Posted: 27 Mar 2010 10:57 PM PDT The Apple Store has been down for an extended period tonight, according to Twitter reports. While such downtime sometimes precedes a new product release or price changes, that seems somewhat unlikely here: Apple would never release a big new product on a Saturday night, one week before its big iPad release. So, we’re not banking on any major revelations when the store comes back up … except maybe an iPhone 4G with lasers. UPDATE: After a few hours of downtime, the store is back online. Chatroulette Piano Improv #2: Merton Returns [VIDEO] Posted: 27 Mar 2010 07:22 PM PDT The Chatroulette piano improv guy is back — and his lyrics are as good as ever. Merton, the pianist who wrote on-the-fly songs about people he saw on Chatroulette, has posted a second video today with even more great improv pieces. Will the Chatroulette fad never fade? Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week [CHART] Posted: 27 Mar 2010 03:10 PM PDT Justin Bieber’s imperial reign over the Twitterverse remains uncontested for the fourth straight week, thanks to the release of his new album “My World 2.0″ and the recent arrest of his manager. Our friends at What The Trend have crunched the numbers for us, and provided a week-long measure of what’s been hot on Twitter. Because this is a topical list, hashtag memes and games have been omitted from the chart below. “Follow Friday” (at number two) and “Music Monday” (at number eight) make their regular appearances as staple, user-created Twitter memes. Third on the chart this week is “Health Care Reform,” as the U.S. House of Representatives voted in favor of a bill to overhaul the U.S. health care system and provide coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. The controversial bill was signed into law by President Obama on March 23rd, though the Congressional process was not without its drama. A new meme, “I [heart],” made its way up the charts, as people tweeted about their favorite things in any category. And “March Madness” (at number five) rolls on this week as a number of upsets have been rocking basketball fans’ NCAA brackets. It was Twitter’s birthday last week, and the name of the social network itself came in at number six, with people tweeting their love for the service. Our own hashtag, #thankstwitter4, made the rounds, as we asked users how the micro-blogging site changed their lives. You can read 140 of the best responses here. Michael Jackson jumped back into the week’s trends at number seven, as fans tweeted about their memories of his music and performances. News about the ongoing investigation into his death also spurred some Twitter buzz. Two entertainment items round out the week. The Korean boy-band Super Junior saw another surge in fan tweets after the group performed in Malaysia. And coming in at number 10 is a strange discussion about the Oxygen network’s show Bad Girl’s Club. Natalie, one of the show’s stars, apparently has a chin so unusual, it warranted a week’s worth of chatter on Twitter. You can check past Twitter trends in our Top Twitter Topics section as well as read more about this past week's trends on What The Trend. Top Twitter Trends This Week 3/20 – 3/26

10 Must-See Google Street View Sightings Posted: 27 Mar 2010 01:39 PM PDT While we brought you 15 amusing Google Street View sightings when the service launched back in 2007, in the last few years Google has expanded its coverage around the globe, which also means expanding the chances of humorous photo captures. Here we bring you ten more funnies from around the world — from the amazing (a three-legged man!), to the cute (Paddington Bear!), to the downright odd (scuba-suited sunbathers!). Have a browse below of the small selection of strange imagery that can be viewed via Google’s ambitious photographic project to snap the world, and do let us know which ones are your favorites in the comments. 1. Three-Legged ManA three-legged dog walks into a bar and says, “I’m lookin’ for the man who shot my paw…” While you’re groaning at that, check out this tripedal Sicilian taking an extra-limbed stroll down the street. View Larger Map 2. Paddington BearWaving endearingly at the camera, British children’s favorite Paddington Bear makes an appearance in London outside the British Museum. He looks pretty happy, greeting passersby curbside, and he is most decidedly not giving anyone one of his trademark “hard stares.” View Larger Map 3. Shark AttackAnyone browsing around Headington, Oxford, UK in Street View will get a surprise when they turn onto New High Street (as would anyone doing the same in real life) thanks to the 25-foot long fiberglass shark sticking out of the roof of number two. Locals will note it is in fact a well-known landmark originally created as a statement about nuclear weapons. View Larger Map 4. Marching BandThis too-good-to-be-true scene is in fact just that. Part of a project from artists Robin Hewlett and Ben Kinsley in conjunction with the Street View team and residents of Pittsburgh’s North Side, this marching band is one of a few tableaus set up to introduce some fun fiction into the service. View Larger Map 5. Thieving Sea GullAlthough there are plenty of birds captured on Street View, this image of a sea gull in Brighton, UK has amused plenty of browsers, as it looks like it’s just managed to steal a tasty morsel from some poor unsuspecting passerby. View Larger Map 6. Scuba DudesWhy these two fellows sat bathing in the Norwegian sun in full scuba gear is anyone’s guess, but they didn’t stay seated for long after the Google Street View car passed — if you head East on Rugdeveien and turn the camera around, you can see the two take chase after the vehicle, complete with pitch fork. Maybe that’s just how they roll in Bergen. View Larger Map 7. Doc Emmet BrownFrom the same folks who brought us the marching band, here we see what looks like Doctor Emmet Brown (of Back to the Future fame) tinkering away in his garage with — could it be — the flux capacitor? Of course it’s not, but you could certainly use this to win a bet with a gullible friend. View Larger Map 8. Sherlock HolmesHow did fictional detective Sherlock Holmes end up waving to the Google Street View car in Cambridge, UK? Elementary, my dear Watson, he was apparently one of Google’s secret Easter eggs planted for the occasion. View Larger Map 9. Trip WireThese mischievous kids were caught red-handed by the Google Street View voiture as it cruised through France. While we suppose there could be an innocent explanation, it seems more likely some unwary monsieur is about to land face-first in the street. View Larger Map 10. Google PhotocallA suitable image to end on, Google staffers hit the streets to celebrate as the Street View vehicle came rolling past their offices. You can pan down the road to see crazy costumes, banners and props all dragged out street-side for the special occasion. iPad to be Sold at Best Buy on Day One? [PIC] Posted: 27 Mar 2010 12:19 PM PDT Apple appears to have run out of iPads for shipping on launch day, but iPad buyers might have another option: a leaked image (above) from Best Buy appears to show that the retailer will stock iPads at 675 of its stores on Saturday, April 3. Apple had already announced that iPads would be available at Best Buy, but few expected the sales to begin on launch day. If the image is real, it suggests a new mainstream approach to product launches by Apple. It might also go partway to explaining why Apple has already run out of iPads for delivery on launch day.
Posted: 27 Mar 2010 11:33 AM PDT If you’re looking to pre-order an iPad today, you’ll notice that shipping dates have been pushed back to April 12th. What’s more, Apple has removed the option to pick up your iPad in-store. It appears Apple simply can’t supply the demand for the first week of iPads, writes Planet iPad (via 9to5Mac), suggesting high demand for the device. How many iPads have been sold so far? Some estimates say around half a million – a higher demand than many expected. If you’ve pre-ordered an iPad for in-store pickup, you’ll still be able to get that between 9am and 3pm next Saturday. After 3pm, Apple stores will sell all the iPads they have on a first come, first serve basis, writes Fortune.

HOW TO: Support Earth Hour With Social Media Posted: 27 Mar 2010 08:50 AM PDT The World Wildlife Fund’s now annual Earth Hour campaign is great way for individuals to take a stand against climate change. Something as simple as switching your lights off for one hour can make a visual statement of your support for the global sustainability movement. Begun back in Australia in 2007, last year’s event saw such world famous landmarks as the CN Tower in Toronto, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, and The Eiffel Tower flick the switch on their illumination, not to mention the millions of people across the world who did the same on a smaller, but no less important scale. Earth Hour 2010 takes place today, Saturday, March 27th at 8:30 p.m. your local time. As well as turning your lights off for the allotted time, here are some other social ways you can show your support for Earth Hour. 1. On TwitterA global “lights off” event is planned for everyone’s favorite micro-blogging service Twitter with a click-through app you can activate now that will automatically turn the lights off on your Twitter profile picture for Earth Hour. The app auto-tweets out a get prepared message to your followers as you activate it, and will do the same when the hour begins. You can also add an Earth Hour “Twibbon” to your Twitter avatar. 2. On FacebookJust like the Twitter lights off option, there’s one available for Facebook too created by Fennek & Friends. As with the previously mentioned version, this one-click app will turn the lights off your profile picture at the correct time. Another Facebook option is an app that installs a virtual light switch — one that’s customizable, as well as shareable — which can be found via the “light switch” tab on Earth Hour’s Facebook Fan Page. 3. On Your WebsiteYou can create and embed a virtual lantern on your website with some simple HTML code, available to copy and paste here. There’s another embeddable widget from Call2Action that can also be posted on your website or blog, or can be e-mailed or shared via the usual social networking channels. 4. On FlickrThere’s a dedicated Earth Hour account on the photo sharing service Flickr that will show pictures of various lights out ceremonies. Don’t forget to subscribe now and check back for some great shots when the lights come back up. Tagging your own relevant pics “earth hour” on the site will add them to the pool. 5. On YouTubeThere’s a great Earth Hour YouTube channel that offers some amazing clips from years past. They include both overview videos about the movement, and footage from individual events around the globe. Subscribe, watch, and be inspired to get involved and spread the word!
