Choose Your Own Adventure Comes to Twitter Posted: 22 Mar 2010 05:36 AM PDT As if Twitter weren’t enough of a time-sink, Jonah Peretti of Buzzfeed and Huffington Post fame created a choose your own adventure game using only Twitter (and lots of Bit.ly links.) In case you aren’t familiar with choose your own adventure games, it’s basically a written work which allows the reader to make choices that affect the storyline, creating a tree-shaped narrative structure. You enter a dark cave: do you want to a) explore the cave or b) turn away? Depending on which one you choose, you’ll be sent to a different page in the book, and the story continues. The Twitter variant of the game starts here; we won’t spoil it for you, of course, but be prepared to faced dangerous foes and die a couple of times in the process. |
iPhone Font is Not Very Readable, Still Amazing Posted: 22 Mar 2010 01:24 AM PDT First, we’ll tell you that it took the author – self-described as someone with too much free time – 540 iPhone apps to create this font. Second, we’ll tell you that it’s not all just pretty pictures: he actually used iPhone apps in different colors so he can show off the font live, directly off his iPhone. Not impressed yet? Then check out the video below, and the entire iPhone alphabet a little further below. While you probably won’t be writing long letters with that font, it’s still a beautiful sight to behold. You can find an even bigger version of the font sheet over at the author’s website. *Update: as some commenters noticed, “W” is missing. It was probably impossible to do with just four columns of apps. Tags: apps, design, font, iphone, mobile apps |
Zerista Offers Mobile-Optimized Social Media Tools for Groups Posted: 21 Mar 2010 10:47 PM PDT DEMO Spring 2010 officially kicks off on Monday morning, but at the welcome reception earlier tonight, we got a chance to meet with some of the companies that will be presenting their products over the next two days. One of those companies is Zerista, which is a tool that lets groups, clubs, teams and organizations build their own mobile optimized applications. Think of it as a private Facebook/Foursquare/Twitter mash-up. What we like about Zerista is that it can integrate with your existing social networks, while also creating a web-based (and mobile optimized) network for communicating news, sharing messages, doing mobile check-in and even collecting payments for tickets or dues. You create the application and provide details about who your members are, any custom maps you want to include (that can replace generic Google Maps) and any activity calendars or events. You can also select what type of privacy and sharing options you want — so you can designate if communication shared in the group is also shared outside to other networks or to the public at large. While some might not see the point in building a custom social app, we can already think of several situations that would really benefit from such a system. For instance, I was in a sorority in college and trying to track down meetings, locations for philanthropy events — not to mention collecting dues — was something that even in the early Facebook era wasn’t well optimized. Having a mobile-accessible network that can be private — but also integrate with large public networks would make that management process less complicated and also make it easier for group members to find out what’s going on and communicate with one another. Zerista is open for beta now. Reviews: Facebook, Foursquare, Google Maps, Twitter Tags: demo, demospring10, mobile apps, social media, social networks, zerista |
“Baby Killer” Becomes Healthcare Vote’s “You Lie” [VIDEO] Posted: 21 Mar 2010 09:29 PM PDT On Sunday night, the House of Representatives passed a $875 billion healthcare bill with a vote of 219-212. While discussion of the news is currently dominating the social web, a specific moment from the proceedings is also getting attention – a member of the House yelling out "baby killer" as Rep. Bart Stupak was speaking. According to Trendistic, about 0.4 percent of all tweets from 11-12PM ET contained the phrase (about 2 percent included "HCR" – the acronym for healthcare reform). The moment is reminiscent of back in September, when Rep. Joe Wilson shouted out "You Lie!" during a speech delivered by President Obama. At this point, it's not known who uttered the "baby killer" comment. Whoever it was though will likely become something of Internet lore – Wilson's outburst made him the 7th most discussed person on Twitter in all of 2009 and has been the subject of numerous video parodies and mashups (he had the misfortune of having an outburst around the same time as Kanye West). The “baby killer” comment can be heard at around the 7 second mark in the video below: Tags: bart stupak, healthcare reform, Joe Wilson, video, viral video, youtube |
Posted: 21 Mar 2010 06:02 PM PDT Today is Twitter’s fourth birthday, and to celebrate the occasion we asked our Twitter followers: “Let us know how Twitter changed your life – add hashtag #thankstwitter4 so we can find your tweet.” We got thousands of responses — in fact, #thankstwitter4 has become a trending topic. Steve Jobs Replies: No, iPad Won’t Support Picasa Posted: 21 Mar 2010 02:16 PM PDT Steve Jobs seemingly elected to reply to another question sent to his SJobs [at] apple.com email address yesterday, this time in response to a question about support for Google’s Picasa photo sharing service on the iPad: In short: no, the iPad won’t support Picasa albums or face recognition … and Jobs takes the opportunity to point out that iPhoto does a better job in his opinion. 9to5Mac, which first posted the thread, confirmed the authenticity of the mail by the mail headers. How do you get Steve Jobs to respond to your emails? We’ve no idea, but a couple of Apple fans seem to have had luck in recent weeks. Reviews: Picasa Tags: email, steve jobs |

New Twitter Phishing Attack: “You’re On Here?” [WARNING] Posted: 21 Mar 2010 12:09 PM PDT Twitter users are reporting a new attempt to extract their usernames and passwords — a Direct Message attack that asks “You’re on here?” with a link. Others report DMs linking to a site called “mhansenhome” with the message “’someone posted on their blog about you”. The advice is straightforward: if you get such a message on Twitter, DO NOT click the link or enter your login details on the landing page. If you find you’re sending out these DMs to friends, change your Twitter password. Twitter recently took steps to combat phishing by introducing its Twt.tl URL shortener — links sent via DM now appear as “‘twt.tl” links in your email notifications, allowing Twitter to re-route malicious links to a warning page in some cases.
