Next iPhone’s Parts Caught on Video

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 03:14 AM PDT

Although officially still unannounced, the next generation iPhone just can’t stop showing up in public. This time, metal frames that seem to be a perfect fit for the earlier iPhone 4 leak have appeared in two videos posted on the blog iPhone Portugal.

According to the blog owners, the two identical frames weren’t “stolen or found;” they were “purchased in China” and then “delivered” to them.

It’s hard to verify the frames as authentic, as there’s no Apple logo on them. However, judging by the detailed closeups and the quality of craftsmanship, they seem real.

In the videos below, you can see the frames compared to an iPhone 3GS and the iPad.

World’s Biggest Supercomputing Superpowers [INFOGRAPHIC]

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 01:19 AM PDT

Which country has the most powerful supercomputers? If you trust the annual top 500 list, recently published at the International Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg, Germany, it’s the U.S., followed by China, Germany, United Kingdom and France.

The list is voluntary and thus doesn’t include classified supercomputers owned by governments, which means that the real list can be quite different, depending on your favorite conspiracy theory.

The fastest supercomputer in the world is Cray’s Jaguar, and it’s located at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility. It crunches 1.75 petaflop/s running the Linpack benchmark, a standard measurement for very, very fast computing. The second on the list is China’s new supercomputer Nebulae, with a Linpack performance of 1.271 petaflop/s. For comparison, Intel’s Core i7 980 XE has a theoretical peak performance of 107.55 gigaflop/s – many orders of magnitude slower.

You can now easily browse the top 500 supercomputers on the list via this handy, interactive infographic by BBC. Move the mouse over it to see the speed, name, location and the number of cores for individual supercomputers.

Loopt Star: A Digital Loyalty Card For Your iPhone

Posted: 31 May 2010 09:00 PM PDT

Location-based social service Loopt is launching a new mobile rewards game called Loopt Star. Loopt Star will let users check in to different locales to not only compete with friends (a la Foursquare and Gowalla), but to also earn rewards from retailers and organizations. Loopt Star is basically a virtual loyalty card with a built-in social game.

Using the free iPhone app (other platforms are being evaluated, but Loopt Star will be for the iPhone only at first), users can check in at participating organizations and earn rewards, points or discounts, based on a set of factors designated by the establishments. That means that rewards and reward amounts can be altered depending on time of day, day of the week and how frequently the person has checked in in the past.

While other location-based services like Foursquare have offered discounts and loyalty rewards to users based on where they check in and how often, the focus hasn’t been specifically on earning and offering rewards. With Loopt Star, that’s the focus.

What Is Loopt Star

Loopt Star does borrow a lot of its social game elements from Foursquare — there are badges, leaderboards and the ability to become the “Boss” of a location — however, it also differs significantly from the other location-based services already available.

  • Loopt Star is based entirely on Facebook Connect. Instead of having to build or import your social graph, Loopt Star simply uses Facebook. We think this is pretty brilliant because it lets users get started immediately. Users can then share their current location in real time with their Facebook friends and alert them about special Loopt Star offers via newsfeed.
  • Brands can customize campaigns based on location, the number of visits, how many people are in a group, time of day or day of the week.
  • Wi-Fi location technology is used to limit cheating.
  • Users can view “Nearby Rewards” in the app and also get updates of rewards for places they have been before or that their friends share with them.

Loopt has already signed more than 20 sponsors and will launch with several large companies including The Gap, Universal Records, Burger King, Starbucks and Stanford University. New brands will be rolled out each week in the application.

What rewards users get depends on the brand. For instance, if you visit The Gap twice, you’ll earn a 25% discount. Meanwhile, Burger King customers in New York City who want to “have it [their] way” three times will get a free coffee or soda alongside a qualifying sandwich.

Universal Music will be giving away MP3s to users who check in at certain bars and Starbucks will offer special badges and discounts for the most frequent customers, much like it does with Foursquare and Brightkite.

Simplicity = Smart

What we like best about Loopt Star is that it’s extremely simple. The app plugs into your Facebook social graph and then makes it easy to share location info and check in to places to earn points and rewards.

In a recent editorial post about why location hasn’t gone mainstream, Leah Betancourt argued that its value to advertisers was questionable. Loopt Star isn’t designed to be its own social network; Facebook and Twitter and other services can do that better. Instead, it can be a location guide and a virtual loyalty card. The coupons and the simplicity offer the user value, while the ability to set parameters around offers and to better target existing users offers businesses and advertisers value.

When I spoke with Loopt CEO and Founder Sam Altman about the new product, he stressed that even if Facebook does get into location on its own terms, that doesn’t cannibalize what Loopt Star is doing. On the contrary, it makes the overall service even more valuable as Facebook better integrates with location. If everything is coming in from the same stream and everything is based on the same social graph, Loopt Star can offer its sponsors and users a certain experience while still tying into the core Facebook ecosystem.

We think that’s extremely shrewd. We also think that giving advertisers and business owners more options and granular control over their campaigns will lead to more creative and expansive uses. We’ve been waiting for a location-based service to eschew the pretense of being a social network and instead embrace the advertising opportunities

A Competitive Space

Loopt was at the forefront of the location-based space, but despite having a diverse suite of mobile apps and support for lots of platforms, the service has taken a backseat as social gaming services Gowalla and Foursquare have moved to center stage.

With Loopt Star, Loopt is getting into the social gaming space but with a very clear purpose. From the offset, Loopt Star wants to offer value to users and offer value to advertisers. The value for advertisers is crucial because the companies that will end up leading this space are those that are most able to sell a cost-per-visit strategy to business owners and retailers.

To be sure, Foursquare and Gowalla have crazy momentum right now, with Foursquare reporting nearly 1 million checkins a day. However, this is a space that has yet to truly explode and there are still plenty of opportunities for other companies and services to get a shot at claiming some of this virtual (and physical) space.

By using Facebook as the basis for the Loopt Star social graph, we think that Loopt is on the right track to building a service that users will actively use. Now it will just be up to the company to secure the sponsorships and partnerships to ensure that the rewards are valuable.

What do you think of the idea behind Loopt Star? Let us know!

Death to “Piracy”: Should All Music Sharing Be Free? [VIDEO]

Posted: 31 May 2010 08:24 PM PDT

Music piracy. Both the issue and the term are hotly contested. When record labels talk about “piracy,” are they referring to actual, piratical acts of theft, or are they talking about natural, helpful sharing within a community?

And who says music sharing should be illegal, anyhow?

Free software activist Richard Stallman certainly wouldn’t say so. Stallman started the Free Software Foundation based on four principles.

  1. Information, such as computer software, should be freely accessible.
  2. The information should be free to modify.
  3. The information should be free to share with others.
  4. The information should be free to change and redistribute copies of the changed software.

While not all of these principles apply to music, he says, some of them should apply. And a lot of music fans musicians tend to agree with him. In many ways, the corporate side of the music industry’s attitude toward musical content mimics Microsoft’s or Adobe’s or Apple’s attitude toward software. This attitude often does nothing to help those who create or those who enjoy the content in question; it does everything to make money for the corporations who oversee licensing and purchase fees.

What’s your opinion: Do you ever download and share music files illegally? How about legally — do you find and share free music online? Do you think all music sharing should be free and legal, or do you think there’s still a case to be made for keeping “piracy” of tunes illegal?

You can check out our previous interview questions with Stallman in our archives.

Note: Stallman asked that we use Ogg Theora, an open format, for encoding this video. To download the original video, go to its Wikimedia page. This video is published under a Creative Commons-No Derivatives license.

Google Abandons Windows for Better Security

Posted: 31 May 2010 06:13 PM PDT

In the wake of the China attacks that resulted in Google’s public threat to leave China, the search giant is abandoning Windows due to concerns over security.

According to the Financial Times, the technology titan has been slowly phasing out the use of Windows internally since January, not long after it was assaulted by Chinese hackers. For example, new hires are no longer offered Windows PCs — the choices are now an Apple Mac computer or a PC loaded with Linux.

Google’s policies surrounding the internal use of Windows aren’t clear-cut, though. Some employees can still install Windows on their laptops, but not their desktop computers. However, Googlers need explicit permission from “quite senior levels” in order to keep using the Windows OS.

The move makes sense: Windows and Internet Explorer have been implicated as vectors in which hackers accessed personal accounts and confidential data from Google’s servers. And, of course, Microsoft is also one of Google’s primary competitors.

It’s important to note that later this year, Google is expected to release Chrome OS, the company’s web-centric operating system. However, the decision to leave Windows behind doesn’t seem to be motivated by the impending release of its experimental OS.

New “Scott Pilgrim” Trailer Premieres on Facebook

Posted: 31 May 2010 04:37 PM PDT

Universal Studios has just released the second trailer for Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World on its Facebook page. The trailer was originally going to premiere in front of the comedy, Get Him to the Greek, but the studio offered to release it online first if the film could get 100,000 Facebook fans.

Social networks like Facebook and Twitter are becoming increasingly integrated into promotional campaigns for feature films. For instance, Disney premiered the first trailer for Alice in Wonderland on Facebook and also used the social network to serve up exclusive character posters.

For the upcoming release of Toy Story 3, Disney/Pixar has gone all out, even creating faux-vintage toy commercials for YouTube.

Universal’s strategy with Scott Pilgrim is unique in that it asked users to become fans of the film before it launched the trailer. The director of the film, Edgar Wright, announced this incentive on his Twitter account.

You can check out the second trailer for the film below:

What do you think about how movie studios are using social networks to promote films and to build buzz? Let us know in the comments.

Facebook to Undergo Judiciary Committee Probe

Posted: 31 May 2010 02:55 PM PDT

Despite recent changes to its personal privacy settings interface, Facebook is still under fire for past privacy-related mistakes. This time, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee is getting involved.

In a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday, committee chair John Conyers (pictured right) wrote, “We would appreciate a detailed explanation of the information about Facebook users that your company has provided to third parties without the knowledge of the account holders — particularly in circumstances in which the users did not expressly opt for this kind of information sharing.”

The letter goes on to request an explanation of prior policies as well as details on how Facebook’s recent round of changes have altered these policies.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has come up in a negative light in Washington. About one month ago, Sentaor Charles Schumer asked the FTC to investigate Facebook’s newer features built around the Open Graph API. The FTC has been reviewing Facebook’s privacy policies and those of other social networks, as well.

And just last week, Facebook’s D.C. office staged a special briefing for Congress staffers to explain the company’s response to the general privacy-issues-induced outcry from advocacy groups and users. Apparently, the explanation given wasn’t satisfactory.

Conyers, a Michigan Democrat, hasn’t stated outright that Facebook will face a full-on investigation from the Judiciary Committee; however, this initial letter is a telling signal of Washington’s growing interest in the social network.

Do you think the House Committee will — or should — investigate how Facebook treats user data with regard to third-party sites? Do you think Facebook’s recent changes will get the company off the hook where the U.S. government is concerned?

Asus to Launch App Store for Netbooks

Posted: 31 May 2010 11:46 AM PDT

While Asus is making headlines in the tablet category, it’s also revamping its netbook offerings.

The company announced today that it will be opening an app store for netbooks later this year.

The store is reminiscent of the Intel AppUp Center. The Asus app store will be a destination for netbook owners to find netbook-specific or netbook-optimized software that will play nicely on smaller screens, and with the OSes and processors an Asus netbook might sport. The software will come preloaded on all the company’s Windows netbooks starting later this year.

In addition to highlighting netbook-friendly applications with an app store, the company is displaying its new 4G Eee PCs at trade show Computex. Asus will also soon be releasing its MeeGo Linux-running netbook in 2011.

This news comes to our attention just hours after Asus unveiled a line of three tablets at Computex, a gadget-focused trade show. This line includes 12- and 10-inch models as well as an e-reader.

While it’s cool to see the company presenting a solid slate of iPad competitors, it’s also good to know they’ll continue to support non-tablet devices. The iPad is making a dent in netbook sales, but this could just be a passing statistic rather than a trend that will culminate in the obsolescence of netbooks altogether.

What do you think: Will revamping netbook offerings revitalize the netbook market? Or are these devices doomed as the march of the tablets continues?

6 Websites for Remembering and Honoring Veterans

Posted: 31 May 2010 10:36 AM PDT

Memorial Day is being celebrated today across the U.S. This is a holiday we typically associate with barbeques and three-day weekends; however, the somber and nationally important reason we celebrate should be remembered, as well.

Here are a few websites that are showcasing the stories of veterans who have fought and died to preserve our freedom throughout America’s history. When sharing, don’t forget to tag your tweets #MemorialDay!

One of the pages getting shared around the tubes today is this collection of four amazing stories of wartime heroism, ranging from WWII and Vietnam to our present-day fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq. These stories, like most stories of those who fight and die for their country, are profoundly touching and will serve as an instant reminder of why we celebrate today.

If you need visual reminders — or if you have images you’d like to share — Flickr has a pool for veteran remembrances and war memorials. This group of more than 13,500 photos features pictures of veterans, cemeteries, statuary and other monuments, such as the Vietnam Memorial.

Over at WhiteHouse.gov, President Obama’s weekly YouTube address centers on honoring men and women who’ve given their lives for our country:

Also from Washington, PBS’ Memorial Day Concert with the National Symphony Orchestra was filmed yesterday and will be rebroadcast on many local PBS television stations today. On the concert’s page, you can find listings for your area. You can also read and submit eulogies, read stories from various wars and learn about the meaning and history of Memorial Day.

And speaking of history, History.com has an amazing Memorial Day collection of images, videos and interactive content around this holiday. From Civil War battles to the D-Day invasion of Normandy, History.com has a ton of information for anyone who wants to learn more about the lives, battles and stories of American soldiers.

Finally, the Library of Congress has a special page dedicated to veterans. The Veterans History Project “collects, preserves, and makes accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war,” according to the website. Its pages contain audio and video of personal memoirs from soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines, as well as images and personal correspondence. You can search for stories by conflict, by military branch, by gender, by whether the story is about a prisoner of war and more. You can also volunteer to interview others, be interviewed or donate a veteran’s collection through this site.

We at Mashable hope you’re all having a safe and happy Memorial Day as you honor the memory of our fallen troops.

WARNING: Facebook Clickjacking Attack Spreading Through ‘Likes’

Posted: 31 May 2010 09:29 AM PDT

A new clickjacking worm is spreading through Facebook via the ‘Like’ feature. The attack, which is said to have hit hundreds of thousands of users, uses a combination of social engineering and clickjacking exploit makes it appear as if a user has “liked” a link.

The messages that are being used in the link text include, “LOL This girl gets OWNED after a POLICE OFFICER reads her STATUS MESSAGE,” “This man takes a picture of himself EVERYDAY for 8 YEARS!!,” “The Prom Dress That Got This Girl Suspended From School” and “This Girl Has An Interesting Way Of Eating A Banana, Check It Out!”

When a user clicks on the text that appears to be “liked” he is taken to a blank page that just has the text, “Click here to continue.” Clicking anywhere on that page will then publish the same message to that users Facebook page.

This vector is extremely similar to the Fbhole worm that spread across Facebook ten days ago. Because users unwittingly end up recommending the offending page to their social graph, this is the type of worm that can spread extremely quickly.

Security firm Sophos has identified the linked pages as being infected with the Troj/iframe-ET worm. It doesn’t appear as if the worm does anything other than add likes to your feed, but if you’ve been infected, you’ll still want to take action.

Sophos recommends deleting any entries in your news feed related to the links and check your profile and info pages to make sure that no links or pages related to those sites have been added to your profile.

As usual, huge thanks to all who tuned in to Free Music Monday! If you find something you like in this feature, please feel free to share it with your music-loving friends. You can always check out the latest edition of this feature, plus all the past editions, on the Free Music Monday tag page, so be sure to tune in each week. We’ve also included the list of past Free Music Mondays at the end of this post in case you want to check out the back catalog.

Huge thanks to everyone who has submitted tracks. If you sent us something and we haven’t included it yet, stay tuned for a future Free Music Monday. Here is how to submit your music to FMM:

Attention artists/labels: there are new submission guidelines for Free Music Monday. Please pick one track you’re willing to give away to Mashable readers as a free download and either a) include it as an attachment in your email to barb+FMM AT mashable DOT com (25 MB file size limit, please) or b) include a link to a location where we can download the song (use temporary file sharing sites like zshare at your own risk, because we may not get a chance to audition your track before the links expire). If you want to use “in exchange for email” or other specific widgets to offer the track to Mashable readers that’s totally fine — just send us or point us to the embed code. Please also include any relevant information about the artist (or link to their bio) plus their Twitter account, if they have one.

If you’d like to also point us to more of the submitted artist’s work online where we can stream and/or download it, please feel free — but you must complete either a or b to be considered for Free Music Monday. Due to overwhelming submission volume we are sadly unable to include each and every submission or even reply to every inquiry. If we haven’t posted your track yet, you are welcome to submit another new track at a reasonable and totally not pushy time interval. If we’ve already posted a track from your band or artist, we are unlikely to double up and post something else from you for some time — as much as we love all of you! This makes FMM more diverse and inclusive of new music. Thanks!

Will You Quit Facebook Today? [POLL]

Posted: 31 May 2010 07:22 AM PDT

Today is a day of reckoning for potentially millions of Facebook users — it’s Quit Facebook Day. The formal Facebook revolt was announced about two weeks ago amidst the growing debate over how Facebook uses and protects its users’ private information.

So far, just over 27,000 users have “committed to quit” Facebook, a figure that is statistically insignificant when compared with Facebook’s more than 400 million users. In response to the growing outcry over privacy concerns, Facebook made extensive updates to user privacy controls last week. But is this enough for the Howard Beales of the world?

When we last asked Mashable readers about their reasons for planning to quit Facebook, there was almost an equal split between users who claimed that they didn’t trust Facebook with their personal information and with users who said they had no intention of leaving the social network.

Now that the new Facebook privacy controls have been announced (and are slowly being rolled out), we figured we would ask again. Will you participate in Quit Facebook Day?

Let us know by voting in our poll and then expand on your answer in the comments.

Apple Sold Two Million iPads in Two Months

Posted: 31 May 2010 05:51 AM PDT

Apple is selling one million iPads every month. On Friday, April 30 (28 days after the device's release), Apple sold its one millionth iPad; exactly one month later the company announced it has sold two million iPads.

“Customers around the world are experiencing the magic of iPad, and seem to be loving it as much as we do,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, warning about the possible shortages of the much-coveted device. “We appreciate their patience, and are working hard to build enough iPads for everyone,” he said.

The iPad recently became available internationally, and Apple plans to start selling it in nine more countries in July and additional countries later this year. If the iPad continues to sell this well, it may surpass even the most optimistic forecasts.

Asus and MSI Unveil an Onslaught of Tablets

Posted: 31 May 2010 05:43 AM PDT

It’s tablet day at information technology show Computex. Asus has unleashed two tablets and an e-reader upon the world, while MSI has launched its own tablet named the WindPad.

The 12-inch Eee Pad Ep121 is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Microsoft’s Windows 7 operating system. Just like the iPad, it sports a virtual keyboard, but it can also be connected to a physical keyboard. Its primary uses, according to Asus, are web browsing, multimedia viewing and e-book reading. Its battery should hold for 10 hours of continuous use.

The smaller 10-inch Eee Pad EP101TC is based on Windows Embedded Compact 7 OS, Microsoft’s successor to Windows CE, but the exact specs haven’t yet been revealed by Asus.

Finally, there’s the Eee Tablet. The naming of these three products will surely cause some confusion amongst users, since the device named “Tablet” is actually an e-reader. Besides e-reading, it’s designed for notetaking, which you can do only with the included stylus. It sports a greyscale, TFT-LCD touchscreen with 1024×758 resolution and 2450 dpi input resolution, which should make it one of the most accurate digital note taking devices around. It also has a MicroSD memory card slot, a 2-megapixel camera and a 10-hour battery life.

At the same time, MSI launched the WindPad 110, a 10-inch tablet that runs Windows 7 and is powered by a 1.66GHz Intel Atom Z530 processor. It has 2GB of RAM and 32 GB of SSD storage. The version is expected to have two USB ports, an HDMI and a webcam. The screen is a 1024×600-resolution capacitive display, and MSI added its own Wind Touch UI on top of Windows 7.

How do you think these new devices will fare against their most obvious competitors, the iPad and the Kindle? Please share your thoughts in the comments.
