Top 10 Robot Videos on YouTube

Posted: 15 May 2010 10:53 PM PDT

Robots are cool, but unless you stop by Stanford regularly or make it to MIT often, chances are you don’t see that many in your day-to-day life.

That’s where the internet comes in, and specifically YouTube, which offers hours and hours of robo-themed footage for your on-demand entertainment.

So, grab the popcorn, hit up the videos now and let us know in the comments which automatons get your vote.

Oh, and should you subscribe the the belief that robots are pretty much evil and will eventually overturn their human masters and rule the world, then you might still want to watch these videos to check out the kind of tech on display and see how far off such an uprising might be.

1. Giant Robot Dinosaurs from Japan

A video entitled “Giant Robot Dinosaurs from Japan” is never not going to be good. The next logical step is clearly to use these creations in a new feature film called “Rob-assic Park” in which an amusement park gets overrun by robo-dinos while Jeff Goldblum stalks around looking tall and saying I told you so.

2. CES 07: Honda Asimo Humanoid Robot Demo

A bit of a YouTube star, if there’s ever a robot to be voted least likely to rise up against his human overlords, it’s Honda’s humanoid “Asimo” who resembles a kid in a space suit and boasts a nice line in running, climbing stairs and conducting symphony orchestras.

3. Aldebaran Robotics’ Nao

This amazingly advanced robot boasts cognitive skills, a high level of motion (with 25 degrees of freedom) and is programmable, so you can customize it to do pretty much anything. Currently available to academic institutions for a high price, a consumer model is planned for 2011, so watch the demo above to start getting excited.

4. Dancing Sony Robots

Sony’s Qrio (notable for being the first bipedal robot capable of running) never reached production (it’s development was axed at the same time robo-dog AIBO got his marching papers), but as this video shows it could bash out some sweet moves in its time.

5. BigDog Overview

The DARPA-funded BigDog is a quadruped robot designed to be used as a kind of robotic mule in the field. This video demonstrates its incredible stability over all kinds of terrain, and even when taking a hit. It’s certainly much improved from the early beta.

6. Toyota’s Robot Quartet Band

This video is in Japanese, but music, or for that matter robot awesomeness, needs no translation. If this has got you hot for robots playing instruments, then be sure to check out the violin-playing android, also from Toyota.

7. Hanson Robotics ALICE

Hanson Robotics busies itself by “awakening intelligent robotic beings and granting them sparks of true consciousness and creativity.” Its Alice-bot is one example of the progress it has made with giving robotics realistic facial impressions with the aim of enabling “machine empathy” in the future. Be afraid robo-phobes.

8. The Robot Barman

Human barkeeps fear for your future! This “alcohol administering automation” created for Japanese beer brand Asahi could well be tending bar in a few year’s time — if they can programme it to have selective vision and a suitable sneer when someone orders anything with “Lite” in its name.

9. Robot Fish

If you’ve got the technical ability to re-create something from the underwater world as a robot you’d go for a shark, right? Not these guys. They make a blue goldfish. And it doesn’t even have any frickin’ lasers.

10. NASA Robonaut Humanoid Space Robot

The benefits of using robots in oxygen-free outer space have not gone un-noticed by the NASA brainiacs. NASA’s Robonaut, a futuristic space-man with flexible fingers, could one day be used in space to carry out repairs, leaving the humans free for more important tasks. Like tweeting.

BONUS: Cleaning Cat Uses iRobot Roomba 560 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

If the amount of videos on YouTube capturing cats sat on robotic vacuum cleaners is anything to go by, then the accepted wisdom that cats are clean animals certainly appears to be true.

If You Want Freedom, Don’t Use Proprietary Software [VIDEO]

Posted: 15 May 2010 06:20 PM PDT

Free software pioneer Richard Stallman spoke with us recently about the principles of free and open source programs, and what he had to say is as relevant and revolutionary as when he first started working in this field 30 years ago.

Our community has been talking a lot lately about what it means to be open, about what makes software open, about what makes companies open. No matter what talk of “openness” you hear in the media, no major web company — not Facebook, not Google, not Adobe and certainly not Apple — is creating truly free and open applications. Some may make gestures toward this ideology with APIs or “open source” projects, but ultimately, the company controls the software and the users’ data.

At the end of the day, if you want freedom and privacy, the only way to attain those goals is to abstain from proprietary software, including media players, social networks, operating systems, document storage, email services and any other program that is licensed, patented and locked down by a corporation. If you prefer convenience — well, best to stop complaining about your loss of freedom and/or privacy.

Like many heroes of the digital era, Richard Stallman is largely unsung by the general populace. Yet when it comes to user privacy and technological freedom, he’s probably one of the most committed individuals in the world.

By freedom, he means four things:

  1. The software should be freely accessible.
  2. The software should be free to modify.
  3. The software should be free to share with others.
  4. The software should be free to change and redistribute copies of the changed software.

Stallman started the Free Software Foundation. He even worked to make an operating system (GNU/Linux) that could be entirely free. And he is deeply opposed to proprietary software, software with commercial licenses that fly in the face of everything he calls freedom.

If you’ve ever downloaded music illegally, if you’ve ever complained about closed platforms, if you’ve ever gotten a serial number online for software you didn’t buy, if you’re worried about social networks controlling your data, you need to hear what Stallman has to say.

We got the chance to interview Stallman extensively at WordCamp San Francisco, and we’ll be posting segments of that interview each week. Stay tuned for insights on music sharing, Apple versus Adobe and more.

Note: Stallman asked that we use Ogg Theora, an open format, for encoding this video. To download the original video, go to its Wikimedia page. This video is published under a Creative Commons-No Derivatives license.

Why Steve Jobs Would Run America Better Than Obama [VIDEO]

Posted: 15 May 2010 03:57 PM PDT

Political pundit and comedian Bill Maher claimed last night that Steve Jobs would do a better job of running America than the Obama administration.

The comments, inspired by Obama’s recent claims that he doesn’t know how to work an iPod, point to Maher’s frustration with the conflation of backwardness and likability — shunning new-fangled gizmos is seen as endearing in America, he explains.

Maher’s solution? Bring in Steve Jobs to push the country forward:

“America needs to focus on getting Jobs — Steve Jobs. Because something tells me that Apple would have come up with a better idea for stopping an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico than putting a giant box on top of it.

In 2001, Apple reinvented the record player. In 2007, the phone. This year, the computer. I say, for 2011, we let them take a crack at America. Our infrastructure, our business model, our institutions. Get rid of the stuff that’s not working, replace it with something that does. For example, goodbye US Senate — Hello Genius Bar! So good luck, Steve — you’ll need it!”

The sentiments echo much of what’s being said about the two most controversial companies in the tech press right now: Facebook and Apple. While Jobs and Zuckerberg are seen as uncompromising, ruthless, even arrogant in their way of doing business, this decisiveness has also pushed tech forward in leaps and bounds.

Is Obama too concerned with being agreeable? Can he learn anything from Jobs? And can leaders be likable and revolutionary, or are these qualities mutually exclusive? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

HOW TO: Monitor the Gulf Oil Spill Using Social Media

Posted: 15 May 2010 02:00 PM PDT

Geoff Livingston co-founded Zoetica to focus on cause-related work, and released an award-winning book on new media Now is Gone in 2007.

As the ongoing oil spill crisis in the Gulf of Mexico continues, several organizations have created dynamic uses of social media to monitor the situation. These efforts range from a deploying combination of balloons, cameras and maps to chronicle the progress of the oil spill to old fashioned information dissemination on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Here are four ways non-profit and governmental organizations are helping citizens stay up-to-date on the Gulf situation.

1. Grassroots Mapping Provides Accurate Pictures

Grassroots Mapping uses balloons, kites, and other simple tools to produce their own aerial imagery of the oil spill. Supported by the MIT Media Lab’s Center for Future Civic Media and the Knight Foundation, the organization is not trying to duplicate satellite imagery or flyover data, but is encouraging complete open access to spill imagery. Grassroots Mapping is releasing all of its imagery into the public domain on places like Flickr.

2. EPA Deepwater Horizon Command Online

Don’t think the U.S. government is just standing on the sidelines for this crisis. In fact, you can visit the EPA’s Deepwater Horizon Unified Command Response effort online for the latest updates. In addition to blog updates and FAQs the site includes links to, Twitter, YouTube videos, and hundreds of pictures, as well as a very vibrant Facebook page with lots of concerned citizens offering feedback.

3. Another Great Ushahidi Crisis Map

While it has been around for years, Ushahidi really entered into the public consciousness with its fantastic mapping of the Haiti crisis. As reported last week on Mashable, the Louisiana Bucket Brigade is using the technology to develop an oil spill crisis map.

See how reports of oil-inspired incidents are growing around the coastline.

4. Greenpeace Provides Ongoing Coverage

Greenpeace USA has an ongoing blog about the oil spill where readers can find the latest news and images from the Gulf. Comprehensive coverage includes videos, blog posts, maps and Flickr images. There’s even a counter tabulating the minimum estimated amount of gallons of oil spilled into the Gulf of Mexico thus far.

What other social media sites are you using to monitor the crisis?

How Many Calories Do You Burn While Tweeting?

Posted: 15 May 2010 01:04 PM PDT

If you’ve ever wondered how much energy it takes to keep the world updated about your goings-on, look no further than TweetCalories, a novelty web app that shows you approximately how many calories you’ve burned over the last 24 hours by tweeting.

The app works by assuming several factors. For example, it’s figured that the average word length in a tweet is about 6 characters. It assumes the average user’s typing speed is 60 words per minute, that the user is of an average or healthy weight and normally burns around 2.65 calories per minute, and that it takes around 23 seconds to write and send a tweet of 140 characters. Based on these figures, the app’s creators have determined that sending a tweet burns around 1.03 calories.

Here, you can see the difference between calories burned by a more frequent tweeter versus one who tweets less often:

Sadly, there’s no ability to calculate the difference between tweeting while mobile versus tweeting from the web. But although we’re sure that updating one’s stream while on-the-go burns more calories, we don’t advocate the Twitter habit as a necessarily healthful lifestyle choice — remember, you burn calories while you’re sleeping, too, but no one ever called sleeping a good form of exercise.

TweetCalories was constructed as a clever bit of marketing by gargantuan ad agency Grupo ABC for a Brazilian gym, Companhia Athletica. What do you think about this social media marketing attempt: Does it hit or miss?

New Entry-Level MacBook Leaked [VIDEO]

Posted: 15 May 2010 12:02 PM PDT

A Vietnamese website — the same one that got hold of another Apple 4G iPhone last week — has posted a video and details about the new entry-level MacBook 7.1.

The machine’s CPU was upgraded to a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, increased from 2.26GHz in the previous generation, and graphics were given a shot in the arm with a NVIDIA GeForce 320M GPU. These updates will be the first for the MacBook since October 2009, when the notebook got a longer battery life and overall design reworking.

Apple’s recent round of laptop refreshes has thus far included upgrades to the MacBook Pro, including a standard 4GB of RAM and a choice between Intel’s i5 and i7 processors on larger models. Similar CPU and graphics changes appear to be trickling down to standard MacBooks, as well. Upgrades to the MacBook Air were also rumored but have yet to surface as fact.

Here’s a video of the alleged new MacBook being unboxed and its specs discussed:

And here are the pics that put the proof in the alleged pudding:

Do you think this leak is legit? And what’s with the sudden surge in Vietnamese leaks of Apple products? One thing is for certain: Apple’s era of secrecy might, indeed, be coming to an end.

Twitter King Dethroned? Britney Set to Overtake Ashton

Posted: 15 May 2010 11:02 AM PDT

Follower counts on Twitter don’t really mean anything, of course — still, we are surprised and a bit saddened to learn that the reigning champion and longtime poster boy of Twitter, Ashton Kutcher, may lose his spot as the #1 followed account to Britney Spears.

The two are neck-and-neck in the race to hit 5 million followers. This astronomical number is the work of long and diligent work on the part of each entity. Here’s what Ashton and Brit each have going for them and against them:

  • Spears’ account is almost four months older than Kutcher’s.
  • Kutcher actually uses his own account to send personal tweets about things he cares about.
  • Spears’ account is managed by her staff and is largely promotional or “BS alerts” when unfavorable tabloid reports surface. Tweets from “Brit” or “Britney” comprise around a third of all tweets from the account.
  • Like many “real” users, Kutcher follows a relatively small group of friends, just 553 people as of today.
  • Spears’ account is following nearly half a million others.
  • Kutcher updates his account every few hours, usually via Twitter client Brizzly.
  • Spears’ account is updated every few days. Updates are always posted from the web, even when the star tweets she is on location or at an event or party.
  • Kutcher regularly @replies regular users in conversations.
  • The Spears account doesn’t engage in conversations but features occasional retweets from Adam Leber, Spears’ manager, and Candie’s, the brand for which the star is currently shilling.
  • Spears’ account gets significantly more @replies and mentions than Kutcher’s.

Here’s a look at the stats according to TwitterCounter:

As you may recall, Kutcher was the first Twitter user to reach 1 million followers when he battled CNN for the top spot in April 2009. It’s also interesting to note that Kutcher’s account ranked far above Spears’ in popularity when the Twitter “accept” bug allowed users to force others to follow them back.

Basically, there’s no dispute as to who is the better, more interesting user of a real-time service for personal updates. Spears’ Twitter account is little more than another facet of her marketing machine. But the singer’s overall international popularity is apparently enough to gather an army of followers for even a hollow account.

What do you think: Would Spears’ account have gained more followers than Kutchers’ before now if her tweets were more authentic and less promotional? Do you think Twitter users will stage another “follow Ashton” campaign like the one that arose last year during the race with CNN?
