HOW TO: Put Facebook’s “Like” Button on Any Website

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 11:16 PM PDT

Facebook’s social plugins, especially its popular “Like” button, have spread across the web like wildfire. They were on 50,000+ websites within one week after launch, on 100,000+ sites in less than a month, and are now on 350,000+ sites.

There are still millions of web pages, blog posts and videos without “Like” buttons, though. What if you want to share one of those pages with your friends on Facebook? There’s an extension for that.

Facebook Like is a Greasemonkey extension that places a “Like” bar on the top of any webpage you visit (except for Facebook.com). It was built by Facebook Engineer Matt Kelly as a personal project during a company Hackathon.

“If you come across a site without the Like button, you can still use social plugins to share articles with your friends by installing the Facebook Like Greasemonkey script,” Facebook told us earlier today. “Built as a personal project by a Facebook engineer at one of Facebook's company Hackathons, the script makes it possible to have Like, Recommendations and Activity Feed features on any Firefox page you visit.”

Not only does the script allow you to “Like” any website, but it also includes the social plugin’s Recommendations and Activity Feed features. An important note: while the script was built by a Facebook engineer, it is not officially affiliated with the company.

Facebook Like works with Firefox as long as you have the Greasemonkey add-on installed. It also works with Google Chrome, since includes native support for Greasemonkey scripts, while Safari requires GreaseKit.

What do you think of the Facebook Like bar? Will you be installing the script? Let us know in the comments.

Mashable Readers Choose Real Books Over E-books

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 09:15 PM PDT

With the rise of e-book technologies such as the Amazon Kindle and Apple’s iBooks, are we finally witnessing the end of the printed word?

That’s the question we posed this week in our Web Faceoff series. We wanted to know whether you, the readers, prefer the digital technology of the e-book or still desire the feel of the paper in your hands. After over 2,000 votes…

…the printed word scored the victory! With 41.9% of the tallies (898 votes), the printed book was the clear favorite over the e-book’s 23.24% of the ballot (498 votes). Interesting enough, a lot of you voted that you like both formats for reading your favorite novel; 34.86% of you (747 votes) said that it was a tie between the e-book and the print book.

Do these poll results surprise you? Do you think the e-book will eventually overtake the printed book in popularity? Would that be a good thing? Let us know what you think in the comments!

HP Turns Its Back on Windows Phone 7

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 07:45 PM PDT

HP has confirmed that it will not be making phones with Microsoft Windows Phone 7, but will instead develop handsets exclusively with webOS, the mobile OS it acquired when it bought Palm earlier this year.

In an interview with CNBC, HP’s Todd Bradley, the executive vice president of the company’s Personal Systems Group, stated in no uncertain terms that “we won’t do a Microsoft phone.” This confirms recent reports that HP won’t be making Windows Phone 7 devices.

Here’s the quote in question from Bradley’s interview with CNBC’s Jon Fortt:

“As we continue to be Microsoft’s largest customer, and as we continue to believe that we will drive innovation with Microsoft, at the same time, I think it’s clear to say that we’re very focused on the customer and giving the customer the experience that’s important to them. We will not do a Linux/Android phone. We won’t do a Microsoft phone.”

Before its acquisition of Palm, HP said it would be a key partner for Microsoft’s renewed mobile ambitions. After all, HP is Microsoft’s biggest customer. After HP snagged Palm for $1.2 billion though, that tune quickly changed to “we’ve got to work with [Microsoft] to figure out exactly what the roadmap looks like.”

While it’s somewhat dangerous for HP to put all of its eggs in one basket, it’s a move the company simply had to make. It put too much money into Palm and webOS not to focus all of its resources into making webOS a contender against the likes of Apple and Google.

Avoid Waiting on Hold With LucyPhone [APPS]

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:50 PM PDT

This post is part of Mashable’s Spark of Genius series, which highlights a unique feature of startups. If you would like to have your startup considered for inclusion, please see the details here. The series is made possible by Microsoft BizSpark.

Name: LucyPhone

Quick Pitch: LucyPhone is a free web-based solution and new iPhone app [iTunes link] that helps users avoid waiting on hold.

Genius Idea: LucyPhone saves you from painful on-hold music by waiting in the customer-service queue for you and automatically calling your phone back when an actual human being picks up and is ready to talk.

I always dread having a problem with the cable or Internet or seeing some sort of error on my bank statement because I know that, in addition to the usual hassle of having to get those situations fixed, I’m going to be stuck on hold waiting for a customer service agent listening to some terrible Muzak, or even worse an FM radio station that keeps cutting in and out.

That’s where LucyPhone comes in. Here is how it works:

1. Using the app or the website, enter the number you want to dial, or in the case of the iPhone app, select from a list of 1,000+ businesses that are already populated.

2. Give LucyPhone the number you want to be called back at. Go through the phone menu system and when you get put on hold, press **. At this point, your phone call will end but LucyPhone will continue to monitor the call.

3. When the operator comes back, your phone will ring and you can start your conversation. Get put on hold again? Just press ** and you can go about your business.

This video shows off the service:

We love this concept. Not only is it a time saver, it’s a sanity saver. There’s no more keeping the phone on speaker so you can roam around trying to do something else, no more killing your phone battery because your estimated wait time is 45 minutes and you don’t have a charger handy, and no more Michael Bolton over a bad connection.

While the app can be used from your web browser (you’ll get a phone call connecting you to the number you want to reach), we love using the iPhone app because it has a built-in directory of phone numbers. From banks to insurance companies to consumer electronics vendors, you can select from the list of numbers rather than trying to scour the Internet or your product manuals.

You can use the service without an account, but if you sign-up for one (they’re free), you can track your hold-time minutes and add your own numbers to the app.

LucyPhone is only available in the U.S. and Canada currently, but the guys who founded the company plan on bringing it to the rest of the world. We think this app is a winner.

Our Favorite YouTube Videos This Week: The Hunger Edition

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 05:42 PM PDT

Are you currently salivating all over your keyboard, starving both for weekend joys and a home-cooked meal? Oh, man, aren’t we all?

Well, the Mashable staff isn’t much for cookery, but we have managed to gather together a rather succulent crop of YouTube videos this week for your consumption.

This week’s theme is hunger. Bon appetite.

Cookie Monster

Josh Catone: Who has the hunger? Cookie Monster has the hunger.

Hungry, Hungry Kitteh!

Amy-Mae Elliott: This hilarious clip is one of my all-time YouTube faves. Just how hungry is this poor little kitteh?!

The Mad Men School of Seduction

Louis Dorman: Feed the hunger. Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for a lifetime.

cows & cows & cows

Matt Silverman: Seems wrong to put this in the "Hunger" category. But it feels so right.

Food Fight

Ben Parr: The history of modern warfare since World War II...told in food format. It's really quite well done and, if you get some of the references, quite disturbing.

Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom Nom - Parry Gripp

Jenn Van Grove: Equally cute and annoying. Nom nom nom nom nom.

Hungry Hungry Hippos Commercial

Erica Swallow: You can't beat a day at grandma's house, playing Hungry Hungry Hippos with the family. Those were the days.

A Boy in Watermelon

Adam Hirsch: Baby eating a watermelon… Baby inside a watermelon… Who thought to put the baby there in the first place?

Man Man - "Rabbit Habits" [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO in HD]

Brenna Ehrlich: I heart Man Man, and this video contains werewolves. All-around win.

Live Concerts Come to YouTube and Vevo This Summer

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:50 PM PDT

VEVO and YouTube have taken another step to establish themselves in the online music space by announcing a partnership with American Express to launch a series of live-streamed concerts, "Unstaged: An Original Series from American Express.”

The five-concert series kicks off on August 5 with a performance by Arcade Fire at Madison Square Garden in New York. The concert coincides with the release of Arcade Fire’s new album, The Suburbs (which comes out August 3). Other performances will include The Roots and John Legend (both of which also have new albums this year).

This isn’t the first time that VEVO and YouTube have live streamed a concert with American Express — earlier this year Alicia Keys rocked out via the video site, as did Brooklyn’s The National. Actually, according to reps at VEVO, the success of The National live stream contributed to American Express’s decision to partner with VEVO and YouTube again for the concert series.

As you may recall, The National’s latest album, High Violet, leaked onto the web back in April, after which they streamed it on The New York Times’s website. That publicity, coupled with the live-streamed concert in May, (not to mention their growing popularity), may have contributed to their album’s success; they came in at number three on the Billboard Top 200 chart after one week of sales.

Sales aside, the show was a major undertaking for VEVO, YouTube and Co. Perhaps most notably, the whole webcast was directed by acclaimed filmmakers D.A. Pennebaker (Don’t Look Back, Monterey Pop) and Chris Hegedus (the Oscar-nominated The War Room, the upcoming Kings of Pastry). You can check the director’s cut at VEVO’s website.

In the meantime, I’m just going to embed the teaser that came out before the concert, which is done in the style of that famed Bob Dylan cue card sequence from Pennebaker’s Don’t Look Back. (‘Cause it’s cool and now I have an excuse to.)

This time around, the concert series will also feature the handiwork of several acclaimed directors, as well as a few other social media components, including “Choose Your Cam,” which will let the audience control their viewing experience by switching between the director’s stream and the second camera. Thusly, you can check out everything from front row footage to backstage goings-ons. There’s also “Digital Happenings,” which let artists collaborate with the online audience. During the Arcade Fire show, fans can send in pics of their own suburbs, which might be featured on stage during the performance (remember, the album is called The Suburbs). Surprise guests are also on the horizon.

As we reported yesterday with the launch of YouTube’s new music page, it seems that the video-sharing site and VEVO are really trying to carve out a competitive space for themselves in the online music realm. With the new music page, the duo was taking a crack at music discovery — this venture, though, seems like a direct hit on MySpace. MySpace, which has been doing live streams since early 2008, frequently features live concerts and events — such as Secret Shows like Hot Chip’s performance in New York a few months back.

Yet again, however, we wonder how YouTube and VEVO will fare in the music space — at least as an authoritative voice of any kind. As we noted yesterday, YouTube’s audience is so wide and varied that popular jams on the video-sharing site are often incredibly mainstream/familiar — Justin Bieber’s video for “Baby” is still tops. This series also seems to rely on tried-and-true bands — many have several previous albums and are relatively well-known. Therefore, it’s easy to see what audience the series is catering toward: the widest possible, which is all well and good when you’re an Internet titan.

Still, what’s lacking here is some kind of cohesion — i.e. Why these bands? Why now? What’s the purpose of this series? We know that this is the first such venture by VEVO and YouTube, and specialization will likely come, but it would be nice to see something along the lines of “Emerging Artists Across the Country” (YouTube’s partner program for musicians offers ample fodder), and perhaps a series of concerts centered around certain genres. Still, we’ll have to see what else is up their (record) sleeves.

Tab Candy: Firefox Invents a Better Way to Manage Tabs [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:19 PM PDT

Mozilla Creative Lead Aza Raskin has released Tab Candy, an experimental feature for Firefox that reimagines tabbed browsing through tab groups and reorganization.

In a post on his blog, Raskin introduced the new tab management system. Tab Candy is launched via a small button to the right of your tabs, but it packs a lot of functionality.

Here’s how it works:

- When you click on the Tab Candy button (or hit Option-Space on the Mac or Control-Space on Windows), it will take you to a tab overview page that lets you scan all of your open tabs.

- Tab Candy lets you drag-and-drop tabs into related groups. You can even name the groups for easier tab management.

- When you open up a tab, Firefox will only open up tabs that are part of its group. This means the end of the over-cluttered tab bar. You can switch your tab groups by going back to the Tab Candy overview page.

- Tab group sizes can be changed and groups can be rearragned so that important tabs such as your email and calendar are easy to find and scan.

Raskin says that this is only the beginning: features such as universal tab search, save for later, advanced tab memory management, automatic tab group assignments, multiple profile support and tab group customization are eventually coming to tab management tool.

Because Tab Candy is an early alpha prototype, the only feature this build includes is the tab group management. You can test it out now though through an early build of Firefox 4 Beta. Tab Candy is not an extension.

The web and the browser have evolved due to the rise of cloud computing and the creation of highly-functional web apps, but tabs have remained pretty much the same for the last few years. While extensions such as Tree Style Tab have addressed some of the issues surrounding tabbed browsing, they don’t redefine the experience as Tab Candy does. We’re going to be watching this project very closely.

Should Facebook Add a Dislike Button?

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 03:49 PM PDT

cnnopinion

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told ABC’s Diane Sawyer this week that Facebook would “definitely think about” adding a Dislike button to the site, allowing users to express distaste for updates or pages on Facebook.

A Facebook group for the concept has nearly 3.2 million fans, while there are at least two unofficial “dislike button” extensions for the Firefox browser.

But Zuckerberg is just humoring us: Facebook will never add a Dislike button, regardless of users’ demands.

That’s the topic of my CNN column this week.

New Music Video Lets Twitter Tell the Story

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 03:25 PM PDT

Singer-songwriter Evan Taubenfeld, who you may remember as the former lead guitarist for Avril Lavigne, released the music video for his song “Pumpkin Pie” yesterday. The song is the third single off Taubenfeld’s debut solo album Welcome to the Blacklist Club, but what’s most intriguing is that Taubenfeld used Twitter as the backdrop for all the drama and action in the video.

Taubenfeld’s music video plays out like a Twitter-driven love story — albeit one without a happy ending — and includes a smattering of tweets and TwitPics, all of which are real. Even tweets from celebrity artists like Pete Wentz and Courtney Love make their way into the video.

The Twitter-focused video seems like a natural progression for Taubenfeld. The musician is an avid consumer of all things social media. As such, you can find him on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr and Justin.tv. In fact, Taubenfeld tried to take over Twitter’s trending topics yesterday with a big #pumpkinpievideo hashtag push in honor of the video’s debut.

Whether Taubenfeld’s music is your taste or not, you have to admit that the 25-year-old certainly seems to be in tune with the social media predilections of his fans and supporters.

10 Great Behind-the-Scenes Glimpses of Google [VIDEOS]

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 03:20 PM PDT

Our fascination with Google — and what it's like to work there — continues as we take you inside for a look behind the scenes.

We've all heard stories about the free food, dog-friendly offices, and wacky decor. And guess what — it’s all true. We’ve carefully curated 10 videos that reveal a glimpse of life at Google, from locations as varied as Australia, Russia and even Wisconsin.

So, if you've ever wondered what it's really like to be a Googler, these cool clips should give you a little bit of insight…

1. Life at the Googleplex

This official Google vid offers a tour of Google HQ (a.k.a. the "Googleplex") in 200 seconds. Most interesting snippet of info? There are more than 200 dogs on campus on any given day. Woof!

2. Google - Best Place to Work 2007

Offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse into Google from an NBC news report's perspective, this clip was shot just after Google had been named America's best place to work by Fortune back in 2007.

3. Google's New Zurich office

Google's Zurich office is up there as one of the top premises in terms of wackiness. Here, Web User Magazine has a little nose around -- be sure to keep watching to the end for a quick look at the old fashioned library room.

4. Inside Google's New York Office

The New York offices look just as sweet as Google's Silicon Valley headquarters. The building in the Big Apple has the second largest footprint of any NYC structure -- so big that the Googlers get round on scooters, leaving them in special scooter "parking bays." Watch out for the LEGO wall and really cool floor map.

5. Inside Google Australia

There aren't a lot of revelations in this Aussie clip (the usual colorful offices, look at all the food and oooh, there's a ping pong table) but it goes some way to show that Google manages to keep its wacky office set up even 7,000 miles around the globe.

6. Google Office - Madison, WI

While it's hardly Google's most famous office, the Madison, Wisconsin location adds a good dose of the usual Google zaniness and manages to incorporate some of the building's history into its decor -- truly a unique workspace for all those lucky Googlers.

7. Google Chicago Headquarters Tour

WGN News gets a tour of Google's premises in the windy city where we find out just how those "Recent Searches" displays in Google's lobbies remain so smut-free.

8. Google's Chicago Games Room

And -- as we didn't see this in the previous tour -- here's a look at the cool game room within the Chicago complex. It's like your dream lounge, but with more geeks.

9. Google in St. Petersburg

An insider look at a Google office in Russia transcends any language barriers, although what's with all the soft toys?

10. Google Container Data Center Tour

Google isn't just about the colorful offices and crazy fun. It's also about the million or so servers that keep us Googling. Here Google opens the door to a data center in a somewhat dry video that will no doubt be fascinating to anyone in the industry!

VH1 Promotes Foursquare in New Ad [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 01:54 PM PDT

Bravo, The History Channel and now VH1 believe in the power of Foursquare so much so that they’re broadcasting television ads to promote their presences on the platform.

VH1 is the latest cable network to hop on the Foursquare train. It has created a Foursquare spot that is set to run for the remainder of summer and into the fall season.

The “Unlock It to Rock It” promotion encourages VH1 fans to use Foursquare for access to insider tips from VH1 and celebrities on the best bands and music venues.

The commercial in question also mentions a VH1 badge that Foursquare users can unlock by checking in to music venues. Participants who unlock the badge will also be entered in a sweepstakes for a chance to win one year of unlimited shows at a Live Nation venue.

With an array of television networks now heavily promoting Foursquare, it’s no wonder the location-based mobile checkin game surpassed 100 million checkins this week.

YouTube Launches New HTML5-Friendly Embed Code

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 01:43 PM PDT

The YouTube blog has just posted about a new video embed style that uses <iframe> and will eventually provide a more robust experience for users across browsers and devices.

The big advantage of this new embed style is that it can serve content to users using either Flash or HTML5, depending on where the video is being viewed and the preferences of the user. The new embed code is still being tweaked, but developers are encouraged to use it and give YouTube their feedback.

Back in January, YouTube rolled out its HTML5 player, and support for HTML5 has since continued to expand and evolve. However, not all video is viewable in HTML5 in all browsers, and sometimes content needs to use the Flash player.

That’s why the new embed code has so much potential. Right now, the HTML5 player only works on the YouTube site itself. The standard embed code doesn’t display the HTML5 video unless you are on a mobile device that is able to either play in-line or take you to a separate player.

With the new embed, however, it is possible to view video using the HTML5 player, provided you have signed up for the beta version and are in an HTML5-compatible browser. If the embedded video has elements that aren’t compatible with HTML5, the Flash browser will be used instead.

If you want to try out the new player, this is the embed code you want to use. It replaces the VIDEO_ID text with the code from your video (the string after v= in the standard YouTube address):

<iframe class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="640" height="385" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID" frameborder="0">

Eventually these embeds will make viewing on mobile devices much easier in in-line situations. Right now, some videos will play in-line on an iOS or Android device, but more often than not the video is played in its own player.

As a test, I loaded the announcement page on my iPhone 4. Initially, I was shown a black screen instead of the video content. After enabling HTML5, however, the following appeared:

In essence, I was still unable to get the video to play. It looks like all of the bugs haven’t yet been resolved on the mobile side, but I did at least get one step closer.

What do you think of the new embed system and its potential?

Amazon’s Exclusive New Publishing Deal Threatens to Fracture E-book Market

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 01:08 PM PDT

The Wylie Agency has signed a deal to bring the e-book editions of 20 classic titles, including Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita and Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man, exclusively to Amazon’s Kindle Store for two years, the company announced Thursday.

Publishers were, unsurprisingly, less than pleased. Today, Random House declared in a statement that the trade publisher would “not be entering into any new English-language business agreements” with the agency, which represents such illustrious authors as Martin Amis and Salman Rushdie, “until [the] situation is resolved.”

“The Wylie Agency's decision to sell e-books exclusively to Amazon for titles which are subject to active Random House agreements undermines our longstanding commitments to and investments in our authors, and it establishes this agency as our direct competitor," a spokesperson for the publishing company said.

The problem is that it’s still unclear — at least to Random House — who has the rights to publish the electronic versions of older titles, whose contracts don’t specify those rights because e-books simply didn’t exist when they were drafted. Random House sent a letter to literary agents in December 2009 asserting ownership of those rights, citing clauses in older agreements that allow the company to publish texts “in book form… in any and all editions.”

Agents and authors were surprised to receive the missive, given the outcome of a lawsuit between Random House and RosettaBooks LLC in 2001. According to the WSJ, Random House tried to prevent the latter from selling the e-book editions of works by William Styron, Robert Parker and Kurt Vonnegurt Jr.; the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York ruled in RosettaBooks’s favor, claiming that Random House’s earlier contracts didn’t cover e-books. A federal court of appeals affirmed the decision.

The Future of E-book Distribution

The latest dispute between the Wiley Agency and Random House is, then, just one in what promises to be a long line of disagreements — and not just about older titles. Perhaps inevitably, authors and their agents will increasingly make deals directly with the likes of Amazon and Barnes & Noble’s e-book division to distribute the electronic versions of their work.

Several, including Stephen King, already have. The bestselling suspense author released his most recent novel, Blockade Billy, as an e-book one month before releasing the hardcover version in the U.S. and Canada. He also distributed a short story, "UR," exclusively through the Kindle Store in February 2009, shortly after the Kindle 2’s release.

Most recently, widely read Japanese author Ryu Murakami revealed his plans to publish his next novel on the iPad, stepping around his publisher and securing a greater share of the sales revenue in the process. According to Fast Company, publishing houses typically offer authors and agents 25% of the net proceeds of e-book sales. By releasing his novel directly in Japan’s App Store, Murakami and his partners will receive up to 70% of sales proceeds; undoubtedly, bestselling authors could negotiate with Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. for even more lucrative deals.

It thus makes sense that authors and literary agents wouldn’t want to fork over e-book rights to their traditional publishers, when they could potentially profit more by making deals directly with e-book retailers. And traditional publishers are of course worried, as e-book sales are making up an increasingly greater share of overall sales; earlier this week, Amazon revealed that it is now selling more e-books than hardcover books.

What This Means for Consumers

In the end, however, it’s the consumers who will suffer most. While it’s great that 20 works of classic contemporary literature are now available in electronic format for Kindle owners, it’s not so great for those with a Nook, or one of Sony’s or Borders’s low-priced e-readers.

Unless different arrangements are made, consumers can expect a frustrating future in e-book purchasing, in which popular titles and authors are made available only on certain platforms — at least until a set number of copies are sold or period of time elapses, at least. Amazon and its ilk will offer increasingly competitive deals to secure top selling authors, and users will have to toggle through an array of apps and devices to download the books they are looking for.

As Devin Coldewey of Crunchgear cheekily suggests, consumers may return to the “portable, DRM-free, region-agnostic” paperback for convenience’s sake.

Who do you think is in the right here, Random House or the Wylie Agency? Do you think the dispute and other recent developments bode well or poorly for the future of the publishing industry? Share your thoughts in the comments.

How CrisisCommons Is Helping the Tech Community Help Others

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 12:17 PM PDT

crisiscommons image

Geoff Livingston co-founded Zoetica to focus on cause-related work, and released an award-winning book on new media Now is Gone in 2007.

The CrisisCongress took place last week in Washington, DC. The event, a convening of more than 80 tech-savvy leaders from five countries, aimed to create social media-based solutions to help communities facing disasters like the recent Haiti and Chile earthquakes. Solutions have ranged from CrisisCamps to wikis, and are comprised of veterans from the non-profit aid group CrisisCommons.

The Congress, gathered in its own camp format, looked for better ways to provide aid to both governments and citizens faced with crisis. Moderated by Allen Gunn, a veteran of more than 1,000 camps, the Congress discussed a wide variety of topics, including what worked in the past, possible legal structures, mission statements, and how to better embrace international cultures. Here’s a look at the roots and future of CrisisCommons through it’s very first Congress.

Why CrisisCommons Works

congress image

CrisisCommons has inspired a huge swath of people from various global communities to come together to help. Whether it’s a hardcore coder building the Oil Reporter mobile app, a member of the Ushahidi team, or a social media communicator, people with different skill sets connect and work without any personal agenda to achieve solutions that make a difference.

“First, we need to recognize that disasters have a way of bringing people together with a desire to help, whether it's the Haiti earthquake or the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami,” said Andy Carvin, senior strategist at NPR and a CrisisCamp co-organizer. According to Carvin, it helps that the structure of CrisisCommons makes it familiar to the tech community. “Grassroots events like Barcamp and Podcamp have become very popular in the tech community, so when we announced our intention to have our first post-Haiti CrisisCamp, the concept made sense to many of the very people we hoped would participate.”

Within a year, CrisisCommons launched and built a dedicated community spanning 10 countries. Almost all of the original networking began online via social media tools, migrated to CrisisCamps, and eventually the Congress itself. According to Gael Musquet, charge d etudes, Departement Amenagement du Territoire in France, the reason the Camps were able to enjoy so much far-reaching success so quickly was that they were structured in a way where everyone could emulate everyone else, and learn from each other’s successes. “It is based on the power of the Internet to show what we are doing, and how we are doing that,” he said. “That helps people to reproduce the methods of groups who have succeeded, and realize the same things in different cultures with the different languages. For me, things like wikis and Twitter represent the power of the Internet.”

While social media has been instrumental in the success of organizing the camps, social media also plays to the speed necessary to create and deploy applications to the field during a disaster. “Crises and emergencies are incredibly precarious situations,” said Sloane Berrent, author of the Causemopolitan blog. “In New Orleans, we created a CrisisCamp in less than a week. In order to do that, we needed the community to come together. In today's environment, that community includes online. Social media played a natural role in the recruitment and retainment of volunteers.”

Defining its Mission

aid image

The Congress was designed to maximize CrisisCommons’ ability to assist in the event of future disasters or humanitarian issues. Creating applications and tools for unique crises requires more than just getting a room of willing coders and communicators together. It requires government and NGO support, as well. One of the major goals of the Congress was to help the organization better prepare in advance of the next disaster or humanitarian crisis, rather than simple scrambling to react when disaster hits.

“[CrisisCongress] is our first step: Being in a room together talking about what happened and what's next,” said Heather Leson, CrisisCommons founder, Canada. “[We're] Creating non-crisis events in advance by region, and locally to be ready for the next one. I am choked up by the fact that we are planning preparedness in our regions/countries for the next disaster or crisis. We are building our communities based on experiences from hosting CrisisCamp Chile and Haiti.”

CrisisCommons is also looking to learn from past mistakes and experiences. “In many ways we're preparing for the next Haiti simply by learning how to organize these events and hosting them again and again,” said Carvin. “Meanwhile, some of our projects have disaster preparedness in mind as well as disaster response. For example, our CrisisWiki.org project is designed so that anyone can add disaster-related resources to the wiki at any time … Then, if there's a disaster nearby, it's easy to pull together the resources, because many of them have already been curated there.”

However, the future holds some challenges for CrisisCommons. The hardest part is moving from survival to sustainability, said Berrent: “CrisisCommons will have to look beyond the next crisis and into their own three to five year future. [The] structure around building community chapters, working with international governments, and creating sustainable revenue models are serious endeavors…”

Musquet said that the biggest challenge was still to support younger countries unprepared for major disasters. With a growing organization committed to doing good, the challenge is one of bureaucracy and of scalability. “How do we keep our early starters and manage these diverse voices?” Leson asked. “Diversity in voices is important. I am excited for the journey.”

5 Color Case Alternatives to Waiting for a White iPhone 4

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 10:27 AM PDT

Today, Apple announced further delays to the white iPhone 4 release, dashing the dreams of would-be white iPhone 4 owners everywhere. Never fear, thanks to the power of silicon and plastic, you can add some color to your black iPhone and get some antennagate protection at the same time.

While some industrious modders have taken the DIY approach, we figure most individuals will feel much more comfortable putting a case on their new devices. While none of these solutions offer a full 100% white iPhone 4 effect, you can get pretty close.

Check out the gallery below to preview our picks of slim-fitting iPhone 4 color cases.

1. Colors by SwitchEasy

SwitchEasy has a solution for the iPhone 4 owner who wants to add some color to their protective options. You have your choice of 9 different colors and the case covers the back, the sides and the home button of the iPhone 4. You even get a set of connector covers for the headphone jack and the dock connector.

The home button has been given a special "Jelly Bean" tactile feel that is supposed to make it more responsive than other covered case solutions.

Price: $14.99

2. NUDE by SwitchEasy

For iPhone 4 owners that want a case that is as thin as possible, but still want some protection and a little bit of colored fair, check out the NUDE from SwitchEasy. Available in eight different colors, the case covers the sides and the back of the device.

Plus SwitchEasy provides two screen guards, a microfiber cloth and two sets of covers for the headphone jack and dock connector. I recently ordered a black NUDE case for my iPhone 4 and I love it.

Price: $19.99

3. Belkin Grip Vue for iPhone 4

The Belkin Grip Vue is a slim cover for your iPhone 4 that also offers protection. You can get it in clear, black pearl or royal purple. The material is flexible and durable and designed, as the name implies, to help you easily grip your device.

Price: $24.00

4. Belkin Shield Eclipse

The Belkin Shield Eclipse is an interesting case because it's clear and hard on the top, but softer to the touch and durable at the bottom. That makes it easy to hold but also resistant to bumps and scratches.

Belkin offers the case in four colors, including blue, purple, black and white.

Price: $29.99

5. iPhone 4 Candy Slider

The Hard Candy Candy Slider is designed to offer protection for the sides and back of your device that is easy to slide on and slide off.

Available in five different colors, the soft-touch plastic adds a bit of color and some protection to your iPhone 4.

Price: $34.95

Employees Ignore Social Media Policies, Play “FarmVille” on Company Time [STUDY]

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 10:11 AM PDT

Cisco’s 2010 Midyear Security Report found that workers in the enterprise are accessing their favorite social networking sites on company-issued equipment even when corporate policies prohibit them from doing so.

In fact, 50% of surveyed employees confessed to ignoring company social media policies at least once per week. 27% of respondents went the extra mile to reconfigure the settings on corporate devices so as to access forbidden content or applications.

The Cisco report primarily focuses on network security. On that front, it concludes, “Social networking, virtualization, cloud computing and a heavy reliance on mobile devices continue to have a dramatic impact on the ability of information technology departments to maintain effective network security.”

The social networking side of the report is especially interesting. The research sheds light on how the popularity of games like FarmVille is contributing to lost productivity during the workday and introducing new security risks.

7% of the sample who access Facebook at work, “spend an average of 68 minutes per day” playing FarmVille. Mafia Wars and Cafe World also proved to be extremely distracting; the former is played by 5% of survey participants for an average of 52 minutes per day, while the latter (4 % of the sample) spend 36 minutes each day on game play.

Social networking at work is not all fun and games. On the issue of new security risks, Cisco warns, “Social networks remain a playground for cybercriminals, with an increasing number of attacks. New threats are now emerging from a more dangerous criminal element: terrorists.”

The full report is embedded below. Section 10 focuses on social networking in the workplace.

40+ Web Design and Development Resources for Beginners

Brian Casel is a web designer and owner of ThemeJam WordPress Themes and CasJam Media. You can follow Brian on his blog at BrianCasel.com or on Twitter @CasJam.

It's no secret that web design is a fast-growing industry. Virtually every type of business is in need of a quality website. There are opportunities at the large agency level down to freelancers developing small-business websites from home.

So how do you break into this exciting field? With little or no experience creating websites, getting yourself up to speed can be a daunting task. There are so many different avenues of design and development to explore. Which way should you go first? Which skill sets suit you the best?

We aim to give you an overview of a few things things that are essential to a well-rounded knowledge of web design. These are starting-points, if you will. Below each item, we’ve listed additional resources for you to continue on in your learning process.

Before we get into it, heed one important lesson: You can't become a professional web designer overnight. It takes years to reach an expert level in any aspect of the field. But everybody starts somewhere, and there's no better time than the present begin your web design education.

HTML & CSS

These are the building blocks of every web page you see. Yes, HTML and CSS are two different things, but they are completely dependent on each other. You can't learn CSS without understanding HTML. You can't build an HTML website without using CSS. Let me explain:

HTML is short for “HyperText Markup Language.” It makes up the building blocks of a web page. The language is composed of "tags," which define various elements on the page. For example, a paragraph of text is wrapped in a paragraph tag, like so:

<p>Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Vivamus eu mollis mauris.</p>

CSS is short for “Cascading Style Sheets.” CSS is used to add style and formatting to your page elements. If HTML is the framework of your house (the foundation, the beams, the bricks), then CSS is the presentation (the paint, the furniture, the decor). The concept of writing CSS is to add definition to an HTML tag, like so:

p {
color: #0000ff;
font-size: 12px;
margin-bottom: 18px;
}

The above CSS code defines all paragraphs to be blue text color (represented by the color code, #0000ff), have a font size of 12 pixels, and have a margin below each paragraph of 18 pixels.

Additional resources:

  • W3Schools – An excellent reference and learning resource for HTML and CSS.
  • W3C Validator – A tool for checking your HTML and CSS to ensure it complies with professional standards for programming — otherwise known as "valid code."
  • A List Apart – A fantastic website about all things web design, with a focus on web standards.
  • Net Tuts – An excellent resource for web development tutorials.
  • Designing With Web Standards – One of the must-read books on web design, written by "The Godfather" of web standards, Jeffrey Zeldman.
  • CSS Zen Garden – Both fun and amazing at the same time. See what types of design possibilities are possible just using CSS.

Photoshop and Fireworks

adobe image

Whether you're a designer, a coder, or both, you will undoubtedly be working heavily with one of these graphics programs. Adobe Photoshop has been the long-time champion of web design, photo editing, and print design.

Adobe Fireworks is a popular alternative to Photoshop. Fireworks is intended to be used specifically for web design, while Photoshop is more of a jack of all trades.

Whether you're going to be designing websites from scratch, or you’re tasked with programming a website designed by someone else, you need to know your way around these programs. You’ll need to understand the concepts of layers, selections, and saving images for the web.

Additional resources:

Design for the Web

grid image

For many folks, the first thing that comes to mind when you think about web design is programming. But what about design? Effective design for the web is arguably the most important aspect of this craft, yet it's often overlooked by beginners.

Even if your focus is to become a programmer, it's still important to have a basic background in design principles as this will help you to relate and collaborate with designers more effectively. Here are a few topics that are well worth your time to read up on:

Grid Design – The process of aligning page elements to an evenly spaced (invisible) grid, which makes for an aesthetically pleasing design.

Web Typography – The art of arranging type, fonts, line spacing, and anything else that relates to the presentation of type content. On the web, there are many factors which affect this, such as varying screen resolutions and designer font serving technologies.

Usability – This is the process of designing a user experience that promotes interaction and eases the user through the site navigation and action flows. This is also related to information architecture (IA), and user experience design (UX). Here are some related resources:

Design Inspiration – Every designer needs inspiration. There are tons of sites dedicated to listing outstanding web designs for you to browse through and formulate new and interesting ideas. Here are a few of our favorites:

A Content Management System

wordpress image

Once you have a solid understanding of the basic principals of web design, you will eventually work on projects that require a “Content Management System” (CMS). These systems provide the ability to manage website content using a friendly interface, rather than editing code. It's great for setting up websites for clients who want to run it themselves.

There many types of content management systems to choose from. Some are best used for blog or portfolio-type websites, while others are geared to provide E-Commerce functionality. Some are free to use, others are commercial products, while others have both free and paid options. Many CMS systems are self-hosted solutions, meaning you install the software on your own server. Others are hosted solutions, meaning you pay to store and manage your content on their server.

It's best to focus on just a few in the beginning, and explore more options as you become more experienced. Here are a few we recommend looking into:

WordPress – It has traditionally been known as a blogging platform, but has evolved significantly into a more robust CMS. Check out these WordPress resources on Mashable:

Drupal – A very popular alternative to WordPress. Great for a site that requires many custom content types.

ExpressionEngine – Another popular CMS. Unlike WordPress and Drupal, ExpressionEngine is not an open-source project (you have to pay to use it).

Magento – This is an E-Commerce system, meaning it provides the ability to manage products, have a checkout process, and other common features you'd find on a shopping website.

Shopify – Another popular E-Commerce system. This one is a hosted solution, which means you pay to store all your products and website files on Shopify's servers.

This list is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many systems out there worth considering. I recommend finding one that has as strong community around it to turn to for support, plugins, and other extensions.

A Final Word of Advice

palettes image

Network and never stop learning. Follow anyone involved in web design on Twitter. Subscribe to as many relevant RSS feeds of web design blogs. Try and learn a new thing every day. Over time, all the pieces will start coming together and before you know it, you'll be on your way!

I will leave you with a list of tools I've found to be extremely useful in my day-to-day work as a web design professional. I highly recommend you check these out:

FireBug – A must-have FireFox extension, which allows you to inspect the HTML and CSS of any web page. You can tweak code on the fly and instantly pinpoint areas in your code which need editing. Great for troubleshooting display issues.

FileZilla – A free FTP client for Mac and PC.

Panic Coda - This is my code editor of choice. It's only for Mac. I highly recommend it.

Colour Lovers – A site for browsing and choosing color schemes.

MeasureIt – Another FireFox extension. This one helps you measure pixels on any web page. Very useful when perfecting your page layout dimensions.

Google Analytics – This is the go-to tool for tracking your website traffic.

Lipsum – This site generates "Lorem Ipsum" text, or placeholder text for mocking up websites before actual copy is swapped in.

Comp Fight – A Flickr photo search tool. Great for quickly finding images to use in your web design mockups.

VMWare Fusion – A mac application which allows you to run an installation of Windows on your Mac. This is helpful when testing websites across all browsers (something you should always do!).

The Double Rainbow Guy Goes on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” [VIDEO]

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 08:40 AM PDT

Recently, a viral meme came full circle as Paul “Bear” Vasquez (a.k.a. The Double Rainbow Guy), made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, a TV show hosted by the man who prompted Vasquez’s unlikely stardom.

Over Fourth of July weekend, a viral video burst onto the scene that took the world by storm — or rather the calm after the storm, punctuated by a glorious double rainbow. In it, a tearful man goes absolutely insane over the natural phenomena. Vasquez, the vid’s star, made the video back in January, but it didn’t take off until Kimmel tweeted about it in early July. Now, nature-lovin’ homeboy has been interviewed by many a reporter, and several spin-offs of his iconic vid have hit the web.

Kimmel recently had “Bear” on the show, where they talked about rainbows, women, a previous appearance Vasquez made on the program, and whether or not the YouTube star was intoxicated during the famed freak-out. Vasquez says he was completely sober, but copped to smoking up before some of his other videos. It’s OK, though, folks — he’s got a prescription. Yeah…

The interview is in two parts. Check it out below:

Part One

Part Two

On another note, I know it’s the summer doldrums, folks, but can some please bust out with a new meme? Seriously, the staying power of this particular viral phenom is indicative of the Internet masses’ collective hunger for something amusing at present. Something to blast away our ennui and rocket us toward novelty nirvana. So, denizens of YouTube, I implore you, teach your toddler to crip walk or something. For the good of humanity…

The Wait for the White iPhone 4 Continues

Posted: 23 Jul 2010 06:58 AM PDT

As of last week, the white version of the iPhone 4 was still on track to ship at the end of this month. However, for the second time, the device has been delayed, with Apple issuing a brief statement this morning saying that it "[continues] to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected."

Apple now offers only the vague "they will not be available until later this year" as a potential arrival date.

With a lack of clarity around the date, you probably want to avoid buying a black iPhone 4 in hopes of exchanging it later (if you're super committed to getting white anyways). As Mashable's Christina Warren noted the first time white iPhone 4 was delayed, customers only have 14 days to return the device, except in California, where they have 30 (though customers unsatisfied with the device can also return it for a full refund as a result of antennagate).
