09:46 AM PDT

Is Apple unveiling the iPhone 4.0 OS on Thursday? That’s what it looks like! Boy Genius Report has posted an invitation to an event that includes the tagline, “Get a sneak peek into the future of iPhone OS” with the shadow of the number four in the background.

Now that the iPad launch has passed with success, the time seems right to start discussing features in the next version of the iPhone OS. This will presumably run on both future iPhones and the new iPad.

Historically, Apple has released SDK information and details of its next major OS version each March. However, given the release of the iPad and the new information developers needed to prepare software for its launch, it would make sense to wait until after iPad’s release to start detailing iPhone 4.0 OS.

If Apple follows its past schedule, the SDK will be available to developers soon and the newest iPhone will be revealed at WWDC this June.

By the Numbers: Facebook vs The United States [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 09:05 AM PDT

Muhammad Saleem is a social media consultant and a top-ranked community member on multiple social news sites. Follow him on Twitter for more social media insights.

Facebook’s official company statistics outline the breakdown of the sites over 400 million active users. While the site points out about 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States, it doesn’t dive deeper into the U.S. numbers.

To find out more about the average American Facebook user and how he or she compares to the average American, we dug a little further. After crunching the numbers and comparing the data, this is what we found.

Click the Image for Full Size Version

Editor’s Note: The DC number is greater than 100% because of the disproportionate amount of people who technically reside elsewhere but live in DC, and it would include people in surrounding cities who claim to live in DC on their profiles.

Interview: Ben Folds Talks Chatroulette and Merton [VIDEO]

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 07:51 AM PDT

When Merton the Chatroulette Piano Guy burst on the scene last month, a considerable number of people believed him to be musician Ben Folds. Folds, in turn, started making like Merton at concerts, uploading his “Odes to Merton” to YouTube. Mashable recently sat down with Folds via Skype to talk about Merton, Chatroulette and whether he is, in fact, the man behind the hood.

Merton the Chatroulette Piano Guy garnered his fair share of fame from going on the video chat site and composing improvisational songs on his piano about the people he encountered there. Mashable recently spoke with the man, who prefers to remain anonymous, about his musical aspirations as well as striking resemblance to Ben Folds.

Many of you (including some Mashable staffers) remained unconvinced that Merton and Folds are not one-in-the-same. After Folds released his final “Ode to Merton” last week, we decided to contact the musician and get the lowdown on his foray into the infamous social site.

After speaking with Folds, I’m pretty much 100% sure that he and Merton are not the same person. Check out the interview below if you’re still not convinced, as well as our original interview with Merton himself.

5 Tips for Using LinkedIn to Find Star Employees

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 06:54 AM PDT

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

Successful business people are always looking for their next rock star employee. The question is where do you find them? The good news is that the latest LinkedIn stats – 60 million professional profiles spanning 200 countries – would indicate this is a good place to look.

Many of us already have a LinkedIn account, and if you don't, LinkedIn is free and easy to maneuver. The trick is incorporating some strategies (habits, if you will) into using LinkedIn.

Below are five easy things you can add to your LinkedIn strategy to give you greater exposure to top talent.

1. Build Connections

In the course of your daily business, you never know where your next sale is going to come from. The same can be true for recruiting. It's important to connect and build relationships with a variety of different people. For example, my LinkedIn profile has connections from prior jobs, clients, and local entrepreneurs I do business with. It's great when I can make introductions between people with varied needs.

2. Join Groups

In addition to being a part of groups for your personal and/or professional benefit, join a couple of groups that might help surface candidates. Let's say you’re always looking for sales professionals. There's a LinkedIn group – The Sales Association – that you might want to join as a way to connect with possible candidates. They have almost 20,000 members, are affiliated with a national association, and have a job posting system when you're ready to let people know about your next opening.

3. Engage with Questions and Answers

Once you start connecting with groups, look for opportunities to engage with people in discussions. Notice people who share your culture and enter into a conversation with them. I belong to a group called Social Media in Organizations. This group offers multiple channels to talk about workplace social media – discussions, webinars, articles, a book club, etc.

4. Get (and Read) LinkedIn Updates

This is a quick and easy way to recognize people for promotions, awards, and accomplishments. People will remember you. Since much of your LinkedIn profile is static, this is a way to regularly let people know what you're up to. I've seen some of my connections post in their status "Looking for a Senior Accountant. Got a lead? Let me know."

5. Embrace Mobile

Keeping up with all of the information available can be a daunting task. That's why I like the mobile version of LinkedIn for my phone. I can check updates while I'm waiting at appointments, so staying on top of the activity doesn't have to be a time-consuming chore. LinkedIn offers versions for the iPhone, BlackBerry, and Palm.

Over the years, LinkedIn has taken some hits for being nothing more than an online repository of names. But these days, more and more people are becoming reacquainted with it. Since most people have a presence on LinkedIn, it's an obvious place to keep tabs on what's happening in the marketplace. And as small business owners, you can easily leverage LinkedIn to find talent.

iPad Stats: More Than 300,000 Sold on First Day, 1 Million Apps Downloaded

Posted: 05 Apr 2010 06:11 AM PDT

Apple announced on Monday morning that it sold more than 300,000 iPads in the U.S. on the first day of sales, including “deliveries of pre-ordered iPads to customers, deliveries to channel partners and sales at Apple Retail Stores.”

Furthermore, iPad users downloaded more than one million apps from the App Store and 250,000 e-books from the iBookstore on the first day.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated that 600,000-700,000 units were sold over the weekend — his estimate, however, was too optimistic. The numbers are still fantastic, and we’re glad Apple checked the wild predictions floating on the web. Once the initial frenzy subsides and the 3G model hits the market, we’ll have a better idea of whether the iPad really is a game changer, as Steve Jobs suggests.
