Top 10 YouTube News Bloopers

Posted: 29 May 2010 10:21 PM PDT

News anchor fails are always hilarious, because they are a stark contrast to the usual poise you generally see from such professional figures.

Here, we bring you a catalog of spoonerisms, giggling fits and the odd swear thrown in, from a variety of hapless anchors, roving reporters and weatherpeople.

View our top ten news bloopers below and as always, we’d love to hear about your favorite clips in the comments.

1. DID SHE SAY ASS CREAM?!

Yes, she did. And thanks to the wonders of the modern world, she shall henceforth be known as the “ass cream girl.” Only joking, love — at least you’ve got really shiny hair.

2. News Anchor Fail

Yes, the suspect does have very boggly eyes that we haven’t seen the like of since we last watched Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, but you’d think the gravity of the phrases “torso and body parts,” and “mother of two,” might keep Miss Chuckles here in check.

3. Live News Blooper – R Rated!

This delightfully random, and even more delightfully explicit, outburst comes out of nowhere. We love the cheeky chappy grin at the end as Mr. Potty-Mouth casually sticks his hands in his pockets. In his position we’d be placing them on our posterior, to protect from the butt-kicking about to be received.

4. News Blooper “Magniturd”

A 7.2 Magni-turd earthquake is serious stuff indeed, that’s pretty high up on the old Rectum Scale.

5. BBC Newsreader Blooper – FACEPALM

This gets inclusion not because the blooper was so terrible (we mean, who hasn’t confused “pay” for “pee”?) but, as the uploader of this YouTube video points out, it’s a magnificent example of a genuine, honest-to-God, live-on-TV, facepalm.

6. News Blooper – Spanked as a Kid?

“No, I wasn’t spanked as a kid per se, Bob, but I’ve seen plenty of paddle-action in my thirties…”

7. Fox Business Fail

The message here appears to be don’t go to Fox for your breaking financial news, as the team passes the Chrysler story around the studio as if it were a baby with a dirty diaper.

8. News Blooper: News Anchor Gets Lost and Confused

If you tuned in to this broadcast to learn more about Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder then you’d have been happy to see the anchor seems to be willing to give an on-air demonstration. Is this irony? We think it might be. Where’s Alanis Morrisette when you need her?

9. News Blooper “I’ve Got Gas”

We’d imagine there’s a real sense of freedom in looking America in the eye on live TV and announcing you’ve got wind. Then again…

10. Fox News Lady Slip Up

We wouldn’t be surprised if ole Shep had uploaded this clip himself, seeing his reaction to his co-presenter’s “cock”-up and his undoubted certainty that it would make it to YouTube. We’re watching you Shepard Smith…

BONUS: Zombie Kid Likes Turtles

Relegated to bonus status as the news person actually handles this as well as can be expected, this proves the ancient adage of never work with kids — or zombies.

Skype for iPhone Now Supports 3G Calling

Posted: 29 May 2010 06:49 PM PDT

There’s good news and bad news. The good: Skype 2.0 for iPhone [iTunes link] lets you make calls over 3G. The bad: After August, you’ll need to pay for the feature.

That’s right: The most yearned-for feature of Skype for iPhone, making calls over 3G, is finally here. The new app just landed in the app store, and by all accounts the 3G calls hold up fairly well.

Here’s the catch: After August 2010, Skype will start charging a “small monthly fee” for use of the 3G calling feature. You heard that right — even though you’re already paying AT&T (in the U.S., at least) for your data plan, Skype is throwing in an extra fee. At this point we’re not sure if the move is Skype’s own doing, or if the network operators had a hand in trying to make the Skype app a less desirable option.

10 Must-Have Apps for the New iPad Owner

Posted: 29 May 2010 05:34 PM PDT

iPad ImageThe iPad has finally made its international debut, meaning that thousands and thousands of new users will be enjoying Apple’s latest device over the coming weeks.

With the launch of the iPad comes the international launch of the iPad App Store, making it possible for us to play Words With Friends with our friends in Australia. There are already thousands of apps available in the App Store, and with the exception of apps focused on media services like Netflix, ABC or Pandora, most are also available internationally.

We’ve been fortunate enough to have the iPad in our screen-smudging paws for the past two months and in that time we’ve surveyed well over 100 apps and games for the new platform. While this list could easily be four or five times as long as it is, we wracked our brains and decided to pick ten of our favorite iPad apps for the new iPad owner.

1. Air Video

The iPad is a great media player. The size of the screen coupled with the quality of the display really makes it a great way to catch up on lots of content. Although you can use iTunes to transfer movie and music files to your iPad, converting and transferring can be a complicated and tedious process. This is why Air Video is so great — it makes it extremely simple to stream video from your Mac or PC to your iPad.

Just install the free Air Video server client on your PC, tell it what folders to watch or include and then fire up the app. Now select your computer and feel free to go through your lists of available content and watch it in great quality on the iPad! Air Video does a really terrific job of “live conversion,” meaning your video is converted as it plays, which saves time and makes it really easy to enjoy your video collection on the couch.

2. Real Racing HD

Real Racing for the iPhone was a great racing game. Real Racing HD is even better. The use of the accelerometer for turning and maneuvering might make you look a little weird to your friends, but the graphics, sound, controls and gameplay are all top-notch.

Seriously, this is a great racing game and its a great game to really show off the power of the iPad!

3. GoodReader for iPad

We’ve written about our affinity for GoodReader both on the iPhone and the iPad in the past, but it bears a repeated mention. Simply put, GoodReader is one of the best document readers/file managers out there. Period. You can connect to Dropbox, Box.net, Google Docs, FTP servers, and local computers, and download files directly off the web.

More than just a PDF viewer (though it is a great PDF viewer), the app can read a variety of different file types and can even let you open documents inside other apps to make editing a breeze.

4. Mondo Solitaire

Mondo Solitaire was one of the apps we highlighted in our early roundup of iPad video previews. In practice, the app is extremely addictive and extremely entertaining.

Mondo Solitaire comes in two varieties, a pack of the most popular games or the whole shebang. If you like card games, we recommend getting the full package and then having a blast playing through tons of variations of Solitaire and Freecell.

I have personally spent many hours playing Mondo Solitaire that otherwise could have been spent sleeping or being productive.

5. Wired Magazine

Released earlier this week, Wired for the iPad has already sold over 24,000 copies. For good reason too: Wired for the iPad is a great example of what publishers and content creators can do when they really fire on all cylinders.

While we aren’t sure if we would buy Wired every month without some sort of better subscription plan, the first issue, which includes a look at the making of Toy Story 3, is really worth checking out.

6. Kindle for iPad

Apple’s iBooks application is fantastic, but when it comes to content selection, Amazon still has the lead. Kindle for the iPad is a really good e-reader app, and makes it easy to browse through books. It seamlessly launches the web-based book store to make purchasing a snap.

We think Apple has the edge in overall presentation, but you can’t beat Kindle in price or selection. Also, while not as utterly beautiful as iBooks, Kindle for the iPad is still great to look at.

7. Epicurious

Even if you’re like me and cooking consists of re-heating take-out and making reservations, there is something to love about the Epicurious app. There are so many recipes and ideas, not to mention gorgeous pictures, that this is a great app to have on hand before hitting the market or just to gaze at while waiting for the pizza delivery guy.

8. Dropbox

If you are a Dropbox user, you owe it to yourself to get the Drobox app for the iPad. It brings all of what makes the iPhone app great and makes it even better. You can save content directly to your device, you can upload content off your device and you can view and playback media content all in the app.

Dropbox is a great way to stay connected to the documents on your computer no matter where you are.

9. The Guardian Eyewitness

UK publication The Guardian released a really terrific iPad app that features its stunning photography. Visually, this app is one of our favorites. The form factor of the iPad makes it perfect for really enjoying and studying the art that accompanies news stories.

10. NewsRack

NewsRack is our current pick as the best newsreader available for the iPad. It syncs with Google Reader seamlessly, so if you add a feed, it is added to Google Reader — if you remove it, it’s removed there too. However, you can selectively sync only certain feeds or categories, which can make news reading on the iPad more manageable.

The iPad is a terrific way to browse the web, and that includes RSS feeds. NewsRack is a top-notch app that also works on the iPhone, if you want to keep everything in sync across devices.

Twitter: 15 Billion Tweets and Counting [PIC]

Posted: 29 May 2010 03:06 PM PDT

Twitter has surpassed 15 billion tweets less than three months after it broke the 10 billion count.

The above tweet, sent minutes ago from @EGRK, is the 15 billionth tweet sent on the popular microblogging service. It is yet another milestone for the maturing company.

Tweet #15,000,000,000 is also proof that Twitter’s growth is accelerating. Twitter broke one billion tweets in November of 2008. It took nearly a year for it to reach 5 billion.

Tweet growth has been accelerating, though. Twitter surpassed 10 billion tweets on March 4th, 2010, growing by 5 billion tweets in just four months. Now it has jumped from 10 billion to 15 billion in less than three, showing that engagement is rising, not falling.

We want to note that tweet #15,000,000,000 may not correlate to the actual 15 billionth tweet, because the tweet IDs have been changed several times due to the Twitpocalypse. The count is artificially high, but it’s unclear by how much. Still, the engagement growth is a great indicator for the health of the Twitterverse.

Top 10 Stop Motion Videos on YouTube

Posted: 29 May 2010 02:00 PM PDT

Stop motion film-making is a labor of love, so consider this collection of 10 amazing mini stop motion movies a love song to the format.

Encompassing music, graffiti, photography, computer gaming and even horror, these YouTube videos show off some inspiring creativity and represent hours and hours of work.

Have a browse through our top picks and then let us know your favorite stop motion movies in the comments below.

1. Stop Motion With Wolf And Pig

This much-emulated video shows just what you can create with a camera, your imagination and a papier-mâché pig.

2. MUTO a Wall-Painted Animation by BLU

Watching this “ambiguous animation painted on public walls,” you soon forget you’re seeing stitched together images of graffiti and lose yourself in the mesmerizing mutations.

3. DEADLINE Post-It Stop Motion

Bang-yao Liu’s final college project takes the Post-It notes that were haunting him over ever-approaching deadlines and makes them the star of the show.

4. T-SHIRT WAR!!

Now with a McDonald’s/Coke ad under their belts (along with, we presume, wads of cash) “internetainers” Rhett and Link live up to their made-up-word job titles with this amusing vid.

5. Punch Drysdale

Featuring another duo, this clip is the intro video for sketch comedy troupe punchDRYSDALE’s comedy videos, but it also works well as a standalone satire of modern life.

6. Monogrenade – Ce Soir

This spell-binding video accompanies Montreal group Monogrenade’s single “Ce Soir” and was created by award-winning cinematographer Christophe Collette entirely in stop motion.

7. Game Over by PES

The stop motion artist known simply as “PES” is a genius in the field with a stack of YouTube hits. This retro game themed video takes everyday objects and recreates classic titles we all know and love.

8. Stop Motion Rubik’s Cube

As the number of videos on the topic will confirm, the humble Rubik’s Cube is ripe for some stop motion action, but none do it better than the creator of this clip with its funky soundtrack and muted colors.

9. Her Morning Elegance / Oren Lavie

A beautiful video for a beautiful song, this video is comprised of 2,096 still frames.

10. Crooked Rot

From the deliciously dark mind of David Firth (who also gave us the Salad Fingers animated YouTube series) this video illustrates that not all stop motion is, or needs be, sweet and light.

BONUS: Ooh Yeah – Dancing Headphones

Relegated to bonus status here, as it’s not available on YouTube, Beshart’s dancing headphones are like the Jackson Five of the musical headgear world and crank out some great moves, along with a little help from a cardboard Moby.

WARNING: Facebook Malware Attack on the Loose

Posted: 29 May 2010 12:05 PM PDT

A Facebook phishing attack is on the loose this weekend — the third widespread attack on the site in the past three weeks. The attack attempts to steal your Facebook login credentials, install malware on your computer, and even get your home address.

The attack is spread via a “hilarious video” posted to Facebook walls, reports WebSense — when clicked, a form appears requesting your Facebook login.

The attack then returns you to Facebook, installs an app called “Media Player HD”, and asks you to download the “FLV player” — doing so installs malware on your machine. It gets worse: Depending on your location, you may also be presented with a contest to win an iPad … if you just enter your home address.

To avoid getting caught, simply remove the “hilarious video” if you find it on your Facebook wall. If you see it elsewhere on Facebook, don’t click it … and of course remember the obvious rule: Don’t enter your Facebook login anywhere other than Facebook.com.

If you already fell for the attack, change your Facebook password, uninstall the Facebook app (often called “Media Player HD”), and run a virus/malware scan on your computer.

The video below, courtesy of Websense, explains the attack.
