Apple’s Multi-Touch Trackpad Leaks Ahead of WWDC? Posted: 07 Jun 2010 03:22 AM PDT Later today, at Apple’s annual WWDC conference, Steve Jobs will likely announce the next iPhone, but it’s probably not going to be the only new announcement from Apple. Now, another new gadget has become very likely to show up, as Engadget has some pretty convincing images of a device that seems to be designed to give iPad-like, multi-touch functionality to desktop and laptop computers. The device is a very simple trackpad with an Apple logo, an on/off button and little else, and it probably connects to other devices via Bluetooth. The images don’t tell us much, but if the device is real, it means that Apple is really serious about finger-based multi-touch input, perhaps even considering it to be equally as important as the keyboard in the near future. The iPhone Now Also Runs Android 2.2 [VIDEO] Posted: 07 Jun 2010 01:26 AM PDT The quest to bring every version of the Android operating system to the iPhone continues. We’ve seen the iPhone 3G running an older iteration of Android before, but now clever hackers have managed to install the latest version, Android 2.2 or Froyo, on that same device. We don’t recommend trying this out – not only because it’s potentially dangerous to your iPhone, but also because Android 2.2 doesn’t work very well on the iPhone. Currently, WiFi and audio don’t work, which pretty much kills the deal. Still, if you want to see Froyo in action on the iPhone, you can check out the video below. Facebook Censors Content, Bangladesh Lifts Ban Posted: 06 Jun 2010 06:13 PM PDT Bangladesh ended its ban on Facebook today after the social networking company agreed to block access to the images that the government deemed offensive, according to the AFP. Depending on which region’s news outlets you trust, the ban was imposed either because of “obnoxious” images of prominent Bangladeshi politicians, a user-hosted Facebook group that encouraged members to participate in a competition to draw the Prophet Muhammad, or both. Many Muslims deem any visual depiction of Muhammad to be blasphemous. As we predicted, Facebook blocked access to the controversial images for users within Bangladesh, but they remain accessible for users in other countries — except Pakistan, which had also blocked Facebook access but restored it earlier this week for the same reason. One man was arrested in Bangladesh over the political cartoons, but the Muhammad contest group originated outside of Bangladesh. Bangladesh’s one million Facebook users will be relieved to have access to the majority of the social network restored; protests were organized after it was first blocked. Posted: 06 Jun 2010 04:37 PM PDT Fact: there are more iPhone and iPod touch cases in the world than there are ants. Okay maybe not, but there are certainly more than there are pandas. If you want to stand out from the crowd, or turn your back on the retail onslaught of ready-made options, then we’ve rounded up five designs that you can make yourself. Our tried and tested DIY mini-projects include a few eco-friendly options that reuse existing items. And no homemade round-up is complete without a quacking Duck Tape design. Craft on! 1. The Odd Sock CaseWhat you’ll need: Overview If the sock monster has got one of your socks, then this case makes use of the lonely survivor. Although it does require a bit of needle and thread action, it’s dead simple to make. Simply lay your iPhone on the sock, and mark a line on the sock an inch below the bottom of your iPhone. Make sure the sock is long enough, so that the line is above where the heel of the sock begins. Cut off the bottom of the sock below the line. Then, turn the sock inside out and sew a seam. Using a sewing machine it’s a two minute job, or by hand a little longer — but just think how much it will hone your stitching skills. Mods include adding some kind of fastener at the top, such as a button. A handy tip for anyone who’s sewing skills aren’t that hot is to use a horizontally striped sock — sew along a line to help you get the seam straight. 2. The No-Sew Felt CaseWhat you’ll need: Overview The boast of “no glue, stitches, or staples required” was what initially drew us to this design. What the pitch failed to mention is that it’s actually a little bit of an exaggeration. While it’s easy enough to print out the template and cut the fabric to size, the folding-to-keep-it-closed method didn’t quite work for us. If you try this at home, we’d suggest making this design sewable or glueable to help it stay closed. 3. The Duct Tape CaseWhat you’ll need: Overview Using good old-fashioned duct tape and a thick plastic CD or DVD sleeve, you can muscle yourself up a manly iPhone case in a jiffy with this design. All you have to do is cut the CD sleeve to fit your iPhone and then cover it methodically in tape, making sure to leave a gap for the screen and make a flap to fold it closed. What’s really neat is that the plastic cover holds a tiny static charge, so you can control your iPhone or iPod through the case, so this could really come into its own when the weather is wet. 4. The Juice Box CaseWhat you’ll need: Overview This design takes a common juice box (or “carton” in some countries) and upcycles it into an eco-friendly case for your iPhone. The theory goes that you open up the box, lick it clean, stick in some velvet or felt as extra protection, and then fold, glue and sew it until it resembles something from the designer’s Flickr set. Ours is a slight variation on the original. We like to pretend that’s because we took the design and made it better, but the truth is it’s quite tricky to make, and that’s just how it turned out. 5. The Book CaseWhat you’ll need: Overview Although the concept of a book safe has been around for eons, we got the actual iPhone-related idea from Wired, which made a case from a Moleskine notebook. We could not bring ourselves to destroy such a beautiful object, we instead butchered a little-known novel by some chap called Tolstoy that we picked up in a thrift shop for around a dollar. Simply turn a third of the way into the book, trace the phone, and cut the pages along the outline with a craft knife and a ruler. Keep checking your iPhone against the depth of the hole and when it fits perfectly with the cover closed, you’re done. As we did not go down the Moleskine route, we’ve made the addition of a couple of rubber bands to keep the book closed, helping make it look like a well-thumbed tome that would not warrant a second glance when placed on a coffee shop table. Until it starts ringing, that is. For more technology coverage, follow Mashable Tech on Twitter or become a fan on FacebookMore iPhone resources from Mashable:

MTV Movie Awards 2010: Find Out Who’s Hot on Twitter Posted: 06 Jun 2010 03:04 PM PDT MTV is prepping for the 2010 Movie Awards by hosting an interactive “Tweet Tracker” that shows you which celebrities lead public opinion before, during and after tonight’s show. The interactive app comes with two different modes: Stripped and Cloud. The former shows moving bars with segments representing each tweet. The bars correspond to topics and celebrities like Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, Harry Potter’s Tom Felton and Sandra Bullock. The most popular topics (determined by number of tweets in the last 60 seconds) are at the top, and their bars move faster because more tweets are coming in. Click on a bar segment to read that specific tweet. Cloud mode is cooler but less practical; image blocks represent tweets and coalesce into pictures of the most popular celebrities. The biggest topic lands in the middle, and as with Stripped mode, you can click on a celebrity or topic to read individual tweets. MTV has demonstrated its social media savvy in the past, and it knows how to plan a TV event, so this isn’t a shocking change of pace or anything, but there’s a touch of brilliance in the way the tool takes advantage of tween rivalries between Harry Potter and Twilight fans, or between Team Edward and Team Jacob peeps. Everyone appreciates a good face-off. To that end, the 2010 MTV Movie Awards ceremony airs in the United States on MTV at 9:00 EST tonight. Tune in if you want to find out which teen idols will take home the proverbial gold, or you could just keep an eye the tweet tracker instead. We won’t encourage you to engage in pop culture warfare in the comments… but we won’t discourage it either. Yahoo Pulse Beats Google Buzz With Facebook and Privacy Posted: 06 Jun 2010 12:38 PM PDT A new service called Yahoo Pulse will one-up Google Buzz by offering privacy tools and integration with Facebook news feeds on the Yahoo home page, The Wall Street Journal reports. The Pulse site will behave a bit like Threadsy or the desktop app TweetDeck, aggregating real-time updates from Facebook alongside other social networks. Yahoo has been trying for months to make itself the ultimate starting page for Internet users; you can already view your Facebook and Twitter feeds using Yahoo’s “Quick View” feature, but Yahoo Pulse will provide an improved, tabbed interface and offer new kinds of integrations in Yahoo and Yahoo Mail. Notably, Yahoo Pulse will have a privacy menu that will apply to multiple services. That feature will be an important draw for some users, given that Facebook has dealt with a big privacy backlash in recent weeks. Just don’t expect it to add completely new privacy features to your Facebook account. The privacy angle is also pertinent when you consider that Google — Yahoo’s chief rival — made some major privacy errors that greatly hindered the launch of Google Buzz, a very similar service. Those faux pas and the lack of Facebook integration prevented Buzz from becoming a killer application. Pulse is Yahoo’s answer to Buzz; maybe it learned from its rival’s mistakes. The specifics of the new interface and integrations have not yet been revealed, but it’s all expected to launch within a few days. We’re curious to hear what kinds of integrations with Facebook Yahoo users would like to see, so let us know in the comments. 6 Ways to Recruit Talent for Startups Posted: 06 Jun 2010 11:45 AM PDT Small startups rarely have a recruiting professional on their team — or even someone who has enough spare time to imitate a recruiting professional. That's one reason why it can be hard for small growing companies to compete for top talent with larger companies' HR departments. One effective strategy is to recruit job seekers who already have their hearts set on working for a startup. The Internet can be a tremendous resource in finding the right people to build your team. Here are six websites that can help you make the most of the hunt: 1. Help a Startup OutA true craigslist for startups, this site displays posts for everything a startup needs, from partnerships to office space. The site grew out of Startup Digest, a mailing list of startup events. The mailing list works in two ways: Every two weeks the 10 most interesting listings are e-mailed to more than 40,000 startups on the "Help a Startup Out Digest" listserv, and every week the best technical listings are sent to the "Hackers Digest" listserv. Pros: The interface makes it easy to browse the site without waiting for people to apply to your posting. Because there's a fee to post jobs and resumes, there's not much spam. Cons: While most similar sites are free, the fee to post a job on Help a Startup Out is $99. 2. CofoundrThis simple forum is intended to help entrepreneurs build teams and solicit advice from a pool of like-minded people. Members post messages to the running feed, which is searchable by keyword. They can message each other privately or choose to follow particular people whose interests match their own. Pros: The search bar makes finding info a snap. If you're looking for a specific service or skill it can't hurt to at least check this board. Cons: People advertising services, looking for advice, seeking investment capital, and looking for cofounders are all dumping their comments into the same place, which can make it hard to browse. 3. StartuplyStartuply bills itself as a home base for growing startups with about 2,000 self-defined startup profiles on the site. Searching for team members is easy. Build a profile once, and it's integrated with every job posting you make thereafter. Each posting automatically reposts every thirty days, and startups can choose whether to receive full applications, just resumes, just a notification, or nothing when people apply to their jobs. Pros: This site targets entrepreneurial-minded people and makes it easy for them to find you. Automatic reposting and one-time profiles make it low maintenance, and its attention to aspects that most job sites overlook — like funding, number of employees, and option to telecommute — make it appropriate for start-ups. Cons: There is no way to search for profiles of job-seekers. 4. InternshipINStarted by a pair of college juniors, InternshipIN connects new businesses with aspiring professionals. Most startups can't afford university recruiting, but if you're willing to provide a legal, educational experience for a student, this site can be a great resource for discovering young talent. Pros: You can search for students whose locations and skill sets match up with your company. The site is intended for startups, so you can be sure that the students are interested in growing companies. Cons: Students have an option to communicate directly with employers by sending their cover letters to an inbox on the site. There's no way to forward this inbox to your e-mail account, so it's easy to forget to check it. 5. Go BIG NetworkThis site helps investors, startups, service providers, and advisors find each other. Startups can sign up to have their projects advertised to compatible investors or search through a 20,000-investor database. There's also a searchable service section with advice on logo design, website development and a service request board if you prefer that providers come to you. Pros: The site claims to be "the world's BIGGEST source of small business clients." Cons: In order to contact investors and service providers outside of your personal network, you'll need to pay a fee of either $49-$79 per month or $179 for a one-time use. 6. TechcofounderIf you're starting a company, chances are you either are a coder or need a coder. This site will help you out either way. Coders can create anonymous profiles and accept solicitations to work on projects or join a team. Entrepreneurs can browse coders by skill or location. Pros: There's no registration required, and the site maintains a sizable community of experienced coders who are up for side projects. Cons: Since profiles are anonymous, you'll have to make contact before you can verify that posters have the skills and experience they say they do. There also is no keyword search, so if you're looking for something specific, you might be browsing for a while.
