“Star Wars” Saga Goes Blu-ray in 2011 Posted: 14 Aug 2010 07:28 PM PDT George Lucas announced today that all six Star Wars films will make their HD home theater debut on Blu-ray disc in fall next year. The box set will include the Special Edition remastered version of the original trilogy. Lucas made the announcement at Star Wars Celebration V, the official convention for the movies and their related properties, and the 2011 launch for the Blu-ray discs will mark the 35th anniversary of the release of Episode IV: A New Hope, the first Star Wars film. The discs will include documentaries, interviews, outtakes, deleted scenes and other footage unique to the new set. The Star Wars films are among a number of killer apps that could encourage movie buffs who’ve been sticking to standard definition DVDs to finally buy Blu-ray players. Advocates of the Blu-ray disc format should be thrilled that this new incentive to adopt the format is finally arriving, but some Star Wars fanatics will be less than pleased that the controversial Special Editions are the only versions of the original trilogy that will be available. Lucas’ explanation: The original theatrical editions would cost too much to convert to the high definition format. Much of the needed work was already done for the Special Edition remasters. Will you be buying Star Wars on Blu-ray, or will you skip it and watch the 3-minute LEGO version instead? Twitter Allows Tweets Longer Than 140 Characters (By Accident) Posted: 14 Aug 2010 05:42 PM PDT If you’re crafty, you can now publish a tweet longer than 140 characters. It’s not a feature but rather a bug of course, so don’t expect it to be possible for much longer. We first read about the bug in the Twitter Development Talk Google Group, where forum user Chris White posted a step-by-step of how to make it happen. He wrote that you go directly to the Twitter Share URL (http://twitter.com/share?url=) in the Firefox web browser and put your tweet’s text after “url=” — for example, “http://twitter.com/share?url=This is a test of the Twitter 140 character bug.” The result is a tweet box with a shortened http://t.co/ link (that’s Twitter’s URL shortener). Then you can just click the tweet button and the full-length tweet will go out on your account. It will display properly on Twitter’s website, but many third-party web, desktop or mobile apps will fail to show the whole message. Twitter user TenhoMania published a tweet that included the entire first chapter of the book of Genesis from the Hebrew Bible — not a wholly original idea at this point, but special for its 3,000+ character length, at least. That and several other lengthy tweets have been retweeted numerous times. Twitter employee John Adams posted a thanks to Chris White on Google Groups for exposing the bug, and said “I filed a bug with our webclient team,” so a fix is sure to come in the very near future. Update: Twitter just fixed it. Tweets now display properly or not at all. Gap Offers 25% Discount for Foursquare Checkins Posted: 14 Aug 2010 03:35 PM PDT Gap is cutting 25% from the prices for all the clothes in its retail stores for customers who check in on Foursquare in connection with an event the chain is calling “The BlackMagic Event.” The Foursquare deal is only valid today, so you’d better grab your smartphone and head to the store soon if you want some cheaper-than-usual family clothes. The same discount is available to Twitter and Facebook users, but Facebook users have to print out a coupon and Twitter users have to offer up a discount code at the cashier. If you go the Foursquare route, you just have to check in at the store, though we’re not sure how the cashier knows about it; maybe he or she has to look up your user name, or maybe you actually have to show them your phone? The Foursquare/Fashion connection isn’t totally fresh; Ann Taylor offered 25% off to Foursquare mayors and 15% off to each customer on his or her fifth check-in. These deals are great for Foursquare, and the theory is that they’re great for retail stores because those Foursquare users’ friends would see that they’re checking in, giving the stores some exposure. Foursquare has also started sending out stickers to businesses to remind customers to check in whenever they walk in the door. Top 10 Twitter Trends This Week [CHART] Posted: 14 Aug 2010 11:22 AM PDT If you think teens aren’t a chatty demographic on Twitter, think again. We’ve seen many teen culture trends hit the top of the charts over the last few months, and this week, Fox’s Teen Choice Awards dethroned Inception, which had carried the top spot for nearly a month. The explosion of chatter from the World Cup seems to have left its mark on Twitter, as the regular goings-on in the football world have rarely left the top topics since the end of the tournament. Movies continue to trend solidly during these summer months, and the week-long Muslim holiday of Ramadan made a strong showing as observers tweeted their spirituality from all over the world. The best news for long-time Twitter trend fans? The legendary Justin Bieber appears to be back with some new staying power, thanks to a cadre of Twitter-happy “Beliebers.” Have a look-see at the complete chart below, compiled by our friends over at What The Trend. Because this is a topical list, hashtag memes and games have been omitted from the chart. You can check past Twitter trends in our Top Twitter Topics section as well as read more about this past week's trends on What The Trend. Top Twitter Trends This Week: 8/7 – 8/13
