EXCLUSIVE: Vocus Acquires HARO to Expand Journalist-Driven PR Service

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 06:15 AM PDT

Today Software-as-a-Service company Vocus will announce the acquisition of Help a Reporter Out for an undisclosed sum, with the aim of furthering both companies’ missions of shifting control in the public relations cycle back to journalists. Founder Peter Shankman and his team will join the Maryland-based Vocus, a publicly-traded on-demand software company founded in 1992.

We wrote about HARO in a recent piece on journalists using social media for real results. Started as a Facebook group that outgrew its origins, the service connects reporters with reliable story sources in a way that is more journalist-friendly than more traditional methods of media relations in which reporters are inundated with widely-sprayed PR pitches. As a community of credible sources reporters can tap into, Vocus CMO Bill Wagner characterized HARO as being “in line with where social media is taking public relations. The old world of PR is changing and it’s not coming back.”

Wagner told us that the vision behind the acquisition is to “take HARO to the whole world of journalists” and that no changes were planned beyond continuing to grow HARO as an individual brand. The service will remain free, and will continue to offer its successful ad-supported daily newsletter that has an impressive 50-60% open rate. Founder Peter Shankman said his new role will be continuing to grow and build the HARO service, telling us, “I get to continue presenting my vision of social media and bring that to Vocus. It’s the best of all possible worlds.”

Representatives from both companies spoke to HARO’s ability to break down barriers and directly connect newsmakers with sources, essentially turning the process of traditional PR “on its ear.” Vocus, who acquired PRWeb in 2006 for its role in the democratization of newswire services, said they “saw HARO doing the same thing on the media side” according to Wagner. The synergy between both services aims to offer an alternative to hiring a PR firm, especially for small businesses that might find the cost of that approach prohibitive.

In addition to operating transaction-based PRWeb, Vocus also offers subscription-based on-demand software to help small businesses with online marketing. The company employs just shy of 500 people.

Flickr Makes it Easy to Share Photos on Facebook

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 05:13 AM PDT

Flickr has enabled a new way to share Flickr photos with your friends on Facebook: you can now connect your Flickr and Facebook accounts, and every time you upload a public photo or video, your Facebook account will be automatically updated as well.

To enable this feature, go to www.flickr.com/account?tab=extend and click “Connect”.

In case you’re worried about privacy, have in mind that only photos that have been uploaded as public (or later set as public) will be shared on Facebook.

If you already use the Flickr app on Facebook for sharing photos between these two services, you might want to turn it off and use this new feature instead, otherwise all your photos will be shared on Facebook twice.

Google Custom Homepages Go International; Here’s How You Turn Them Off

Posted: 10 Jun 2010 01:35 AM PDT

Last week, Google enabled an interesting feature: custom backgrounds for its search page. Now, the feature is available internationally, and to highlight it, Google collaborated with several well-known artists, who’ve created a gallery of background images, which will be featured on the Google homepage over the next 24 hours.

Unfortunately, the feature comes with a somewhat bizarre catch: you cannot turn the background images off – at least on certain Google search pages. For example, when I open my localized Google search page – www.google.hr – I’m greeted by a colorful field of flowers. I can change the image by clicking on the link in the lower left corner, but there’s no option to completely turn it off.

For many users, this is quite annoying; as you can see from this Twitter search, hundreds of users are trying to find a way to get rid of the feature and restore Google’s traditional, white background.

There are a couple of tricks to get rid of the image; for example, you can try clicking on this link, or you can use Google SSL, which is currently in beta, but works pretty much the same as regular Google. You can also choose the color white as the background, available from Google’s editorial choice of images. Most importantly, Google’s backgrounds will be rotated only today, after which (we hope) all will be restored to normal, and users will be able to set a custom homepage only if they choose to.

iPhone App Turns a Night Out into a Social Game

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 06:51 PM PDT

Mashable's Spark of Genius series is made possible by Microsoft Bizspark. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.

Name: BarCards

Quick Pitch: BarCards is an iPhone app/real-life social game that lets you go on scavenger hunts at bars.

Genius Idea: The BarCards iPhone app turns a night out with friends — or random bar patrons up for a game — into a social experiment that tests how far people will go for a free drink.

BarCards is essentially a modern-day bar game where players take turns to complete scavenger hunt-like tasks. During a turn, a player is presented with a card and a time limit (as set at the beginning of the game) that challenges him or her to find someone or something that satisfies the specified criteria.

For example, one card reads, “Get a woman to sing ‘Baby Got Back’,” and another, “Yell out ‘Marco!’ and someone must yell out ‘Polo’.”

Users can mark cards to denote whether the task was completed successfully or not. The idea is that losers buy winners drinks — but of course everything is on the honor system, and those rules will need to be enforced by thirsty friends.

The app is offered for free as a Lite version with impossible-to-avoid advertisements before each card. There’s also an ad-free paid version [iTunes link] that costs 99 cents and comes with more cards.

If you and your friends are open to embarrassing yourselves for the sake of a fun night out, then BarCards won’t disappoint.

AT&T Security Breach Exposes 114,000 iPad 3G Customer E-mails [REPORT]

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 04:57 PM PDT

An apparent AT&T security breach has exposed the e-mail addresses of 114,000 iPad 3G subscribers, according to Gawker.

A group known as Goatse Security (yes, named after the Internet shock site) sent the media blog a list of 144,067 e-mail entries of iPad 3G customers. The list includes well-known government officials like White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and high-profile individuals such as Diane Sawyer of ABC News. They obtained it through a script on AT&T’s website that returned email addresses associated with ICC IDs, which are used to link SIM cards on mobile devices with specific subscribers.

Gawker emailed two individuals on the list and verified that their ICC IDs matched the ones in the documents Goatse Security sent to them.

Gawker says that Goatse Security contacted AT&T and the loophole was quickly closed, but the damage has already been done. Over 100,000 emails are in Gawker’s hands, and it’s unclear who else used the script before the security loophole was closed.

If the report is true, it’s yet another black eye for AT&T. While it’s unlikely the ICC IDs can be used to attack subscribers, the exposing of 114,000 iPad 3G customers is damage enough.

Google Merges Street View with User Photos

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 02:39 PM PDT

Google is now allowing you to overlay photos from other users into Street View, giving you a new way to experience places near and far.

With this new feature, you can view any available user-contributed photographs within the panorama of a Street View location. User photos first came to Street View more than a year ago, but this is the first time we’re seeing image and object recognition used to place this trove of content placed in a real-world context.

To try out the overlay, click “Photos” in the top right corner of a Street View screen. Street View will then show thumbnails of related photos placed over Google’s own Street View imagery. When you mouse over the thumbnail, you’ll see a preview of the corresponding photograph without navigating away from Street View. When you click on the photo, you’ll be directed to Google’s photo browser, where you can explore other user-generated images from that location.

This is a stunning, inspiring way to see different people, perspectives, seasons, events and even times of day at a given spot.

Check out this feature when used to view the Eiffel Tower (below), and then try it at a popular tourist attraction or someplace you’ve always wanted to visit. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Twitter Is So 10 Minutes Ago [Updated]

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 02:38 PM PDT

Twitter is a mix of fail whale "over capacity" messages and significantly delayed timelines this morning, with the microblogging service experiencing a host of technical issues that are frustrating users.

The timeline has been creeping further and further behind over the last hour or so –- as of 11:45 EST, the most recent tweets we're seeing are from 11 minutes ago.

This isn't an unprecedented problem at Twitter, and usually the timeline can be brought back up to speed fairly quickly (Update: Twitter now says they’re working on the issue).

We'll update here when we know more. Meanwhile, let us know "What's Happening?" in the comments!

Update [2:50PT]: After resolving site issues earlier this afternoon, problems have resurfaced on Twitter, with timeline delays and fail whales galore. Twitter says “We're experiencing a recurrence of this morning's networking issue. We're investigating.”

20 Resources for Displaying Twitter Updates

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 02:21 PM PDT

This series is supported by Ben & Jerry’s Joe, Ben & Jerry’s new line-up of Fair Trade and frozen iced coffee drinks. Learn more about it here.

Displaying your Twitter feed on your website is a wonderful way to show visitors real-time news and events. An attractive Twitter widget can encourage your website’s audience to follow you on Twitter, serving as an additional method for expanding your network. Furthermore, when designed right, a Twitter feed can improve the aesthetics of a website’s layout.

For your inspiration, here are 15 websites that have beautifully and creatively integrated their Twitter feeds, along with five resources on how you can display your own Twitter feed on your site.

Examples

That INDIE Dude – Freelance graphic and web designer, Alex Linebrink, integrates his most recent Twitter update as a main design element of his portfolio site, manifested as a speech bubble beside an illustration of himself.

Justin Delabar – A simple “About me” section followed by your most recent status update gives you the ability to let your audience find fresher, real-time things about yourself, as shown by this Twitter update website integration.

Koodoz Design – The three most recent tweets by this design agency are shown on the sidebar of their company blog.

Jeffrey Sarmiento – A well-composed Twitter sidebar widget can serve as a great design element, as illustrated by Jeffrey Sarmiento’s blog design.

Snailbird.com – Illustrator and Web Designer, Nikki Jeske, puts a high emphasis on her Twitter feed by placing it prominently at the top of her blog’s sidebar.

CSS-Tricks – This site’s curator, Chris Coyier, has his most recent Twitter update located at the bottom of all web pages as a speech bubble emanating from a headshot photo of himself.

Sower of Seeds – The Twitter status widget of Sower of Seeds bisects the featured content and subsequent content.

Gary Nock – Musician Gary Nock keeps his fans up to date with his activities and whereabouts by displaying his top five most recent tweets on the sidebar of his blog. His updates include his tour schedule, so it also serves as a mini-calendar at times.

the Good Little Company – This Twitter status integration maintains the design’s theme: a piece of paper sticking out of the main content area.

Bert Timmermans – A compact and beautifully designed Twitter status widget sits at the footer of Bert Timmermans’ portfolio site.

Jay Hafling – This Twitter status integration operates as part of the design theme and is situated prominently at the top of the web layout.

Istok Pavlovic – Site Owner Istok Pavlovic’s most recent tweet embodies the site’s watercolor/painted design theme.

Douglas Menezes – A simple and unique compartmentalized design makes this Twitter status integration unobtrusive and functional.

Hey Josh – A piece of notebook paper houses the three most recent tweets by the site owner, providing the Twitter component a unique and creative design.

Web is Love – An illustrated bird positioned at the right of the most recent status update alludes to Twitter’s logo and also retains the site’s hand-sketched design theme.

Keynote Presentation by

R.E. Turner, Chairman, Turner Enterprises

Ted Turner is the Chairman of Turner Enterprises, Inc. and former Vice Chairman of Time Warner Inc., the world’s leading media company. He is the founder of CNN, an environmentalist and a philanthropist. Turner created the UN Foundation in 1998 with his historic gift in support of the United Nations. He has said that his gift is an “investment in the future of humanity.”

Special Thanks to The UN Foundation

The UN Foundation, a public charity, was created in 1998 with entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner's historic $1 billion gift to support UN causes and activities. We are an advocate for the UN and a platform for connecting people, ideas and resources to help the United Nations solve global problems.

We help the UN take its best work and ideas to scale through advocacy, partnerships, constituency building and fundraising:

  • Partnerships because we have learned what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together through the United Nations;
  • Advocacy because we know the leverage and impact that sound policy can have on the kind of social, economic and environmental change the UN seeks;
  • Community-building because the UN was created for "we the people," and all of us can give back and contribute to a better world;
  • We need new and additional resources to power solutions to global challenges.

Microsoft Office Challenges Google Docs with New Web Apps

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 01:42 PM PDT

In a move that seems like a challenge to Google’s suite of web-based office tools, Microsoft is opening some of its Office programs — including PowerPoint, Word and Excel — to the web.

Office Web Apps will allow for online document creation, editing, collaboration and storage using Windows Live. Documents created in Office 2010 can be stored directly to the cloud, as well.

Users will have to download the desktop version of Office 2010 in order to try Office Web Apps. We’re unsure whether Office Web Apps will allow users to import their Google Docs; if not, that might be a stumbling block for otherwise eager adopters.

Here’s a preview of what the new apps will look like:

Office Web Apps will also be available as a SaaS solution for businesses. Companies running Office 2010 through a volume licensing program will be able to use Office Web Apps on a server running Microsoft SharePoint 2010.

Clearly, all of these features and benefits parallel the Google Docs suite of applications. Google has the advantages of longevity and agnosticism — you don’t have to run any desktop software and Google Docs is plug-and-play — and Google Docs is already integrated into many of our online lives via a Google account.

It will be interesting to see how this battle plays out in the enterprise, where legacy and relationships are all-important. Will larger organizations, from corporations to municipalities to educational institutions, be willing to part ways with their current Google Apps installations? Will they be more likely to head for the cloud — some for the first time — with a MS Office-branded product?

If not, Microsoft’s bid for businesses’ cloud-based office software needs may be too little, too late. What’s your opinion?

BP and Twitter to @BPGlobalPR: Tell Them You’re Joking

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 01:24 PM PDT

Correction: We quoted the NYT as saying the @BPGlobalPR account had more than 150,000 followers. “Leroy Stick” contacted us and says that this is incorrect. The account never had that many followers, “but I predict we will be the end of the day,” Stick says.

In response to a request from Twitter and BP to clarify that it is, in fact, a parody, the Twitter account @BPGlobalPR altered its bio this week. Luckily, the fix only added to the hilarity of the profile.

According to The New York Times, Twitter contacted @BPGlobalPR on Tuesday to remedy the identity issue (@BPGlobalPR is a parody account created by an anonymous user in response to the massive oil spill off the Gulf of Mexico). The twitterer in question poses as a clueless BP PR person, offering scathing commentary about the manner in which the spill has been dealt with. And, it seems, this week BP had had enough with the charade.

"BP requested that the account holder be asked to comply with Twitter's guidelines regarding parody," read a statement from Twitter issued today. "Twitter subsequently provided suggestions of best practices that are found on our parody policy page."

Before today, the bio expressed the account’s wish to "get BP's message and mission statement out into the twitterverse!" Now, it reads: “We are not associated with Beyond Petroleum, the company that has been destroying the Gulf of Mexico for 51 days.”

Prior to the change, the account holder — who used to purport to be a BP PR man named “Terry” and now goes by “Leroy Stick” — kept up the act, tweeting in confusion:

We’re not sure what effect this fix will have on the account’s fanbase, which has more than doubled since we interviewed the creator via e-mail a few weeks ago. We’re guessing that most people already knew that the account was a spoof, but the NYT reported at 1:37 p.m. that the account had “more than 150,000 followers,” and now it has 144,904 — so maybe some people were confused.

What do you think of the switch, and the concept of parody accounts in general? Have you ever been fooled by a handle such as @BPGlobalPR?

Bravo Testing Foursquare Badge Rewards with Sephora

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 01:11 PM PDT

Foursquare Co-Founder Dennis Crowley spoke about experimenting with badge rewards yesterday at the Mashable Media Summit, and today we learned that Bravo TV is one of the first big brands to test the idea with its Foursquare followers.

The NBC-owned cable network has partnered with cosmetics retailer Sephora to reward Foursquare users who unlock the Bravo Real Housewives badge with $100 Sephora gift cards at select stores in New Jersey and New York over the next four weeks.

The first person to see the promotion (via Bravo’s or Sephora’s tweet), show up at the specified store and show their Real Housewives badge to the manager will win the gift card. The badge reward initiative kicked off yesterday, and already both companies are excited by the online and offline activity that has been generated.

We spoke with Ellen Stone, Bravo TV’s senior vice president of marketing, about the Bravo badge reward at Sephora. She says the idea is to give fans of the Real Housewives series their own Housewives moment.

Stone hopes the badge rewards will further their Foursquare success, saying that it was a calculated move on their part to partner with another company who could also benefit from Bravo’s Foursquare presence. The decision to work with Sephora made sense because “they have a very Bravo-like clientele; engaged, upscale and urban.”

Stone also raved about the company’s ongoing relationship with Foursquare, claiming that “it’s been an amazing partnership with Dennis [Crowley] and Tristan [Walker].”

Moving forward we can expect to see more of these Bravo badge rewards with other partners should the initiative prove successful.

Setting the Record Straight on Google, AdMob and Apple’s TOS

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 01:06 PM PDT

The Social Analyst is a weekly column by Mashable Co-Editor Ben Parr, where he digs into social media trends and how they are affecting companies in the space.

The tensions between Apple and Google are on the rise after Apple made changes this week to its iOS developer agreement that purportedly ban Google and the recently acquired AdMob from the iPhone and iPad. But is Apple really preventing its biggest competitor from advertising on its popular OS?

AllThingsD’s Peter Kafka broke the news about Apple’s revised mobile ad policies, yesterday. He and others interpreted the changes as limiting Google AdMob from advertising in iPhone and iPad apps, and in fact, AdMob has lashed out at Apple over the changes.

However, we’re not convinced that Apple will actually bar Google or AdMob from advertising on its products. While the technology titan might love the idea of banning Google, it’s very unlikely to pull the trigger.

The following is an explanation of what’s going on, and two potential paths Apple could take in its quest to defeat Google on its own turf.

Apple’s Developer Agreement: The New Version

In order to understand what’s going on, it’s important to understand what’s changed. The following is the full, revised language from section 3.3.9 of the agreement. I’ve bolded key sections for emphasis:

3.3.9 You and Your Applications may not collect, use, or disclose to any third party, user or device data without prior user consent, and then only under the following conditions:

– The collection, use or disclosure is necessary in order to provide a service or function that is directly relevant to the use of the Application. For example, without Apple's prior written consent, You may not use third party analytics software in Your Application to collect and send device data to a third party for aggregation, processing, or analysis.

– The collection, use or disclosure is for the purpose of serving advertising to Your Application; is provided to an independent advertising service provider whose primary business is serving mobile ads (for example, an advertising service provider owned by or affiliated with a developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple would not qualify as independent); and the disclosure is limited to UDID, user location data, and other data specifically designated by Apple as available for advertising purposes.”

It’s shorter and crisper than the old version of section 3.3.9, which targeted companies such as Flurry from gathering detailed analytics through apps.

Scenario One: Apple Bans AdMob

Scenario one is what the blogosphere is buzzing about. The developer agreement explicitly says that developers cannot “collect, use, or disclose to any third party, user or device data without prior user consent.” and that even then, it can only be “provided to an independent advertising service provider whose primary business is serving mobile ads.” Apple even explains that a third party owned by a company that is a “developer or distributor of mobile devices, mobile operating systems or development environments other than Apple” wouldn’t qualify.

To many, that screams AdMob, now a subsidiary of Google. And at face value, that interpretation seems sound. What will happen, though, when iPhone app developers almost certainly test their luck and include AdMob ads in their apps? Will Apple cite section 3.3.9 and ban the app from the app store until it removed AdMob?

It’s possible, but we bet that the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and/or the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) would immediately get involved. The FTC is already investigating Apple over its recent activity in the mobile advertising space. The FTC even cited Apple as a key reason the AdMob deal was approved.

Mark my words: if Apple outright bans AdMob from advertising in iPhone apps, it would not sit well with the FTC, and they would be knocking on Apple’s door.

The More Likely Scenario

Last week at the D8 Conference, Steve Jobs answered an audience member’s question about whether Apple intended to ban rival advertising platforms from iOS devices. His response: “We’re not banning other advertisers from our platforms.”

Apple made changes to its developer agreement in April not because of the threat AdMob or other advertising platforms posed, but to thwart analytics firms from selling sensitive user data, such as device data and geolocation info, to third parties. He specifically cited Flurry Analytics as making him “go through the roof” — they published a report in January in which they detected about 50 iPads on Apple’s campus before the iPad was even announced.

We don’t think Steve Jobs has changed his mind on rival ad platforms in just one week. An outright ban would bring the wrath of the FTC, and Apple certainly doesn’t want a full-blown FTC investigation.

However, the new language gives Apple more flexibility and control over what analytics firms and mobile advertisers can collect, and this may be what the company is really after. If Apple can make things more difficult for Google and AdMob on the iPhone platform, it provides a subtle advantage to iAds. Apple can cite “protecting user privacy” as it approves or denies certain information from being sent to Google and its advertising machine.

Apple is all about control, and the updated language to its developer agreement gives it more flexibility to deal with more situations. By having the ability to deal with mobile advertisers on a case-by-case basis, Apple can effectively control what comes in and out of its iOS ecosystem while walking the tightrope between the FTC and monopoly.

We expect many of these issues to be clarified as iPhone and iPad app developers submit their AdMob-enabled apps to the iOS marketplace. We’ll be keeping a close eye on what happens next.

“FarmVille” + “Oregon Trail” = “FrontierVille”

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 12:40 PM PDT

Game maker Zynga just launched a new game called FrontierVille. Think FarmVille meets Oregon Trail and you’ll get the idea.

The game is already playable on Facebook today, and it adds some features that FarmVille doesn’t have. You can control multiple avatars (a whole family of settlers, just like in Oregon Trail) on the same screen at the same time. Picking a spouse and raising children is an important part of the game play.

You start out with “a wagon and a plot of land,” according to Zynga. From there you can work your way up to a beautiful, self-sufficient home. Along the way you’ll encounter wildlife and dynamically-changing plant life and weather. As with FarmVille, growing crops is a big part of your task, but you’ll also have to worry about your reputation and relationships with other settlers in the burgeoning frontier community.

Zynga is now worth $4 billion thanks to games like this one, FarmVille, Mafia Wars, FishVille and Treasure Isle. People love to kill time at work, don’t they?

Facebook Expands Its Reach with Address Book Import

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 12:06 PM PDT

Facebook now allows users to bulk import their e-mail address books so that they can invite non-Facebook friends to join in Facebook games and apps, including people who may not even have a Facebook account.

Facebook’s growth over the past couple years has been phenomenal; perhaps this new move will help the company maintain that trajectory by increasing the number of invitations to the network.

According to Facebook, these changes to the multi-friend selector for app invitations “make it easier for users to invite friends who don’t have a Facebook account. The multi-friend selector already enables users to invite friends using their email address. This [feature] adds a page to the end of the flow and removes friction from the process by allowing users to invite contacts from their address book.”

Previously, users had the option to manually enter e-mail addresses for non-Facebook friends; however, this new feature eliminates the need to search through your e-mail client to find the address you need. The importer also recognizes which e-mail addresses belong to your current Facebook friends, so the imported contacts list won’t contain many redundancies.

You’ll be able to import contacts from a web mail client (such as Gmail or Yahoo Mail), from a program such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or Apple Mail. You can import files (such as VCF or CSV files) for other types of contacts, too.

We tested out this feature for an event invite, and here’s the flow we saw:

After that process, we were able to select non-Facebook friends and invite them from a list with check boxes.

Will this personally make it easier for you to manage your events, play your games and stay connected? Will it also help Facebook extend its reach into the inboxes of non-users and keep up it breakneck pace of growth?

Bing Adds Facebook Updates and Links to Search Results

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 11:12 AM PDT

Facebook search will go live later today at bing.com/social and will include the full Facebook firehose complete with non-Pages content.

Microsoft’s search engine will combine both Facebook and Twitter results into one search experience. Results will include Facebook Page updates, as well as popular shared links from Facebook in aggregate form.

Bing promises that the Facebook links that surface in search results are based on Facebook updates that are shared with “everyone.” The company is even going so far as to share only the link content, so Facebook users’ names and photos won’t be revealed.

The blog post on the news explains how the search engine handles links with this example (as seen above): “Searching for ‘World Cup’ will show what links Facebook users are sharing on the topic – with a caption that is extracted from the original article shown below the link.”

Bing will also be updating the homepage to surface trending topics based on Twitter and Facebook data.

What do you think of the new search features?

How Political Campaigns Are Using Social Media for Real Results

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 11:02 AM PDT

The Real Results series is supported by Gist, an online service that helps you build stronger relationships. By connecting your inbox to the web, you get business-critical information about key people and companies. See how it works here.

Social Media Politics ImageJust as social media has opened a dialogue between businesses and consumers, its value is apparent to those in political office, whose work and very professional survival hinges on the needs and perceptions of their constituents.

But when was the last time a local politician garnered the same social media buzz as a hip startup, or a savvy online retailer?

As it stands, the social web is ripe with opportunities for candidates and office holders alike to connect with voters, foster transparency, and even spar with opponents in the same ways they have been in the traditional media for hundreds of years. We spoke with some innovators who have been tapping into the political power of social media. If their work is any indication, expect the future of elected government to be measured in fans and followers, as well as votes.

Transparency and Credibility

Justin Amash Facebook

Spin and misinterpretation can cloud a political message as it passes from candidate, to spokesperson, to media, to public. But this chain can be broken by something as simple as a Facebook update.

“I first began posting every vote from the floor of the Michigan House of Representatives in June 2009 — six months after taking office,” said Republican State Rep. Justin Amash in an e-mail interview. “It was really a spontaneous undertaking. I figured, why not post my votes, too, with some explanations? … I instantly received comments from dozens of people who wanted me to know how much they appreciated what I was doing. It became clear to me that posting my votes in real-time on Facebook could revolutionize the process of legislating.”

Rep. Amash is among the first legislators to post all of his votes on his Facebook Fan Page. He has received significant media attention for his open social policies, and has since announced his candidacy for U.S. Congress on Facebook.

“I wasn't considering a run for Congress or any other seat when I began posting my votes, but Facebook has turned into a fantastic campaigning tool,” said Amash. “Above all, it has helped me to gain credibility with voters. When I say that I’m a principled, consistent conservative, people know that it’s true. They can see it, and they can tell from our discussions that I’m actually reading the bills.”

Rep. Amash’s Facebook strategy seems to have bypassed some of the partisan choir preaching and flame warring that is rampant in the political blogosphere. “Because I’m willing to explain myself and account for my actions, I’ve gained Facebook fans from across the political spectrum. Some of my best interactions are with people who disagree with my votes. I’m trying to foster the kind of civil, rational discourse that has been missing from politics for a long time.”

One important element of Amash’s Facebook success is that he (and he alone, as he tells us) is the one posting, commenting, and replying. “In fact, as of now, no one else — not even my legislative staff or campaign staff — has access to it. Yes, it’s a lot of work, but it’s important that I hear directly from constituents and that they hear directly from me.”

Even a cursory scan of Amash’s Facebook Page reveals that this type of direct contact has engendered productive conversations, even about political minutiae and hyper-local issues — topics that can be glossed over as they filter through traditional media outlets.

Highly Targeted and Inexpensive Ads

As businesses have known for some time, the social web can be a cost-effective medium for targeted advertising. Whereas expensive television and print ads might blanket a wide swath of voters with uncertain viewership and impact, social media engagement costs pennies on the dollar, and can deliver highly targeted and measurable results if executed properly.

In 2008, Julielyn Gibbons, President of i3 Strategies, an online strategy consulting firm, and Senior Fellow at the New Organizing Institute in Washington, DC, helped an “unorganized, under-funded” group, defeat deep-pocketed opposition by relying on social media marketing to get messaging to constituents.

As part of a campaign to pass a ballot initiative in Michigan that year, Gibbons and her team established Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube presences, and invested heavily in Google and Facebook ads “that mirrored our traditional media advertising, with a twist. We focused heavily on micro-targeting by age and gender, going for the the ‘goosebump factor’ as I call it — giving the public something that was very personal that they could relate to and that would win over the scare tactics that the opposition was running.”

Gibbons notes the importance of a “cyclical message strategy” when digging into the nitty gritty of social media advertising. “Every outlet linked to or mentioned the other outlets. For instance, at the end of every YouTube video, we included the URL of the campaign website, the Facebook Page, the Twitter page. Tweets linked to YouTube videos, important updates on the Facebook Page, links to fundraising pages on the site, etc.”

The proposal ultimately passed by a very slim margin. “Afterward, pundits credited our heavy use of social media with organizing, mobilizing, fundraising and ultimately turning out voters in support of the measure,” said Gibbons.

Let the People Be Your Voice

While you can pay to market politics online, it’s arguably better to engage your network of supporters and let them spread the message for you. Their reach and trust value far outweigh anything you could broadcast or pay for.

Once you have their attention, little calls to action can go a long way.

“Some of the tactics that we used included asking supporters to change their Facebook profile picture and Twitter avatar to the campaign logo days before the election, posting and sharing campaign ads and messages on YouTube, encouraging supporters to share on their Facebook walls, [and] creating and spreading a hashtag when folks tweeted about the campaign,” said Gibbons.

And don’t discount e-mail marketing — it makes for great follow-up after some preliminary, non-invasive social engagement.

“When we sent an e-mail, we always gave supporters a quick list of actions that they could take, and we always let them know that they were a vital part of the campaign. For instance: ‘We’ve got a new ad on TV, have you seen it?’ Can you help us raise [additional funds] to keep it on air for another three days?’”

Again, Gibbons notes the importance of cyclical messaging. Every e-mail sent should offer proactive ways for supporters to connect back to the campaign’s social media sites.

Improving Public Service

“Ivory Tower Syndrome” is a problem in every sphere — including politics — where influence and money can divide those in office from the people they serve. Social media can democratize information and reconnect politicians to the vox populi.

“Our goal by using social media is to have an active conversation with our constituents,” said Nicole Russo, Legislative Aide to New York State Senator Kemp Hannon. “Sometimes we have to ask the hard questions and get real, truthful, and sometimes harsh answers. The more we know about what our constituents are thinking, the better we can serve them.”

While Senator Hannon is not actively campaigning at this time, Russo notes that Facebook is the ideal medium for this type of communication and discovery, and that the senator’s Facebook profile has become “almost a personal news outlet for both Senator Hannon, the community and the state. Whether a constituent is wondering what Hannon’s latest legislation is or what are the key issues of concern of the 6th Senatorial District of New York, constituents can read about it and freely give their opinion on his Facebook [profile].”

Calculated Political Strategies

While many political campaigns are fumbling to leverage social channels effectively, consulting firms have seized the opportunities that exist in these knowledge gaps, and have applied many business concepts to the model.

“Political campaigns aren’t much different than traditional marketing campaigns, with a few exceptions,” said Gibbons. “Whether you’re selling a product, an idea, or a candidate, you’re ultimately trying to convince the public to embrace something.”

To that end, political consultants leverage some aggressive strategies to keep a client’s social media presence at the top of mind.

“We always invest in getting a few of the opponents’ supporters to fan our page,” said Josh Koster, Managing Partner of Chong + Koster, a digital consulting firm that works on political campaigns. “Why not 100% supporters? Because by leaving just a few haters on the page (and thus ensuring massive back-and-forths in the comments threads) we ensure higher marks from Facebook’s Edge Rank algorithm.” He also notes the importance of keeping 99% of the Page’s discourse on your side to dominate the conversation, which may convince casual visitors of your point of view.

Koster also touts the value of e-mail marketing — something that is amplified by social media trust building.

“In an ideal world, we use social media to push out a steady drum-beat of ‘warm fuzzy’ content and use e-mail to drive the hard asks. The more value we build on social media, the more hard asks we get to make via e-mail,” he explained. “The trick is getting the social media universe and the e-mail universe to overlap.”

The Bottom Line

When it comes to politics, is social media a marketing tool? A conversation with constituents? An ear to the ground of civic responsibility? The versatility of these platforms means it can be any or all of these things, depending on the needs of a campaign or office.

Regardless of use, the importance of authenticity seems to be universal.

“You want the social media [component] to be a very natural, authentic extension of the campaign and candidate or issue,” said Gibbons. “If it’s forced, or faked, the public will know it and you’ll look worse than not trying it all.”

The importance of utilizing social channels can’t be understated. If you want to compete in today’s online political world, dedicate resources appropriately, and stick with it. “Do not leave your social media networking up to an intern,” said Russo. “Many organizations make a page and then forget to update or allow someone that is unqualified to update it for them. You really need someone who knows when and what to post in order to capture an audience that will benefit your organization.”

And while social mediums may come and go, the message (and how it’s disseminated) remains the most critical part of any campaign.

“The best way to garner votes and support is by maintaining transparency and communication with voters,” said Rep. Amash. “Most elected officials haven’t figured that out yet.”

Are We Too Complacent About Cloud Computing? [VIDEO]

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 10:52 AM PDT

Let’s have a little midweek reality check: Almost all of us have almost no control over our own computing.

And for most of us, that fact causes very little mental or emotional distress.

Sure, we might raise hell when a few blogs get contentious about Facebook privacy, and we might shake our heads when Google gets caught collecting user data from its Street View vehicles. But even when it comes to our business practices, very few of us know or care about what it really means to have control over our online activities, identities and data.

And why should we care? Letting others control our computing is inexpensive, convenient and mostly safe… right? Have a look at what Richard Stallman has to say. He started the Free Software Foundation, and he knows a thing or two about what users should be able to do with their own apps and programs.

As a refresher in Free Software 101, Stallman believes the following four tenets hold true for all software you’d need to use to perform everyday work:

  1. Information, such as computer software, should be freely accessible.
  2. The information should be free to modify.
  3. The information should be free to share with others.
  4. The information should be free to change and redistribute copies of the changed software.

Anything that doesn’t meet those four criteria is considered proprietary software. An example of free software would be The GIMP image editor or OpenOffice document editor. Proprietary software includes programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Word. We’ve talked in the past about how proprietary software robs users of control and freedom.

But another category of software we all know and use is software as a service (SaaS) — a web-based version of proprietary software that ships out all your data across the tubes and lets someone else do the computing for you. SaaS programs range in scope from banking software to e-mail apps, and they’re typically used more by small and medium-sized businesses.

When it comes to SaaS, Stallman considers these programs worse than proprietary software. They take away freedom (as defined above), and they require that you relinquish control of your data to “the cloud,” a nebulous entity that resides behind a big logo and deep inside an enormous and hypothetically secure data center. But are SaaS applications the best solution for businesses, where control over data and software modifications are even more important than to consumers?

In an essay on SaaS, Stallman writes, “The real meaning of ‘cloud computing’ is to suggest a devil-may-care approach towards your computing. It says, ‘Don’t ask questions, just trust every business without hesitation. Don’t worry about who controls your computing or who holds your data. Don’t check for a hook hidden inside our service before you swallow it.’ In other words, ‘Think like a sucker.’”

Check out what Stallman has to say in this video, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

You can check out the previous episodes from our chat with Stallman in our archives.

Note: Stallman asked that we use Ogg Theora, an open format, for encoding this video. To download the original video, go to its Wikimedia page. This video is published under a Creative Commons-No Derivatives license.

Google Pac-Man Logo Leads to Agonizing Customer Support Call [AUDIO]

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 08:52 AM PDT

Google probably thought it was doing the world a favor when it released its Pac-Man logo that doubled as a playable version of the game. But alas, web users are not as sophisticated as Google anticipated.

A legion of Firefox users were perplexed by the design decision and headed over to support to learn how they could fix the “problem.” Now we have possible audio evidence — in the form of a tech support call uploaded by YouTube user Mrcoolbrad — highlighting just how confusing this was for parts of the online population.

Poor Loranne is confused by the presence of the Pac-Man game and tells her customer support representative, “I have the Pac-Man game and I want to disable that on my homepage.”

In most cases we would never recommend that you laugh at your elders, but you have to admit the entire exchange is chuckle-inducing.

HOW TO: Follow the 2010 World Cup on Twitter

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 08:23 AM PDT

world cup ballThe 2010 World Cup is going to be a very interesting one as far as social media goes — it’s the first to be played out in the Twitter era and the first to fully embrace the social media universe.

This bodes well for avid soccer fans keen to stay up to date with all the most recent news from their favorite players and teams. The real-time nature of Twitter may well entice these newcomers to hop on the micro-blogging site. To get new users ready for the action, we’ve got a few tips for how to follow the World Cup on Twitter complete with a list of who you should be following to stay informed on the games, news, and goings on in South Africa.

1. Hashtags and Searches

hashtag twitter image

While Twitter’s hashtag system is a great way of monitoring a certain topic, and for getting real-time updates on what the Twitterverse is saying about a live event, the organic nature of exactly how the tags are decided can cause confusion.

Currently, there seems to be a fair amount of footie-related tags in circulation, although we’d imagine by the first few days of the tournament these will be narrowed down as the most popular ones become trending topics and are adopted by tweeters.

At the moment, #worldcup seems to be the largest tag by volume of tweets, but #wc2010 is also doing the rounds, as is #2010worldcup. Don’t forget, however, that the World Cup is a global event, so different languages also come into play. In Spanish, World Cup is “Copa Mundial,” in French it’s “Coupe du Monde,” and so on.

Other tags have, of course, sprung up around teams. #England is what most people are using to refer to the England team, while mentions of the United States team can be found under the tag #USMNT.

To quickly access a stream of tweets containing a certain hashtag you can save a search on Twitter, so that the results are just a click away from your home page — and the search can be easily removed after it’s no longer relevant.

2. Lists

world cup twitter list image

The World Cup only lasts for a month, so it’s unlikely you’ll want to permanently follow all the World Cup-related sources you’ll be getting your footie news from over the next four weeks, especially as many sources have been created solely for the event.

The quickest and easiest way to get a month’s worth of World Cup info is to follow a ready-made list. Mashable’s Twitter list directory has World Cup lists ready and waiting and there’s also a Top Tweets account direct from Twitter that algorithmically selects the “top tweets” about the World Cup. Simply follow the list and then you can unfollow it after the final.

Alternatively, if you’re just interested in the big headlines, rather than blow-by-blow coverage, TweetMeme’s World Cup 2010 aggregated feed of popular tweets might be of interest.

It’s more work, but if you’re a little more selective then you can create your own list and simply delete it after the tournament on July 11. To get you started we’ve made some suggestions of World Cup Twitter news resources that can be found below.

3. World Cup News Sources on Twitter

“Tourist Lane” Stunt Delights and Confuses New York City [VIDEO]

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 08:06 AM PDT

Yesterday, we revealed at the Mashable Media Summit that Improv Everywhere, along with "Self-Appointed City Planner" Jeff Greenspan, were behind that awesome “Tourist Lane” stunt here in New York City. Now, we’ve got a video depicting the hilarity said lane caused.

The "Tourist Lane" (a painted creation located on 5th Avenue and 22nd Street in NYC) spread across the web — from a single photo posted to a blogger’s Tumblr (with no prodding from Improv Everywhere founder Charlie Todd or Greenspan) to major media outlets.

As you can see in the video, it also caused much confusion and delight among tourists and native New Yorkers alike. Check out Improv Everywhere’s site for complete coverage of the prank. What other cities do you think could use a tourist lane?

HOW (NOT) TO: Annoy People on Twitter

Posted: 09 Jun 2010 08:05 AM PDT

There’s no denying that Twitter’s usefulness is growing — from journalists looking for leads to actors putting on productions of Romeo & Juliet, everyone seems to be getting wise to the microblogging site’s potential.

Still, sometimes the urge to shout one’s barbaric yawp over the roofs of the world can overshadow a little something we call “foresight,” leading to the dreaded and ever-so-annoying overshare.

In its most extreme form, the overshare can lead to, well, police involvement (tweeting about your desire to blow up an airport is probably not recommended).

Still, cops and whatnot aside, tweeting with glorious abandon can, ultimately, alienate and annoy your followers. That’s the topic of my most recent CNN column, which I co-author with fellow Stuff Hipsters Hate blogger, Andrea Bartz.

One of the advantages of iPhone 4 over most Android-based competitors is 720p video recording. Now an older but still very popular Android smartphone, Google’s Nexus One, gets that feature — albeit by means of a hack.

Although not officially supported, this “feature” makes sense given that Nexus One’s camera is one of the most advanced cameras we’ve seen on a smartphone.

You must run Cyanogen's CM5.0.8test3 software, which unfortunately means that Android 2.2 (Froyo) is not supported. The full procedure to enable 720p video recording on your Nexus One is detailed here.

Future updates to the hack should include Froyo support, as well as better video and audio quality. Check out a very short sample 720p video, recorded with a Nexus One, below.
