Lady Gaga Beats Obama to 10 Million Facebook Fans Posted: 03 Jul 2010 07:10 PM PDT Lady Gaga is the first living music artist to acquire 10 million fans or “Likes” on Facebook, beating U.S. President Barack Obama by around 700,000. She reached the milestone earlier this weekend. Gaga previously made headlines for being the first currently producing music artist to reach one billion YouTube views, based on data provided by video analytics company Visible Measures. The late and great Michael Jackson still has Gaga beat in both categories. (He has almost 15 million fans on Facebook.) The Facebook page for Lady Gaga is regularly updated by either her or a ghost writer (it’s hard to tell these days), as is her Twitter account, which has more than 4.5 million followers. The online success of the artist’s music videos was due in part to the excellent strategy executed by cross-label music video site Vevo, but there’s no denying that the extravagance and style of Gaga’s videos have been essential. Previously, Gaga’s Facebook fans organized “National Lady Gaga Day.” The accompanying Event had more than 100,000 attendees. Is this getting out of hand? You’d be well within your rights to say so, but at least 10 million people are bound to disagree. Follow the 2010 Tour de France With Bing Maps Posted: 03 Jul 2010 04:17 PM PDT Looking for tools to help you follow the 2010 Tour de France? Microsoft has built an app for Bing Maps that visualizes the various stages of the race and provides information like weather and results. You can see the routes the cyclists are taking on the map, including important points like the beginnings and ends of stages. Weather forecasts, distances and times are provided for each stage, and results are updated in their own tab as they come in. Microsoft has also put an elevation profile over the map. Just move your mouse along a route to see where the climbs and falls are. Most techies have made Google Maps their default destination for maps and directions, but Microsoft’s Bing Maps has tried to challenge Google by building specialized apps and tools for events and interests. For example, Bing has given users access to Foursquare data, and added an app that grants the ability to stargaze from street level. Mashable launched the Local Twitter Trends app for Bing Maps about a month ago. Do these special apps have a shot at drawing you away from Google? I’ll Have to Google That [COMIC] Posted: 03 Jul 2010 02:54 PM PDT Friend Me is a social media comic published every week by Natasha Wescoat. Before Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said that privacy was dead, Mashable founder Pete Cashmore was already sounding that call. We’ve put so much of our lives on the web through social media that anyone can read up on our back-stories with just a simple Google search. That’s great for hiring, networking, business and many other uses, but in some situations, it might not be the best idea. Case in point: Find more “Friend Me” comics at artcandy.tv, or read last week’s comic: “Hungry for Power.” Reviews: Facebook, Google, Mashable More About: comic, facebook, friend me comic, Google, privacy For more Social Media coverage:

Top 10 Geekiest Marriage Proposals Posted: 03 Jul 2010 12:32 PM PDT Will everyone please rise for the bride and geek! Here at Mashable, we enjoy a good wedding, but we also enjoy a good proposal too — especially if the happy couple show their love in the geekiest of ways. We’ve scoured the Internet for the finest examples we could find of the geeky marriage proposal; and they involve video games, gadgets and even Google Street View. Take a look at our collection of super-cool geeks who made that extra effort to incorporate their passion for tech and online life into securing the all-important “yes” from the person they love. Be sure to let us know your favorites in the comments below. 1. Super MarioThis sweet geek used FuSoYa’s Lunar Magic Super Mario hack to pose a proposal to his girlfriend spelling out “Lisa… will you marry me?” in gold coins. That’s one way to get the princess! 2. iPhone AppLinkedIn employee Bryan Haggerty developed an entire treasure hunt iPhone app for his elaborate proposal that sent girlfriend Jeannie around San Francisco with her route forming a <3 symbol on a map. Once Jeannie had solved all the video clues she found Haggerty atop a hill waiting to pop the question. 3. Little Big PlanetOne of many video game proposals, this was made slightly easier (as in no hacking necessary) with LittleBigPlanet’s level creation functionality — but that does not make this effort any less romantic. 4. iPodThis lucky girl gets the geek, a sparkly diamond ring, and an iPod with this proposal that took advantage of Apple’s engraving option in a pretty major way. 5. Chrono TriggerIf you read the description on this video, you’ll see that some serious work has gone into this super-romantic hack that adds notable locations, quotes and characters (including the cat!) from the couple’s real life. Aw! 6. Google Street ViewGoogle employee Michael Weiss-Malik wasn’t satisfied with his proposal 1.0 (“simple heart-felt words exchanged during a quiet night at home”), so the 2.0 version took advantage of Google’s Street View pass near the Google offices. Sadly, it has now been replaced with updated imagery, but the memory lives on. 7. MegatouchThe company behind the Megatouch bar games system went the extra mile to help this Washington gent propose to his special lady via her fave Megatouch game. They even caught the moment on (shaky-)cam. 8. TwitterIt’s by no means the only Twitter proposal, but this might be the first via the micro-blogging site. The reply was a “yes,” although with a big “um” and an “I guess” thrown in. Maybe she was hoping for an iPod. The next couple to get engaged on Twitter was @maxiesler and @emilychang. Kielser, a San Fransico web designer, popped the question to his girlfriend of 15 years, and almost instantly she responded; yes! And Mashable’s own Christina Warren had the question popped to her by blogger boyfriend Grant Robertson, who tweeted that he couldn’t wait a minute longer, so he told the entire world that he wanted to marry @film_girl. Naturally, she accepted with a sweet tweet. 9. iPhone AdHere, the familiar iPhone ad format was given a more romantic marketing message in the hope of a special push of the “answer” button. Check out the Cover Flow demo near the start — we think that might have given Doris a clue as to what was to come. 10. LOLcatsPosted on Valentine’s Day, here is the very first I Can Has Cheezburger proposal. Fans of the funny site will be happy to note Loretta’s answer was delivered via the medium of LOLcat too.
