NASA’s First iPhone Game: Lunar Electric Rover Simulator

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 05:33 AM PST

Ever dreamed of controlling your own Lunar rover? Keep dreaming, buddy; there’s no way NASA is ever gonna let you do it (even if they send a new rover to the moon in the near future, which they probably won’t). But you can control a simulated one with NASA’s first iPhone game: the Lunar Electric Rover Simulator.

Controlling the rover is quite a simple affair, but you’ll be able to finish various challenges and learn a lot about the Moon and how the Lunar rover works in the process. There’s also an interactive gallery with images of the rover and the Lunar Outpost it supplies. It may have been canceled (postponed?) in real life, but they cannot cancel it in our hearts.

You can get it for free in the App Store.

Twitter ‘LOL’ Phishing Attack Turns Into Spam Wave

Posted: 22 Feb 2010 01:43 AM PST

Yesterday we wrote about a new phishing attack on Twitter, which lured unsuspecting users into giving away their Twitter credentials. The compromised accounts were then used to spread the attack further via direct messages containing text such as "lol, is this you", “Lol. this is me??”, “lol , this is funny” etc.

IT security firm Sophos now has detailed info on the attacks and a video describing them, which we’ve embedded below.

After the first attack wave, however, the phishers are now using the compromised accounts to send out spam, which resulted in a huge amount of Viagra-related messages on Twitter, which read something similar to this: “Get bigger and have sex longer. go here”, followed by an address that leads to a sexual enhancement site.

Once again, if you see unusual messages (similar to the examples above) sent from your Twitter account, it may mean it has been compromised, and you should change your Twitter password immediately.

Bloom Box: Bloom Energy Powers Your Whole House with a Box [VIDEO]

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 08:18 PM PST

Silicon Valley doesn’t just produce innovative web companies — it’s also a mecca for the green tech boom. Bloom Energy, which launches officially on Wednesday, has built a refrigerator-sized box that can power your whole house.

Bloom Energy has actually been operating for 8 years, raising $400 million in funding from VCs including Kleiner Perkins (investors in Netscape, Amazon, Google and others). Its “Bloom Box” houses fuel cells that run on oxygen plus natural gas, landfill gas, bio-gas or even solar.

The company’s first customer was Google, which has been powering a datacenter on 4 Bloom Boxes for 18 months. Google’s boxes run on natural gas. eBay is also a customer — the company has 5 Bloom Boxes in San Jose, which it says have saved $100,000 in energy costs over 9 months.

The Bloom Box got its first TV appearance on CBS’ 60 Minutes tonight, which will no doubt drive interest in the launch. Look out for more news on Wednesday.

What do you think? Could Bloom Boxes power the future?

HOW TO: Block FarmVille on Facebook

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 05:21 PM PST

The Facebook-platform game FarmVille has 80 million players. It’s been named social networking game of the year. It’s played by people young and old. It’s bigger than Twitter. But that doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.

The game optionally advertises itself by sending out news feed updates to your friends whenever you accomplish a milestone with your farm or character. When you have lots of friends playing FarmVille, those updates can be ubiquitous enough to drive you a little crazy.

Here we’ll save your sanity by showing you how to hide all those FarmVille news feed updates and notifications without burning any bridges with your passionate social gamer friends.

Hiding Friends’ FarmVille News Feed Updates

This task is simple. Any time you see a FarmVille update in your news feed, move the mouse cursor to the right of the update and a “Hide” button will appear as seen above. Click on it.

As illustrated above, you’ll then be given the choice to either hide that friend or just the FarmVille app. Since you probably want to keep seeing your friend’s updates (we hope), click “Hide FarmVille.” This will hide FarmVille news feed posts from all your friends, not just the one who published that particular update.

Blocking FarmVille Notifications

Sometimes friends will send you notifications inviting you to join them in FarmVille or other games. These can be annoying if you’re not interested in playing. The easiest way to take care of this is to click the “x” next to the notification when you receive to block the FarmVille application.

But if you want to do this preemptively without waiting for another notification, just search for the FarmVille application using the Facebook search bar, go to the application page, and look for the “Block Application” link directly below the application image. We’ve included a pic above so you’ll know what you’re looking for.

Clicking that and confirming will prevent FarmVille from accessing your information or sending you notifications, but it won’t hide news feed updates from friends.

7 Mind-Blowing Free Android Apps

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 02:46 PM PST

cool android imageSmartphones can do some amazing things these days, and the Android Market has quickly become a sandbox for some clever developers, as well as Google Inc. itself.

We’ve already touched on some popular Android apps for Twitter, some for news, and some great multiplayer games, but not all apps have a specific purpose. Some are just interesting, amazing, or too cute not to keep in your back pocket as a conversation starter.

Utility be darned, here are seven free android apps that are just plain cool.

1. Floating Image

If you’ve lost your passion for Android’s bare bones built-in photo gallery, check out the Floating Image app that will breathe new life into your snaps, as well as pull in some great shots from around the web.

There’s not a whole lot of utility here, but it’s a really sharp looking way to show off your photos or discover some pretty ones from Flickr. You can even score a new home screen background by long-pressing any of the images that float by.

This one is all about the animation, and this video demo shows it off well.

2. Google SkyMap

Google SkyMap is an armchair astronomer’s dream come true. Using data from Google Sky and your GPS coordinates, the SkyMap app becomes a handheld window unto the heavens. As you move your phone across the night sky, you can see real-time information on the stars, celestial objects, and constellations as you pass them. You can also disengage the compass view and float freely through the galaxy with your finger, browsing the celestial map or searching for objects at will.

3. Google Goggles

We’ve certainly covered the release of Google Goggles before, but it’s hard to over-stress just how cool this project is. In essence, it’s a visual Google search which utilizes your handset’s camera. Simply view your surroundings through Google Goggles to get an augmented view of the stores and landmarks in your area, or snap a photo of a product or some text to get relevant search results.

In testing, Goggles didn’t recognize the Nike swoosh (one of the simplest and most well-known U.S. logos), but it did know where I was without GPS, and identified a complex logo for Coca-Cola, the American flag, and my DVD of High School Musical 2 [Extended Edition], promptly directing me to Amazon.com where I could purchase a second copy.

Google is also hoping to implement text translation into Goggles, which is not available yet, but is expected in future updates.

4. Talk To Me

talk to me android image

Talk To Me is an impressive app that can translate your input text or speech between over 40 different languages, and in most cases, speak the translations back to you. The interface is really dead-simple: An input for text, a drop-down list to choose your languages, and a big green button to activate the speech recognition.

You can even set it as a home screen widget. Simply tap the button, speak a phrase, and the app will speak it back to you in Spanish, German, French, and many other languages that use Roman characters. Support for many Asian languages is included, but currently only provides textual translations.

The speed and ease of translation has a pretty big cool factor, but this is one app on the list that may also be very useful for tourists or those studying a new language.

5. MovieFone

If you’re out with friends and still on the fence about which flick to catch and where, gather ’round the old Nexus One and fire up the new MovieFone app, which is a great way to get film details without ever touching a mobile browser.

The app, developed by AOL Mobile, gives you all the data from moviefone.com in convenient Android form, including synopses, coming attractions, theater listings based on your location, and perhaps best of all, full trailer videos built right in.

6. Android Lightsaber

Android Lightsaber Image

If you simply must get your nerd on, the Android Lightsaber app, which is officially sanctioned by LucasArts, brings the power of the Force (or a Force-like substance) into the palm of your hand. Choose between five different Star Wars characters, each with their own unique saber color, then tap the screen to unleash your weapon.

Swing your handset for the classic wooshing and buzzing sounds. Your lightsaber will flash and crackle as you spar with invisible foes. Perhaps the best part is the 1-click epic music that you can switch on in the midst of your imaginary battle.

7. BubbleBeats

BubbleBeats is brand new in the Market and injects some much-needed creativity into Android’s music library. The concept is difficult to explain, but it essentially creates a visual landscape for your music collection by way of multicolored, animated bubbles.

Each bubble represents a song that you add to the canvas. Resize and group your bubbles however you want — perhaps a gathering of red rock songs on the left, some blue blues bubbles on the right — and float around your custom bubble-scape, playing your favorite tunes at will simply by tapping their corresponding bubbles.

This one’s certainly not for everyone. Finding and arranging music on this sort of interface can be difficult. But it’s a unique way to visualize your collection, and experiment with a new approach to the playlist. Check out the developer’s video below to see what I mean.

Google Buzz Not a Twitter or Facebook Killer, Says Google Exec

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 12:37 PM PST

GMAIL USERS: You’re welcome to join the discussion over on Mashable's Google Buzz account.

Google Buzz is not a rival to Facebook or Twitter, says Google exec Bradley Horowitz — instead he sees it as a platform for conversation, and hopes other services will be able to flow in and out of Buzz.

In an eWeek interview earlier this week, Horowitz, Google’s VP of product management, was asked whether Buzz was intended as a challenger to Twitter and Facebook. He replied:

Absolutely not. Per what I just said, this is creating a new category of communication. It’s filling a niche, which is not currently met in the market. I think something unique is happening on Buzz that will continue to evolve. It’s hard to create a trend line or extrapolate too much from six days of use, but certainly conversation and the conversational Web is a place where Buzz has excelled. I think it is unique and offers a compelling interesting experience.

Conversation is Key

Horowitz also explained that Buzz goes beyond updating your status (like Twitter) or checking in (like Foursquare) — it’s about engagement:

It’s not just status-casting. It’s not just checking in. It’s really meaningful interactions around meaningful topics within Buzz and it’s reaching the right audience and people are engaged. That kind of value proposition is I think unique to Buzz. I’ve heard that again and again. In the realm of positive feedback, I think that people are finding that the conversational mode of buzz is very, very powerful and the quality of audience is also great.”

Buzz: An Open System

Google’s plan, it seems, is to create an open platform for social messaging, such that Google Buzz is integrated with services all around the web. Horowitz aims to create the “most open, well integrated, well behaving social network in the industry”.

This technical openness could create the kind of developer stampede that made Google Maps, Twitter and Flickr take off. The only unknown is whether technical openness could be in opposition to the private nature of our email inboxes.

How do you use Twitter, Facebook and Buzz? Let us know in the comments.

HOW TO: Deal With Negative Feedback in Social Media

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 10:49 AM PST

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

We often say that social media is a conversation, and what we mean by that is unlike traditional broadcast and print mediums, which are often one-directional, social media is very much a two-way channel. Not only can businesses communicate with their customers, but their customers can communicate with them and with each other, as well. By and large, this type of communication is a good thing — businesses can form more personal relationships with customers and customers can become part of a community around the brands and businesses they want to support.

However, when you open the conversation up to anyone, you can also potentially invite negative criticism that you need to be prepared to deal with. Here’s a quick guide to dealing with negative feedback on social media.

Identify the Type of Feedback

The first step to dealing with negative feedback is determining what type of feedback you’ve received. Negative feedback comes in a few different flavors, each of which is best dealt with by a different type of response. Determining which type of feedback you’re dealing with is an essential first step toward figuring out what is the appropriate response.

Straight Problems – Someone has an issue with your product or service and has laid out exactly what went wrong. This type of feedback is negative in the sense that it paints your business in a poor light, but it can be helpful in exposing real problems that need to be dealt with.

Constructive Criticism – Even more helpful is when the comment comes with a suggestion attached. Many customers — including some of your most loyal — will use social media to suggest ways in which you can improve your product or service. While this type of feedback may point out your flaws, and is thus negative, it can be extremely helpful to receive.

Merited Attack – While the attack itself may not be merited, the issue that catalyzed it does have merit in this type of negative feedback. Essentially, you or your company did something wrong, and someone is angry.

Trolling/Spam – The difference between trolling and a merited attack are that trolls have no valid reason for being angry at you. Also in this category are spammers, who will use a negative comment about your product or service (whether true or not) to promote a competing service.

Decide How to React

Once you’ve figured out which type of feedback you’ve received, your next step is to determine the type of response necessary. The number one rule when responding to all criticism, even the negative type, is to stay positive. Adding more negativity to the conversation by letting yourself be drawn into a fight with a customer or user will only reflect poorly on your business.

When dealing with Straight Problems, a response is almost certainly necessary. Whether that response is personal or a broad public-facing message depends on how widespread the problem is and how many people reported it. Regardless, if a real problem exists, steps should be taken to fix it and customers should be notified that those steps are being taken. Remember that there will be times when such criticism is the result of a perceived problem rather than an actual problem (e.g., someone who just doesn’t like the method by which you do something). Even this type of complaint should be given a response, if only to say, “Thanks for bringing it to our attention, but here’s why we do it that way.”

Similarly, Constructive Criticism also requires a response. Certainly there will be times when you won’t want to implement the suggestion given — probably most times you won’t — but you’ll build loyalty and trust by responding to criticism with a positive message. It is well worth the effort to thank those consumers who took the time to provide you with a suggestion or point out your product’s flaws.

Merited Attacks are a bit tougher to deal with, because they’re more likely to feel personal. You should always try to keep in mind that this type of feedback, as harsh as it may be, has a basis in a real problem. It is best to respond promptly and with a positive vibe (e.g., thank the commenter for the feedback and assure them that steps are being taken to correct the issue or mitigate their problem, such as offering a partial refund).

The final category is the only category of negative feedback that does not require a response. In fact, it is almost always best not to respond to Trolling or Spam. This type of feedback isn’t really feedback at all. It is designed either to bait you into an unnecessary and image-damaging fight, or to siphon off your customers using underhanded tactics. You should always ignore this variety of feedback, and when appropriate, remove it as soon as you spot it.

Video Chat Coming to iPad and iPhone? [PICS]

Posted: 21 Feb 2010 09:33 AM PST

Further evidence has emerged that Apple’s iPad and iPhone may support video chat in future versions.

Icons in the iPhone 3.2 Software Development Kit are labeled “Accept Video” and “Decline or End Video”, reports 9to5Mac.

Meanwhile, code in the iPad’s telephony apps also includes mentions of video chat. 9to5Mac concedes that Apple may have re-used code from its Mac software in the 3.2 SDK, but adds there would be no reason to create video chat icons for the iPad unless this was a feature.

The rumor supports previous reports that future iPhones/iPads will have a front-facing camera, and the discovery of code for “toggling a video call between full screen and a smaller screen area” in the SDK.
