Facebook To Start Rolling Out New Page Width

Posted: 24 Aug 2010 01:31 AM PDT

Facebook Logo

Caution, Facebook Page administrators: this week, Facebook is slated to start rolling out the new width – 520 pixels, compared to earlier width of 760 pixels – of Page tabs.

The change has been announced back in October 2009, but was delayed, presumably to let administrators prepare for the reduced tab width. Still, many popular Pages still use 760 pixel wide elements, which will look broken once Facebook implements the change. A good example is this tab on the official Victoria’s Secret Facebook Page.

If your Page contains elements that are over 520 pixels wide, you should reduce them to that width as soon as possible.

Get Free, Real-Time Social Media Data and Charts from ViralHeat

Posted: 24 Aug 2010 12:04 AM PDT

Social media analytics company ViralHeat is giving away free access to a treasure trove of data from Twitter, Facebook and a number of other social properties, all housed within the site’s more than 4,000 topic-based profiles.

The company’s revamped ViralHeat Social Trends offering gives users a fast and simple way to create their own auto-updating social media charts, which can be embedded as widgets elsewhere on the web, as well. Users can pull data and sentiment analysis from member-generated topic profiles spanning topics such as news, entertainment, music, sports and politics to create their own charts.

The idea is to help individuals capture and track real-time buzz and sentiment around an event, movie, celebrity or product with convenient widget-like charts optimized for sharing and embedding. The most obvious use case is for bloggers and publishers looking to supplement breaking news stories with live social media analysis on the topics they’re covering.

Social Trends will also give users access to ViralHeat’s repository of social media infographics.

On the business side of things, ViralHeat will be working with brands and publishers to harness these social media charts for custom offerings — think stylized dashboards for always-updating social media analysis. ESPN is a launch partner. The sports media company will be launching a custom chart on ESPN.com to highlight the social media power rankings for each of the 32 teams in the NFL. That initiative is slated to go live in the first week of September.

For brands, marketers, agencies and consultants, we’d like to know if you find this kind of information helpful. In the comments, tell us what kinds of social media analytics you use and whether Social Trends is an interesting product for you and your business.

56 Million Americans Are Playing Social Games [STATS]

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 08:43 PM PDT

It’s no secret that social games are one of the hottest (and potentially most lucrative) aspects of social networks today.

But it’s a mistake to think that casual, social network-based games are just for web geeks. A new study from market research firm NPD Group shows that one out of every five Americans over the age of six has played an online social game at least once. Altogether, that’s nearly 60 million Americans, adults and kids alike.

For a relatively new entrant to the gaming market, social gaming has made a huge debut.

These figures are good news for social networks, which have traditionally relied on advertising dollars to flesh out post-VC budgets. Social games can help create a new revenue stream, one that solely relies on end users opening their wallets to third-party applications. Virtual goods and currencies are a huge part of the social gaming market, and they turn a casual user experience into big business for the startups, developers and platforms that offer them.

NPD’s study shows that 10% of respondents had spent money playing social games and 11% said they planned to do so in the future.

In 2009, Internet users bought around $2.2 billion worth of virtual goods; experts forecast that number will increase to $6 billion by 2013. And the best-performing social games can inspire repeat purchases in around 41% of users. Some stats peg North American gamers’ average expenditure per user of $74 over just four months.

As far as demographics are concerned, this study shows that the social gaming crowd tends to be older and female; around 53% of players are women. To those unaccustomed to looking at video game demographic stats, a 49/53 split might seem fairly even; however, this number bucks a decades-long trend of women as the minority in the ranks of video game players. Traditionally, males dominate when it comes to console game purchase and use; female adoption of social games is a remarkable change from this norm.

Another interesting point in this study is that most of these social gamers have never played a traditional video game; 35% have no previous gaming experience whatsoever.

According to other research, the average social gamer tends to be female and around 43 years old. Facebook is the most popular destination for online games, with 83% of respondents saying they have played games there. The average player has played six social games.

Do you think the meteoric rise in user adoption and investor attention in social gaming will continue? How do you feel about the popularity of games such as Zynga’s FarmVille or other titles from companies like RockYou, Playfish and Playdom? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Hunch Now Helps You Discover What’s Best in Your Area

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 07:10 PM PDT

Hunch, a collective intelligence app that delivers personalized — and, as many users have found, highly accurate — recommendations based on individual responses to a set of taste-determining questions, has launched an alpha version of its new Local Search feature.

Users can visit Hunch.com/local to get suggestions on everything from restaurants and grocery stores to spas and museums in their area.

Because Hunch’s accuracy increases in proportion to the amount of data it has collected from users, the feature currently functions best in urban areas, Co-Founder Chris Dixon explained.

I was initially impressed to see that the app lists a good number of my favorite restaurants and wine bars near Mashable’s New York headquarters on the first results page, along with several that look like promising matches for future exploration. At the bottom is a slider I can use to filter between suggestions that are uniquely suited to me versus ones that are generally popular.

Although the web app is useful, it’s primary function is to showcase what Hunch’s technology can do. “The best way to leverage our technology is by partnering with other sites,” Dixon said. He hinted that several major partnerships would be announced in the next couple of weeks. Also, a new version of Hunch’s self-service API will be rolling out soon so any developer can take advantage of its algorithms.

Dixon believes Local Search in particular could be used to improve location-based services such as Yelp and Foursquare. He noted that one of the recurring problems of Yelp’s star-rating system is that it doesn’t always accurately predict whether or not a visitor will like a given venue because not every user is going to like the same things. Yelp’s service could benefit from including Hunch’s personalized ratings alongside the general ones the site currently offers, Dixon thinks.

Try the app out for yourself and let us know what you think. Did you find its suggestions relevant?

Google Earth for Android Goes Under the Sea

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 05:58 PM PDT

According to a recent blog post from Google, Earth for Android will now allow for experiences of the submarine variety.

The latest 1.1 version of Google Earth for Android includes features that will let you delve into the mysterious depths of the ocean as well as the more terrestrial spaces of the planet’s surface.

Google first dove underwater with its Earth product early last year. At that time, the company announced it would partner with organizations such as National Geographic to create a sort of Street View of the seas.

Earlier this year, those partnerships came to fruition with Ocean Showcase, a dazzling new feature that highlighted surf spots, shipwrecks, marine research and more.

It’s fascinating to see the underwater aspects of Google Earth coming to handheld devices, as well.

“For example,” writes Google product manager Jenifer Austin Foulkes, “check out the landscape and terrain in Monterery Bay Canyon, which is larger than the Grand Canyon, by zooming in on Google Earth below the ocean surface just off the coast. Once underwater, you can use the ‘look around’ button to tilt the view and see the extent of this great undersea canyon.”

This version of Earth for Android includes an "Explore the Ocean" layer. Seemingly similar to the Ocean Showcase, this feature shows off hundreds of images and video from Google’s content partners.

And if you’re running Android 2.2 (a.k.a. Froyo), you’ll be happy to learn that Google Earth supports Flash in balloons, making it easy for you to view videos from within the app. For most devices, you can also use two-finger navigation to "look around" and change your view when examining underwater mountains and canyons.

If you’d like to check out the app on your Android handset, just use this QR code:

Firefox Private Browsing Data Leaves Little to the Imagination

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 04:52 PM PDT

The Mozilla Firefox metrics blog just published detailed data about what times of the day Firefox users switch over to private browsing mode (a.k.a. porn mode) and for how long. The results probably won’t surprise you.

Some Firefox users opted into a study called “Week in the Life of a Browser” that recorded their browser usage; and while the researchers didn’t record what users were doing or what sites they were visiting while they were in private mode, they did track when those users turned it on and off. They identified four daily spikes in usage.

The first is around lunchtime, then there’s another right after people get home from work around 5:00 PM. Then there’s a spike around 10:00 PM and a final, smaller one a couple hours after midnight.

The lunch break would seem to indicate that many office workers don’t trust their resident IT guys not to look through their personal information and browsing history when they do non-work browsing. The after-work spike may be less explicable. You can probably formulate some ideas about the late night peaks.

The study determined the average private browsing session lasted 10 minutes, with the 25th percentile at four minutes and the 75th at 22 minutes.

Are these times and durations what you expected? Let us know in the comments. Just try not to go into too much detail if you’re a cynic about it, or someone might have to turn on private browsing to visit Mashable, too!

Location Faceoff: Facebook Places vs. Foursquare

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 03:58 PM PDT

The last time we visited the location market in our weekly Web Faceoff series, Foursquare established itself as leader in a lopsided reader vote.

Now there’s a new challenger gunning for Foursquare’s position, and it’s got 500 million users as ammunition.

Last week, Facebook made its dramatic entry into geolocation with the launch of Facebook Places. The social network’s new product brings the checkin and location-broadcasting trend to its massive user base. With so many of Foursquare’s key features duplicated on Facebook’s platform, does the location startup stand a chance?

Foursquare seems prepared and projects confidence when faced with the Facebook threat, but we want to hear your opinion. For this week’s Faceoff, we want you to choose which you prefer: Facebook Places or Foursquare. While it’s too early to tell how Facebook Places will affect Foursquare, Yelp or the location market in general, this poll will give us a clue as to how the battle might play out.

Cast your vote in our poll by Friday, August 27 at 12:00 PM PT. Then we want to hear your opinion on how this battle of geolocation services will play out; let us know what you think in the comments.

Your Next iPad Might Be an iMac

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 01:58 PM PDT

If recent patents are any indication, your future iMac might just include a built-in iPad.

The website Patently Apple has uncovered some European patent filings filed in September 2009 and first published in January 2010. The document outlines a system for an iMac touch, a device that acts like a standard desktop computer in one orientation and a tablet in another.

The idea is that when the device is in the upright position, like a standard iMac or flatscreen monitor, it can be controlled using a mouse and keyboard. When reclined, an accelerometer will trigger advanced multi-touch mode and switch the operating system from Mac OS X to iOS.

In addition to seamlessly switching modes/operating systems, the patent information also details a system that would allow peripheral control of an iPhone or iPad from the iMac touch.

The idea of the two operating systems co-existing and switching seamlessly based on orientation is awesome for a desktop and even more killer for a netbook. I love both my MacBook Pro and my iPad, but if I could combine them into one super device, that would be the best of all worlds.

Some of the information in these patents go back to 2007, so it is clear Apple has been hard at work perfecting touch for the desktop for quite some time. The company’s most recent accessory, the Magic Trackpad, is just another indication that the company is slowly but surely aiming to bring touch to the desktop.

What do you think of the patent documents? Would you be interested in a dual-function iMac or MacBook?

Why You Can’t Block Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 01:17 PM PDT

This weekend the web discovered that Mark Zuckerberg is unblockable on Facebook, and while many assumed that was an Easter egg created by Facebook developers, it turns out that’s not the case. Rather, Zuckerberg is unblockable because of an automated system that kicks in when too many people try to block one user.

This afternoon we received an e-mail from a Facebook spokesperson who revealed:

“This error isn’t specific to any one account. It’s generated when a person has been blocked a certain large number of times. In very rare instances, a viral campaign will develop instructing lots of people to all wrongly block the same person. The purpose of this system is to protect the experience for people targeted by these campaigns. We’re constantly working to improve our systems and are taking a closer look at this one.”

It’s not as fun an explanation as CEO vanity or developer facetiousness, but there you have it.

Attention to Zuckerberg’s unblockable status was initially brought by the website Block Zuck, but Gawker spoke with the website’s founder and learned that the site was originally the base of operations for a viral campaign to mass-block Zuckerberg in protest of the social network’s controversial user privacy policies.

Campaigns like that one may very well have triggered Zuckerberg’s unblockable status. We can think of a few situations in which an undeserving innocent could be the victim of unfair mass blockings, so that could arguably be a good feature in some cases.

Snoop Dogg Promotes “Mafia Wars” by Blowing Up a Truck [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 12:56 PM PDT

Last week, rapper Snoop Dogg promoted the social online game Mafia Wars by blowing up an armored truck in the middle of the Nevada desert. Video of the event garnered 2 million live views on Ustream.

Las Vegas was recently added as a playable city in the social game Mafia Wars, and game-maker Zynga has been trying to promote the expansion in creative ways. Believe it or not, Snoop Dogg’s explosive antics aren’t the most controversial or unusual gimmick; Zynga contracted ad agency Davis Elen to distribute fake $25,000 bills on the sidewalks of San Francisco as well. Anyone who picked up the bills found a web address for the Mafia Wars website.

That campaign drew criticism from San Francisco City Hall, which claimed that it involved illegal littering that cost the city a significant amount of money to clean.

To our knowledge, the Snoop Dogg video hasn’t made anyone angry yet. Its two million views on Ustream made it the most-viewed single event on the live video site in 2010 thus far. That level of viewership matches some network TV programs.

Snoop Dogg was already a Ustream star before this; his album launch became an online reality TV broadcast several months ago. And don’t forget that he sold branded virtual goods in the online social game WeeWorld just a few days ago. It looks like this rapper is in his element here. Who would have thought?

Here’s the video from the official Mafia Wars YouTube channel.

As part of the ongoing "Cubicle Spy" series here at Mashable, we're taking a look inside the coolest, quirkiest, and most gadget-laden offices of people who work with social media.

For our second peek into the cube, we scoped out the office of Steve Rubel, senior vice president and director of insights for Edelman Digital, a division of Edelman — the world’s largest independent PR firm.

Rubel’s job involves traveling the world and helping clients identify emerging technologies and trends that can be applied in marketing communications programs. Though he might be a self-declared minimalist, Rubel’s workspace contains an interesting variety of toys, gadgets and military paraphenalia. Click through the gallery for a behind-the-scenes look.

Steve Wozniak Trading Card

Evan Carmichael, a Canadian entrepreneur, developed a series of entrepreneur trading cards. During the development stage, he reached out to bloggers and influencers, asking who they thought should be on the list. Steve replied, "Benjamin Franklin." This card of Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak sits on Rubel's desk.

The June 1983 Issue of Popular Science magazine.

The magazine's cover announces "The new generation of incredible do-it-all hand-held computers." Comparing then to now, Rubel said, "It reminds me of how technology changes very quickly." He also joked, "Some of them are not too different [from] iPads today."

Donald Duck Figurine

After graduating college, Rubel's goal was to work in public relations for the Walt Disney company. He moved to Orlando, lived in a trailer park and sold hats outside Disney World for $5 an hour.

Wayang Puppet

Rubel travels frequently, speaking at conferences around the world. He picked up this shadow puppet after speaking at a conference in Indonesia.

Umbrella With Flashlight

Rubel packs this dual-feature umbrella in his travel case. It works like a normal umbrella, except a flashlight is built into the base of the handle.

Goals and To-Do List

Every day, Rubel writes out a to-do list and carries it, along with his weekly goals, in what he calls his "quarterback's wrist coach."

Hewlett-Packard Wall of Touch

Among the different gadgets in Edelman's reception area is a giant monitor, known as the Wall of Touch. Users can access cable feeds, satellite feeds, or the Internet, by touching any of the nine 43" televisions.

Russian Officer's Wheel Cap

This Cold War relic sits on a windowsill in Edelman's lobby. Feel free to try it on and snap a photo with your cell phone.

Cee-lo’s “F**ck You” Goes Viral [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 12:18 PM PDT

It’s not often that a music video goes viral by virtue of, well, its lyrics and whatnot, but that’s exactly what’s happened with Cee-lo’s (of Gnarls Barkley/Goodie Mob fame) newest single, “F**ck You.”

According to Pitchfork, Cee-lo posted the video for “F**ck You” to his YouTube page this past Thursday, and since then the catchy song has racked up more than one million views. The YouTube page says that the video will get a full version this week, which will apparently flesh out the current iteration (which merely features lyrics to the song). The song — from Cee-lo’s solo album The Ladykiller — will be on sale in the U.S. and UK on October 4.

Still, despite the fact that the video itself is pretty much bare-bones, it’s managed to break the one-million view mark in less than a week, without featuring a super famous personality (a la Lady Gaga), a teen idol (a la Justin Bieber) or some kind of crazy contraption coupled with intense dance moves (a la OK Go). No, it seems that the video has gone viral based solely on the merits of the song itself — and perhaps the shock value of the word “f**ck.”

The denizens of Gnarls Barkley are really no strangers to going viral. When Cee-lo Green and Danger Mouse came out with “Crazy” in 2006, it went viral pretty much instantly, spawning a ton of covers. It seems that this song has the same appeal as the previous hit (sans Danger Mouse of course), capturing audiences with fresh sound and novelty.

The jam taps into 1950s nostalgia, while also subverting the buttoned-expectations that go along with the sound by injecting that most taboo of curse words. Harry Nilsson did it back in the ’70s with “You’re Breaking My Heart,” and now it’s Cee-lo’s turn to reclaim the F-Bomb.

Recently, hypebot wondered, “Can Internet Make Cee-Lo Green’s ‘F*ck You’ A Hit?” pointing out that it’s not really the most radio-friendly of songs. While there is a clean-for-radio version of the song, which aired on Trevor Nelson’s Radio 1 show this past weekend (you can find it around the 53-minute mark) with the words “forget you” subbed it, it seems that this raunched-out version is doing fine on its own. And with ultra-famous folks like 50 Cent already remixing response vids, we’re sure that attention will only continue to grow for this made-for-summer song. (Why, oh why, didn’t this come out in June?)

Check out the video below. Also, as if it weren’t clear enough already, this ain’t SFW, folks.

Google Adds Push Support to iPhone App

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 11:50 AM PDT

Google has just updated its Google Mobile App for iOS, adding push notifications for Gmail and Google Calendar directly from the app.

Google posted some new screenshots that detail the new feature earlier today. In a settings panel, notifications can be configured to turn Calendar or Gmail notifications on.

An icon badge will appear beside the Google app when new messages are received and pop-up notifications will appear for Calendar reminders.

Users have been able to get push notifications from Gmail using the built-in iPhone mail application since last year, however, that has required setting up a Google account as an Exchange ActiveSync account.

Until iOS 4, users were limited to only one Exchange account, which limited some of the functionality of the feature. Although this limitation has been lifted, for users that prefer to use the web Gmail interface on the iPhone, push notifications are a nice treat.

For Calendar alerts, the feature is nice but less necessary. Apple has supported syncing and notifications from Google Calendar for quite some time and it’s easy to add an existing Google Calendar or calendars to the iPhone using the native calendar app.

Google has also updated some of its search tools for mobile search within the app for things like stock symbols, currency conversions and flight numbers. Much like Microsoft has done with its Bing Mobile app, results will show up before you even hit “search” while entering items that fit those parameters.

Google will be rolling out updates to the Google Mobile app over the next few hours.

Justin Bieber Tops Twitter’s Most-Listed Chart

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 10:33 AM PDT

As you may already be aware, Lady Gaga is Twitter’s most-followed user with more than 5.74 million followers. But who is Twitter’s most-listed user?

When Twitter Lists launched last year, there was a frenzy of interest and activity surrounding curated Lists and, of course, the number of Lists each user was on. We vividly remember the heated competition to be included on popular Lists.

Now that 10 months have passed since the introduction of Lists, who reigns supreme as Twitter’s most-listed user? Is it Lady Gaga, Twitter’s most-followed user? Or how about Britney Spears, who previously held the crown? Or perhaps it’s Ashton Kutcher, the “king of Twitter,” according to Oprah?

While Gaga (#2), Spears (#7) and Kutcher (#9) are all in the top 10 of Twitter’s most-listed users chart, the undisputed champion is actually teenage hearthrob Justin Bieber. According to Fan Page List, Bieber is on more than 264,000 lists, more than double Lady Gaga’s 106,000+. President Obama is third, while celebrities Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez and Ellen DeGeneres also appear in the top 10. The only brand to make the list is CNN Breaking News, with 61,000+ listings.

We just barely missed the cut at #11, with 51,600+ listings.

Does this top 10 list surprise you? Who do you think should be on it? Take a look at the list below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Philadelphia Tax Code Sparks Big Controversy with Small Bloggers

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 10:16 AM PDT

Do you use Google AdSense or other ad services on your personal blog or website? If you live in the city of Philadelphia, you might want to rethink that decision.

Last week, the Philadelphia City Paper published an article discussing the potential impact of the city’s Business Privilege Tax on residents that engage in “activity for profit” — activity that includes blogging, provided a user’s blog runs advertisements or makes money in other ways.

The city of Philadelphia’s Business Tax Privilege requires residents to pay a privilege license for a one-time fee of $300, or $50 annually, in addition to a percentage of gross receipts and/or taxable net income, depending on the nature of the business.

The problem is that this license technically applies to any person conducting business activity in Philadelphia, regardless of that activity’s profit or loss margins. That means that Joe Blogger who makes $12 per year from AdSense ads on his blog is theoretically required to pay 6.45% in taxes on that income, in addition to the cost of the license.

We’ve reached out to the Philadelphia Revenue Department for further clarification on this issue and have also thoroughly examined the tax code associated with this tax.

How Bad Is This, Really?

Understandably, some Philly bloggers — particularly those who have received notices requesting payments for the BPT license — are extremely irate about this tax. After all, it does seem ridiculous when the cost of the license vastly exceeds the revenue generated by a blog.

Still, it’s important to note that this tax provision is not singling out bloggers. Freelance writers are also affected by this provision, as is any other contract worker who primarily operates within the city limits. The Business Privilege Tax is oft-criticized and members of the City Council are planning on introducing a bill in September that makes some changes to the program.

Additionally, although the $300 license fee is steep, it is a lifetime license. After the license is paid, the tax rate on either gross receipts or taxable net income is pretty low. If a blogger truly intends to try to earn income or revenue off his or her blog, it’s only fair to adhere to the tax policies in the city where they operate.

This provision also really only has a real-world impact on any blogger who reports their blogging income on their individual income tax return. The city will send notices to users who claim income from AdSense or other blogging-related streams, but it isn’t like they are doing full-scale audits for every person in Philly who runs a blog with ads.

Keep in mind, Google AdSense has a payout threshold of $100. The bare minimum to even obtain an AdSense Tax ID number is $10. If your blog has made less than that you can’t file it on your income taxes anyway.

While we think that this tax provision is pretty excessive — especially in edge cases, like those bloggers who make $11 per year off from AdSense — it’s important to remember that an easy way to get rid of any obligation to the city of Philadelphia is to stop running ads on your blog.

Perhaps the increased attention on this issue will also galvanize Philadelphians to reform the Business Privilege Tax.

HOW TO: Create and Deploy Your Own QR Codes

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 09:29 AM PDT

QR Code Image

What’s black and white and super-confusing to wrap your head around? If you’re unfamiliar with QR codes, not to worry. Those fuzzy boxes on business cards and promotional swag are easily scannable information barcodes. Essentially, you point your camera at the image and get a message, website, or other piece of content beamed directly to your smartphone or computer.

QR codes are still a relatively foreign concept for most casual users, but they have a lot of potential to change the mobile game. Some uses include added nutritional information on groceries, the ability to comparison shop for textbooks, access to free giveaways and bonuses at major music festivals.

We’ve already shown you how to use QR codes for your business, but we didn’t actually show you how to create the code itself. For anyone new to QR codes, or for those looking for a refresher, click through our gallery for a super basic, step-by-step guide on how to create and deploy your own scannable messages.

1. What Do You Want to Say?

The golden rule: Share something worth sharing. Shiny new technologies won't make up for awful content. Think about whether the message, website, or information you are sharing is appropriate for quick, mobile consumption. QR codes can be used in a bunch of ways.

Are you looking for a laugh? A new contact? A valuable service? We chose this comic from Penny Arcade.

2. Find a QR Code Generator

There are a bunch of sites that can help you create a quick QR code. This guide will focus on Kaywa, one of the simplest and most popular non-commercial services. You can also check out sites like Zxing Project, delivr, QR Stuff, or Maestro for some different approaches and specific feature-sets.

3. Add Your Content

You can select what type of code you want to create by clicking on the buttons. We opted for text so we could manually paste the link and also add a small note. You can select the size of your code, but bigger is generally better. After you hit "generate," you can toggle the size from the same menu.

4. Make Sure it Works

Wait! Make sure your code works the way you want it to before you slap it onto your site, card, etc. You'll need to download a reader app in order to access the buried content. Most sites that generate QR codes also offer a reader, such as Kaywa above.

5. Share It

You can add this code by sharing its permalink (as you would any other link), embed it into your blog, or save the image to a file which you can print on flyers, business cards, or anything else you can think of.

6. Finished Product

Here's the finished product; a cartoon message for new parents.

If you're interested in the nitty gritty of QR codes, Wikipedia has more information than you probably need to get caught up.

What are you your thoughts? Are QR codes a mobile revolution, or just another tech gimmick?

Dish Network Begins Streaming TV Shows Online

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 09:08 AM PDT

Beginning Tuesday, satellite TV provider Dish Network will stream TV shows to its subscribers on a website called DishOnline.com and through set-top boxes and mobile devices.

That differentiates Dish’s online offering from some other cable or satellite TV Internet channels like Time Warner and Comcast’s TV Everywhere strategies, which are primarily focused on web streaming.

According to The New York Times, the first wave of content will include shows from the Discovery Channel, HGTV and MTV. Dish plans to serve both TV shows and movies, but most of the content will only be available to subscribers. Some clips or trailers might stream to you even if you’re not a subscriber, but full-length programs and movies will generally be restricted.

We said it when TV Everywhere was announced, and we’ll say it again: These online services would be more impressive — and more successful at battling piracy — if they were available to anyone who wanted to pay or view ads, without signing up for an expensive, traditional satellite TV package.

Content providers are picky about everything from the number of episodes placed online, to the number of devices the content can appear on, to the authentication methods used to verify subscribers — so that’s not as easily done as it is said. Still, we’re impressed that Dish Network has opted for a multi-platform approach.

Subscribers will be able to watch the online content on certain set-top boxes, in addition to the traditionally distributed shows they record with their DVRs. NewTeeVee reports that iOS, Android and BlackBerry apps are coming too.

4 Things to Consider When Creating a Business Logo

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 06:59 AM PDT

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

With all the noise on the web today, good branding is more important than ever. Even if your business is not a cutting edge tech startup, the overall identity of your face on the web, social media, and your storefront should be unified, clean, and compelling.

There’s a lot about doing business on the web that is inexpensive and turn-key: All you need to fire up a basic website, blog, or social media presence is an e-mail address. But no web app can substitute for real design vision, and your logo is the linchpin that ties all of your business’s aesthetics together.

Whether you’re going to hire a pro or put those college art electives to good use, take a moment to heed some advice from the experts about what makes a biz logo “sticky” in the minds of web-savvy consumers.

1. Identity in a World of Infinite Choice

A logo is a first impression. Before a customer knows anything about what you do or sell, they’ll view your identity with two choices: Keep reading, or click away. On the web, that choice is made in milliseconds.

Like the clothes you’d wear to a business meeting, your logo has to say, “I’m smart, I’m savvy, and I can compete,” at first glance.

“[The] first thing any small business owner should do is realize their business exists in a marketplace driven by multi-national brands,” said Von Glitschka, an illustrative designer who works extensively on identity and branding. “Their identity needs to be able to compete visually on the same level to be a success.”

The reason the web has been such a boon for small businesses is that they have reach comparable to big corporations like never before. So come to the table prepared, design-wise.

“A small business can maneuver and adapt to an ever-changing culture far easier than a multi-national brand can,” Glitschka added. “But if they don’t lay a good foundation for their marketing via a well-designed and appropriate logo and identity, they are handicapping themselves right out of the gate.”

So where do you start?

“Research,” said Sneh Roy, a graphic, web and logo designer based in Sydney, Australia. “There is nothing worse than bringing to life your vision … if it has all been done before. A small business owner is fighting for a small [piece of] real estate in a highly overcrowded market. Doing thorough research on who his competition is and how they project their brand image is the first and most important thing for a small business owner.”

2. What Makes a Company Logo “Sticky?”

If you’ve done your homework, it’s time to think about what kind of visual identities make a strong impression.

“The average consumer is fickle even in his loyalties, purely because of the sheer number of choices available to him,” said Roy. “Because a logo must be non-changing and timeless, making it ’sticky’ can be a bit ‘tricky.’ The perfect amalgamation of minimalism, well-thought-of concept, and strength in bold colors and typography — in my opinion — is what eventually makes a logo memorable and sticky for the consumer.”

“Avoid the predictable trends, forget about what others are doing, and create something that uniquely represents your business,” said Glitschka, and remember that “your actual business will be the ultimate draw, not the logo.”

“A logo that doesn’t preach; a logo that leads and adapts to the changing times; a logo that has heart and the ability to connect with the viewer can and always will cut through all the ‘noise.’” Roy added.

To achieve all this, you’ve got to hire a pro.

3. How to Find a Great Logo Designer

The best way to find anyone in a service industry is through personal recommendation. If a colleague has had success with a talented designer, make that connection.

For those starting from scratch, the web makes it easy to browse the portfolios of artists whom you can connect and work with from anywhere in the world. There are a few approaches that may yield results:

  • Browse or search portfolios on quality websites like Behance, Carbonmade, and LogoPond. Portfolio networks make it easy to cross-reference design styles and get in touch with artists that pique your interest.
  • Subscribe to design blogs like Smashing Magazine, Designm.ag, and Six Revisions (Disclosure: Six Revisions Founder and Chief Editor Jacob Gube is a contributing author for Mashable). The writers and contributors at these publications are usually designers themselves. If their discussions of branding and identity align with your business vision, look for portfolio and contact links in their bios.
  • Social media is often a great way to discover design experts with serious skill and clout. If you can’t get a referral from one of your Twitter or Facebook pals, use social media search tools like TweepSearch and Google Blog Search to find profiles with “logo design” and “branding.” Check out their feeds and websites. Do they appear to be well-respected and write authoritatively about their design expertise? If so, shoot over an e-mail and get a quote.

“Look for a designer who has a good grasp on marketing. Understands brand culture, has a proven methodology with other small business clients and a portfolio to back it up,” said Glitschka.

“One of the most important factors to consider when shopping for a pro logo/graphic designer is the style,” said Roy. “Each logo is different and the brand it represents may have very specific requirements. Look around to find a designer whose design style fits your needs.”

4. Translating Your Logo into a Social Web Presence

You’ve found a talented designer, and she’s produced the perfect logo for your business. What’s the best way to (re)introduce it into the social marketplace? A logo alone doesn’t make a brand, and the process of building a presence around that identity is no small feat.

“Any logo design should take into consideration from the very start the potential context it will live in,” said Glitschka. “If the business is geared for an online existence, then the design should be appropriate for that format. A tall vertical logo for a web-based business would be inappropriate for the context.”

And when it comes to the social web, try not to spread your identity too thin.

“Translating a logo design into a larger web/social media presence should be purely decided on need,” Roy added. “If your business doesn’t need it, don’t cheapen it by jumping on all kinds of media online and off the web. Have a good focus of where you want your brand to go and set your logo only along that focused path.”

In the end, Glitschka notes, it’s still your core business model that will determine “whether the logo will play a part in transforming a business into a larger web presence.”

If you’ve recently gone through the process of redesigning your small business’s logo, let us know which tips you’d add to the list in the comments below.

October 17-20, 2010, Scottsdale, AZ: SuperGlad describes the prosperous life of agencies on the right side of the digital marketing divide. The “have’s” have it. The “have nots” do not. For an agency, in-house digital marketing expertise is now a must, not a nice-to-have. And does the knowledge permeate the agency or rest with just one person operating as a stand-alone department (who, by the way, could leave you high and dry if something better comes along)? Digital marketing is a core competency of the “have” agencies. You might not need to execute on all of it but you need to understand it and drive the strategy upon which decisions are made surrounding it. BOLO 2010 takes on the big task at hand: explaining why digital media leads the charge in SuperGlad agencies. It is not an afterthought. It is dealt with using creative, media, traffic and account service employees who think traditionally first, then translate that thinking to a digital environment. This event will show you how. $799/person (or $599 for agencyside members). Use discount code mashable to save $125 (more than 15%) off full-price registration at any time.

Texting World Record Broken on Samsung Galaxy S

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 06:29 AM PDT

25.94 seconds. That’s how much time it took Melissa Thompson of Salford, England, to type a complex sentence on a Samsung Galaxy S, which makes her the new Guinness World Record holder for fastest typing on a phone.

The sentence for this particular record, as determined by Guinness, reads as follows: “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.” Before Thompson, Franklin Page of Seattle held the record, having typed the above sentence in 35.54 seconds earlier this year.

Interestingly enough, Melissa claims she’s out of shape as far as texting goes. She used to send a lot of text messages to her boyfriend Chris — 40 or 50 per day day, she says — but after they moved in together she hasn’t been texting as much.

But when Samsung invited her to have a go at breaking the world record, it turned out her fingers were in better shape than she thought; she texted faster than anyone else and by a large margin. The new world record still awaits official approval from Guinness, but if it turns out to be legitimate, the title of the world’s fastest texter will move from the U.S. to England.
